Have you ever tried leaving the beans in the stir crazy and letting the agitator arm cool off the beans since there is no heating element? Maybe even directing the fan onto the beans while in the stir crazy to get rid of leftover heat in them?
@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
Letting the agitator arm cool it down would be too slow and the beans would over roast. You could use a fan, but the chaff would not be completely eliminated that way.

Wow, I bet that smells amazing! We visited a coffee plant once on a trip to Africa. The smell was the best, and the fresh coffee afterward - I've had two cups today, now I'm ready for a third. I never thought to roast my own beans. Great video!

Can you still use the turbo oven lid to cook on the turbo oven after using it for coffee roasting or does it pick up coffee smells that would transfer to your food while cooking? Thanks.
@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
Dunno. Wasn't using the turbo for cooking for some years so I was glad to find a better use for it.

Is Stir pan material of teflons? If It is. It will release toxic chemicals above 260°c?

Possibly. Might explain the buzz I get from my coffee. :)

Does the stir crazy popper release heat? or is it only used to stir?
@RixCanDoit7 жыл бұрын
Yu Li Chen I disconnected the heating element.

two items to combine the system? stir pan and hot air conduct ?
@RixCanDoit5 жыл бұрын
I had an old popcorn maker and turbo oven. So I used the popcorn maker as my stirring pan, cut a thin sheet of aluminum and wrapped with foil for my ring so I could rest my old turbo oven heating lid a few inches above the popcorn maker. Cut vents in the ring to allow the chaff to blow out, and viola! A really great and inexpensive coffee roaster.

i think you should add another "arm" for the spinny things so it can keep the beans moving more efficiently, i think two arms aren't enough.
@RixCanDoit4 жыл бұрын
I've yet to have a problem with it. But adding arms wouldn't hurt. Thanks.

What other kind of turbo oven do you suggest if you can't find a Galloping Gourmet? it seems like the GG fits perfectly for the Stir Crazy
@RixCanDoit8 жыл бұрын
Matt Hosking I have no other to test. However, my GG rests on top of the metal ring I constructed, so I would think that any turbo oven that has heating element in lid would work. You just have to build the ring to accommodate.
@matthosking96818 жыл бұрын
RixCanDoit I actually just found a Magic Chef oven that has the same set up! I was I only finding ones like the Nuwave that the heating element and lid were separate. thanks for the quick response though! I'll be making a this exact roaster in about 2 days!

RixCanDoit do you have a measurement that works the best in the Stir Crazy or what you use normally? Also what exactly did you use after you took the plastic cover outta of the popper? having a hard time getting an idea of what to use
@zazen20047 жыл бұрын
Quite ingenious ! The only part i'm not real sure of is your top , heating element. What did it come from ?
@RixCanDoit7 жыл бұрын
A turbo oven. This one I bought almost 30 years ago from the Galloping Gourmet. But they are pretty common as 'turbo convection ovens'.
@zazen20047 жыл бұрын
Okay, "turbo convection oven" - now i know what to look for. Many, many thanks.

I am looking on eBay for the equipment to build this. Thanks for taking the time to explain the process so thoroughly. One question ... in the end, did you calculate how many pounds of coffee you can ideally roast at one time? Thanks!
@RixCanDoit7 жыл бұрын
No, I have never done that. Since roasted coffee has only a short lifespan for freshness, I tend to roast no more than one or two cups. However, you'll want to gauge the amount based on your own roasting machine capacity, and what the limits would be so that you are done roasting no later than say 15 minutes.

Why not use the heating element in the popcorn popper?

Save yourself the trouble and the mess, buy a Nesco Home Coffee Roaster for $150.00...
@RixCanDoit6 жыл бұрын
Sure, you can do that. I happen to have a cheap $10 popcorn maker bottom, the heating element from a turbo oven you can get cheap at a Goodwill type shop, and viola! Save a bunch of money and can make a ton more beans at once than the Nesco.

@@RixCanDoit what's funny is that ever since i started roasting my own coffee. People either like the idea, cannot understand why, or they have to scoff because their way is better for roasting and yours sucks. My father, who's stuck in the past. All i did was mention that I'm using a flour sifter + heat gun, and just need to find a little motor to turn it now. He tried to discourage my way because a flour sifter rubs the screen and a pan over a fire is cheaper. I said ok then why do you have a coffee maker? Cowboy coffee is cheaper. Not everyone has money to burn, and some people enjoy a new challenge. I grew up finding resourceful ways to do stuff and why not keep it going?
@RixCanDoit2 жыл бұрын
@@derealized797 Anyway it can be done is the right way. Two days ago I just roasted some beans from my homemade unit made from a popcorn maker, aluminum foil rim, and the top of a turbo oven. Been working great for several years now and I didn't have to dish out big bucks. 🙂

@@RixCanDoit it's ridiculous what they charge for this stuff. Like almost all of it is extremely, insanely over priced. For no reason. So the good thing about that i guess, is that most people, normal people said screw that it's not rocket science. And there's some interesting ways people come up with, you use what you have. I saw a bunch of cool stuff at the thrift store and had a few ideas. But i have limited space at home so i did it this way.

Dude you are blowing crap all over and smoke too!
@RixCanDoit6 жыл бұрын
Yeah. That's supposed to happen. The husk gets blown out through the side vents as by design, and when you roast there is going to be smoke.
