How to make a homemade Xbox 360 controller wireless receiver for PC! [HD]

Hi guys and welcome to my new Video, today i want to Show you how to build your own selfmade wireless Receiver for xbox 360 Controllers.

" Things you will need:
•Soldering Iron
•Soldering Flux
•An Xbox 360 RF Module (Ring of light board at the front of the Xbox)
•An old USB you don't care about
•5v Diode
•Driver for the receiver
•A brain
•OPTIONAL: Play and charge kit to sync controller to board anytime you want to
Before we go on, I have to warn you that you MUST sync your controller to the RF Module via Xbox before you move on. You don't have to worry about this if you have a play and charge.
The revisions of the RF Boards matter for Windows 8 but not for Windows 7. Xenon RF Boards are Rev.A, and at one point they revised it and made Rev.B. If you guys use a Rev.B board you will get better results in range and overall performance and of course W8 synch-ability. "
To sync a controller either; A) sync the controller by plugging in the RF Module in an Xbox and sync with the Xbox's sync button, or B) Plug in the controller via play and charge while the ghetto receiver is in.

To anyone still trying this; You have to use a diode or diodes that lower the 5v red wire to 3.3v. Because if you feed 5v to the board you can fry the controller. I suspect that's why so many people are complaining in the comments.

Did this shit and it worked! First I used an LED I ripped from a broken speaker. It probably wasn't the right voltage because the RF wouldn't power on although the LED was shining bright. I went for a shop and bought a 5V zener diode for €0,20, soldered that shit right up and it works like a charm. Super smash on PC here I come!

Come to think of it, this is actually great if you don't want a receiver dangling out of your PC, making it great for HTPC build. Just shove it somewhere inside. Have a dead Phat lying around. This looks like a nice project to salvage something out of that.

+Jack Maday Look, the Xbox 360 has had a major hardware bug which caused most of the batches for the first few years to die, so there's a shit ton of dead ones around, they're worth only a few $, and they're good enough for this project.

Guys you should be using two rectifier diodes in series on the usb 5V rail to drop it to ~3.3V that the board runs off. Or use a zener diode to create a regulated 3.3V source.

This is because in the xbox the rail supplied to this RF unit is 3.3V. Unsure how much protection microsoft built into the unit, but 5V could significantly decrease the life span.

@@CptJunior In device manager I went to "other devices" and selected the unknown device > update driver > browse my computer for drivers > let me pick from a list of available drivers. In the list scroll to the bottom and find "xbox 360 peripherals" and select it, finally select xbox 360 wireless receiver from the new menu and install it.

Thanks for the tutorial! Still works in 2022! Windows 10 comes with the drivers for this now, so you don't have to download them. Scroll all the way down to "Xbox 360 Peripherals" and it'll be in there. I used 3 standard 1A diodes in series to drop the voltage from 5V to ~3.3V. Worked first try! Time to play some local co-op!

I've got this thing connected with a voltage divider, voltage across the resistor is 3.7v when connected to my computer, but nothing shows up in device manager. Did yours work as soon as you plugged it in? Also on Windows 10.

@@EntropicCheese I wouldn't recommend using a resistor voltage divider to get the required 3.3 volts. The resistors will only allow a small amount of current to flow, not enough for the device to power up and function. 3 diodes is the easiest solution and it allows the device to sink as much current as it wants. Windows will make the device connected sound when your device gets the proper amount of power and is able to boot up.

@@EntropicCheese Great! My controller was already synced to the board when I removed it from the Xbox. If you need to sync your controller you will have to temporarily plug the unit back into the Xbox, boot her up and sync like normal from there. There may be another way, but this is the only that I'm aware of.

Wow, thanks! Saved me a few bucks. I already had everything. I had been given 2 rrod xboxs. I'm a tech junky so I had a few bad USB cables and a few LEDs. I was able to use a red LED to drop the voltage to around 3v. I placed it in a plastic box, painted it black, and outlined the Xbox stencil for the led. Looks great! EDIT: Replaced the LED with the same zener you used and it works like a charm now, thanks for the video! I did exactly the same as you did, except I used an LED instead of a diode. My main problem now is that when I want to install the drivers like you show in your video, it say's it can't find any compatible drivers. The device info tells me there's a Code 43 error, which seems to be some USB connection error..... Any thoughts? I would love for this to work!

worked perfectly once i sorted a good enough cable. origonally i had it pluged straight to the usb 2.0 header on my boared but due to some crappy soldering and very fine cable i changed to an external. I also didnt need a diode of any kind. my question is though, are the lights meant to work? cause mine arnt.. i may have overheated the board

i just used the usb from rear with a female end half the shield removed for the pins on bottom dont spark and from there i used speaker wire connectors to connect the diode and presto it works if u see the red and orange light u have pins touching the same connector pin but it has a really good fit and flawlessly working btw i had two extra consoles to experiment

I read that both the xbox controler and normal mouse and keyboard for pc all use the 2.4 GHz frequency. Is it also possible to overwrite the software on an wireless reciever of an old mouse/keyboard and put the driver of a Xbox 360 Wireless Gaming Receiver on it and get it to work?

