How to make a Jingle Dress- Part 1

this video includes the list of materials that you need to make an Old-style Jingle womans pow-wow regalia, and the steps to cutting out the pieces in preparation to start sewing.. This is a pretty good tutorial. When you're cutting out your pattern pieces, put the pattern on the fabric and measure half inch around the entire thing. Cut it out with the extra (that's seam allowance) and when you line it up on your machine sew half inch in (or whichever measurement you use for seam allowance) from the end. That way the garment will fit and not be too small when you're done

I worked in alterations for close to 30 years. It might be possible be possible to add length to the shorter dress. If you can drop the hem and add the fabric to it as wide as the length you need to add to make it long enough. You could cover the seem with ribbon, tape or jingles. I really enjoyed your video. :)

This is an excellent way to incorporate culture into teaching Math...🤓 This particular video is going to force me to convert the metric system so I can say, "I need this many yards" to the fabric store people...🤔

My only concern is washing fabric first. You never know what chemicals are on it from the factory and it’ll shrink the fabric to use it so it doesn’t shrink later. I iron out the fabric before I lay it on the floor and cut it all out.

sweetie quick question.. how do you estamate the dress is.. Like a size 5 or 6 in Ladies.. in other words what size dress do you where, I am looking at Sophie demastraion and she has the inseam on the sleeve you measure your self at the cuff area she has 9 inches and 26 on the outter seam of the sleeve.. I am also a newbie at this lol.. I have to have 2 of these by next Sat..

I’m making a jingle dress for my daughter for the first time; I got one of her shirts that is well-fitting (not tight, not baggy) and folded it in half (it helps if you can iron the shirt so it lays flat. I traced around her shirt to make a pattern on regular paper, but make sure you can get the seams to lay flat to get a truer outline. I used a short sleeve shirt, then just traced the pattern without sleeves for now, but I suppose I’ll find sleeves of a long sleeve shirt that fits nicely to use.

You can measure across your shoulders on the back, like shoulder seam to shoulder seam, or use a shirt that you have too

your a great teacher I am 46 years old and just learning to make a jingle dress for my daughter. The thread you bought is what I buy to do my quilts and your right about them getting the job done. Yes, make sure your jingles are evenly spaced so it doesn't sag to one side.

I just measure myself with a measuring tape where ever the measurements on that paper are and add inches to make sure its not too small 😁

Sorry for the super late reply. I measure across the shoulders, then the bust, my stomach. Arm length too, from the shoulder seam, I always make the arms longer now too because on this dress my arms were a bit too short. Then I usually make the bottom of the dress like 60"ish around to have lots of room for walking and dancing. Connect the bottom length to the stomach measurement and that's how you'll get the flair of the dress. And also add a couple inches from your original measurements!

I used 200, it's not too heavy. The dress I made recently was 300. I felt the burn 😄 you get used to it though after a powwow or two

Folklore, traditions, & dreams are all well & good, & deserving of all our respect. Traditions are not static. They live & breathe. So anyone can make anything according to their own dream. Everyone can add to the culture. Surely you would allow traditions to be adaptable to individual needs. I don't know how much 365 cones would weigh; seems like a lot. Some people, like children, elders, & those with physical limitations like heart & lung disease might not be able to sustain wearing the additional weight. It also seems like a jingle dress can get very expensive in a hurry -- fabric, ribbon, jingles, bias tape, thread, zipper, etc. Couldn't a person make a dress in stages, adding jingles in stages as they can afford the time & money to do so? I would like to make a jingle dress ... one of these days. Wish me luck!

A word from an outsider here (I am not Native). I just started watching lots of videos on ribbon skirts & jingle dresses. It seems that lots of you ladies are pretty much self taught re sewing. And you freely admit it, saying "I'm just trying my best." Yet you produce beautiful, breathtaking garments. You come up with your own designs & patterns. You have minimal, just basic equipment. & you share. This is most important. Knowledge keepers are not meant to keep knowledge to themselves. So, yes, please share your knowledge from beginning to end. Judging from the comments, there are plenty of people hungry for guidance & instruction. If anyone is too impatient to listen to the basics, they can go on their own way. Maybe they will reinvent the wheel. My respects to all of you. Thanks for sharing!
