I have been roasting with a bread machine and heat gun for about 6 months and it works amazing . I got a stainless steel pan for it and a couple thermo couples it's very easy to control

Brilliant idea. I am growing my own beans in Taiwan, not commercially at all, and went looking for a small DIY roaster. I may not use your exact set up (don't have your scavenged drum for one thing), but these ideas appeal to me. Nicely done.
@darrenmanser2847 Жыл бұрын
Thanks John. What variety are you growing in Taiwan? (For some reason I don’t imagine Taiwan has high enough altitude for arabica.)
@johnshufelt Жыл бұрын
@@darrenmanser2847 Honestly, I have no idea -- total nube here -- but I *think* the beans are Arabica. The Japanese planted the first coffee on this island, which does have high mountains -- the highest peak is just shy of 4000 meters -- and coffee is easily grown in the middle hill country.

P.S. A garden center gifted me a single coffee tree a few years ago, and I have access to abandoned plants nearby. There's enough for me to have fun roasting my own beans for morning brew.

Use a leaf blower to cool the beans while you still turn them after the roast. Alternatively you could use a hair dryer set on cold.

Darren, thanks for the roasting video. I have been roasting for about 20 years and have used a popcorn popper, heat gun, and freshroast in search of the BEST cup of joe. I would like to try this, but wonder where one would get the drum to hold the coffee beans? I do not have an old Behmor, so I'd need to find something else. Any suggestions? Am in USA.
@darrenmanser28472 жыл бұрын
Hi Tim, I've considered this too. I don't know where you live but for a start I would maybe try contacting coffee machine repairers in your area or even posting on marketplace for a broken unit that has a drum. They can be purchased from behmor or if youre looking for a fun project could even be made. Best of luck 🙂
@shirleyhall38803 жыл бұрын
someone probably all ready suggested this but for cool down what would be a problem with a simple desk fan set up to blow on the beans from on top?
@darrenmanser28473 жыл бұрын
Thanks Shirley. That's great cheap idea. My only concern would be how much heat those things can take as the roaster is very hot when it's done.
@papapjb Жыл бұрын
I do like the simplicity of the build. Gives me hope to start a project. As for the cool down, I was thinking of a fan to a dryer hose, then run it in the other side and blow upwards. Keeping the drum turning. A simple switch from heat to cooling. Well, that's my two bits. Thanks!

This one is from behmor mike. behmor.com/product/roasting-drum-cylinderone-only-per-person/ I’d love to make my own but honestly this works that good and is such good quality I’d happily buy another if and when this one is toast. Good luck with the adventure 😁

@@darrenmanser2847 just checked out the link. About $35 for the basket, which I think is reasonable. The basket and the burner are crucial and I think starting with new really makes good sense. Once I get this built, I may try using a floor fan to lay over the top to pull out the heat. Simple and inexpensive really plucks my heart strings. Thanks so much n
@darrenmanser28472 жыл бұрын
@@directory3 Love to pluck you heart strings Bill.Ha. Like your floor fan idea. Try it without initially as like me you may find that with the natural rising heat extraction and subsequent cool air intake it may be enough. i have a question, have you ever compared roasting with wired drum and metal sheet drum? does the fire come into direct contact with the beans affect it in any way? thanks
@darrenmanser28474 жыл бұрын
No I haven’t mate but I’d be intrigued to know. I basically had the wire drum available so designed a system around it but it honestly works so well that I’d happily buy a wire drum new just to use it in this system. The flame never touches the drum but of course it’s adjustable.
@whoami724y4 жыл бұрын
@@darrenmanser2847 yea i figured the flames wouldn't affect it since it was high. also what speed do you recommend for the drum to spin?

Clever as it is, the title is totally misleading. I was curious how you managed to create that nice looking drum and all the other parts and assemble them in a roaster in 30 minutes. Total bull as far as the claim on how long it takes to create this contraption is concerned. Even more painful is half the length of the video is on your rumbling in a droning voice.
@darrenmanser28473 жыл бұрын
Aaah my first upset viewer. I'm all grown up now 😅 I'm sorry you didn't like it. You're right it certainly wouldn't take 30 mins to make that drum. I made the video more to inspire people to look at the resources they may have lying around (or available in their communities) and come up with their own clever and cool designs. Happy to work with you if have any ideas for your own roasting drum 🙂
