When I was in an amateur community orchestra long ago, a horn player (from the professional symphony orchestra iirc) performed the Mozart horn concerto. His horn was clear plastic tubing and a metal funnel.

The point of the hand in a French horn bell isn't to dampen the sound. French horn players put their hand in the bell because French horns are naturally sharp instruments, so putting a hand in it makes it flatter.
@ginmany
@ginmany 7 жыл бұрын
Clogged Cord and also because natural horns could only play arpeggios, and changing the hand position in the bell allowed for a different variety of notes without crooks!
@supyoist
@supyoist 6 жыл бұрын
Actually, it IS to dampen the sound. After this became common practice, horn manufacturers deliberately started making their horns tend way sharp to compensate for this technique.

@oae
@oae 8 жыл бұрын
Message from Martin: A French horn mouthpiece (or trumpet or trombone mouthpiece, depending on the diameter of the hose and the size of your lips) definitely make it sound better. But you can use nothing, or shape a piece of wax to give your lips a cushion (that's what didgeridoo players do). Or a little funnel. Just anything that gives your lips some comfort and room to vibrate.

That's what i've always tried to do with the hoses i use to clean my acquarium, problem is they're way too short for practical use (not enough overtones). Maybe, i'd have to carve some holes and try turning them into cornetts :D :D .

I was expecting you to play a hornpipe . . . In my younger days I worked at a steel fabrication company as a welder. The shop had 20' lengths of copper tubing. Being a brass player, the sight of all that tubing was too much for me. Every so often I would belt out very loud mystery noises when no one was around to watch, making sure no one caught me doing it.

This is so nice! I have a few laying around haha. I guess i have made a soprano one with the mouthpiece of my Cornet and Trumpet. The Trumpet MP gives a really sharp vibrant sound. And with the MP of my Cornet it sounds more mellow closer to a French horn. And i have also made a Bass horn too. A really big one with the MP of my Bb baritone. It’s really awesome what you can make with stuff around the house! 😃🎺

And now for the Two Ronnies to do the lyrics to the Mozart horn concerto. I made horn noises in the garden hose when I was a kid. Outside funnel is better than any restriction near the end. Try cutting the smaller ones to fit over tightly. Food, home brewing, or Ag supply funnel-big. French horn!

I'm surprised you've called those stocks when technically they are called pillories. Otherwise, the video was top. Such ingenuity with household items. Is there a way to add holes to add more notes or would that not work on?
@oae
@oae 8 жыл бұрын
Message from Martin: In England they are called stocks! Making holes in the tubing would not produce more notes. On a brass instrument you need to add valves to do that. They add or subtract lengths of tube so a different series of notes is available. Might be tricky on a hosepipe, but maybe a mechanism involving taps (English for faucets!) might work. We do sometimes use holes in baroque horns, but just for making some of the out of tune notes in the harmonic series a bit more in tune. I don't like them.