+Drag0nvil i might be a little late to this but 2.4 GHz is a rather standard frequency, nothing interferes really since it's intelligence enough to keep the signals a couple of KHz apart from each other so your speakers don't turn off when you press the A button

May I ask why the 5v zener diode? they way you used it, it implies you are regulating the voltage to 5V, but the USB port is already regulated. I would like to tell you that when you are using a zener diode in reverse, you don't block the current, because one of zener diode properties, it can flow current in both directions. when placing the zener diode in reverse, it regulate the voltage to its specification, for example a 5v zener diode when it's placed with 10Vs and a resistor, you will measure 5v exactly across. the diode. sorry if I sounded rude.

Thanks! I followed the guide using an led diode and adapter from an old fat Xbox360 that i had lying around and now i can connect my 4 controllers! For those who do not have an diode you can solder the red wire without it and it will still work, at least to me it did work just fine but i left it with the led diode for the bright red light :)

I remember plugging the receiver and manually selecting the drivers by going to: properties of the device in device manager> Driver tab> Update driver> Browse my computer for drivers > Let me pick from a list>Xbox 360 Peripherals and selected the highest version available. The driver from 2009 just didn't work for me. If you can't find the latest version, tell me and i will upload it for you.

Stefan Ioan if i remember right, install the drivers for the controller wired or not it doesnt matter which there both the same driver. then go into control panel, then device manager, then right click and click properties on the unknown usb device with a yellow triangle next to it. there should be a drop down menu somewhere in the pop up window, click it and select microsoft common controller. i think thats about it if it doesnt work message me and ill re do the install and write down how... btw if you disconnect the device and turn the computer off and on again it wont recognize the device and you will have to do it again. currently trying to figure out how to stop this.

IT WORKS!. but what you also can do is remove the metal cover on rhe other side take a needel and flip up the metal pins one at a time and soder the wires to those pins the point on the board ware close to gether so my methot wil also work you can bend the pins slightly so its easyer to soder the wires i used an led no problem im dutch so pls bare with the typo's

I did it without diode and solder. I removed the metal thing on the connector, removed the plastic and taped the bottom pins. After that i made the cables round and it attaches on the pins. Then taped all togheter and it works!! So the diode and soldering are useless, but i did it this way 1) Because i didn't had another xbox, i had this spare part from other xboxes that i tried to fix, which i failed and throwed the xboxes away 2) Beacause i have the play and charge kit and it synced this way

You are just powering the controller with 5 volts dummi, that is not synchronized with the pc, you need a receiver to synchronized the controller dummi.

Nice video, Thank you. If I dont have the Play and Charge kit, and I have a broken xbox 360, how am I supposed to sync the controller with the broken 360? I find many many dead 360's on ebay, but they dont say exactly whats wrong. I dont want to spend alot, the shipping is going to cost the most. Most these broken 360's dont even come with power supply's or any cables. If I had my own broken 360, I would do this for sure but I can get a microsoft wireless controller thing for just above the cost of a broke 360... I love to do these kind of mods, and am really good with a soldering iron.. I will ask around to see if any of my friends kids have a broken 360 I guess. Thanks again for the video.. Very well done.

The play and charge kit does not make your controller pc compatible it just charges your rechargeable battery on your Xbox controller you need a controller wireless adaptor if you want to do that

It's always integrated in Windows. In W10, Go to the "drivers" setting of the device, Update Driver, Browse computer for Drivers, Let me pick from a list of drivers, and almost at the end of the list, you will see Xbox drivers. This will only work for OFFICIAL xbox wireless modules. For unofficial ones, this used to work, but it doesn't work anymore after some W10 updates. Now you have to use a hacked driver (literally 1 line change in the driver code) and it's a pretty elaborate process. On the plus side, the driver used to de-configure itself super frequently and now it works perfectly 100% of the time.

pluurep unfortunately I don't think that you can as the chip is very different. I tried when I looked up the slim rf pin out and it did not work.

When you say that I have to sync my controller to the board, do you mean that I have to sync it only once before, or sync it, leave the controller on, and then attach the board to my computer?

Just a heads up. I followed these instructions to a T and the device refused to start after installing the drivers and whatnot. Turned out I needed to install TWO diodes on my 5V line. The device recognized immediately afterwards.
