Supply list to build flow hood
~ Wood cuts ~
You will be using .5 inch thick MDF (you can also use plywood, hardwood) for all needed cuts. One full sheet of MDF (4ft x 8ft) will be enough wood for all your cuts if cut right with little to no waste.
Quantity
2 pieces 24in X 24in
2 pieces 13in X 24in
1 piece 12in x 24in
2 pieces 13in x 1 1/4in
2 pieces 24in x 1 1/4in
4 pieces 1in x 17.5in
~ components ~
If using a different fan and filter combo than listed below, you will have to do the math and confirm that the fan is sufficient to create the necessary flow for the specific filter used. If you need to figured out the math to confirm the filter and fan will pair correctly, please refer to my video for a simple walk through of how you figure it out.
Quantity
1 Dayton blower motor ( model 1TDT8 )
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mp...
1 BioMax hepa filter 12x 24 x 5 7/8 (you can use any brand filter that has the same measurements and a .WG under 1.0)
rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mp...
1 Electrical power cord
1 toggle off/on switch (optional)
~ Hardware ~
There are multiple types of screws at the hardware store and you can basically use any drywall or wood screw you would like or that fits your budget. I do suggest getting a more premium screw because the fan creates much force against the walls of the flow hood, but it’s not required.
Quantity
100/box 1in screws
4 1in long 1/4 wide bolts w/ matching nuts
4 1/4in washers
1 bottle/tube clear silicone
1 roll electrical tape (3mm is the best)
2 electrical connector/caps
~ Tools needed ~
- Screwdriver or drill bit attachment that matches your screws
- 1/4 drill bit
- Tape measure or ruler that can measure a minimum of 24 inches
- Saw ( either circle saw or jig )
- Right angle
- Corner clamp (optional but will make easier if it’s a solo project )
- Wood clamp (optional)
~ Information on a pre-filter ~
Many people opt to have a pre-filter on their flow hood. A pre-filter is a filter that covers your blower fan and it helps keep dust and debris from entering the fan. It is easily and cheaply constructed by using a cheap air purifier filter and box around the blower fan. This can prolong the life of your expensive filter and blower fan. It is optional and it does not make your flow hood more efficient. If you would like to build one, it will cost under $15-$20. If you do choose to use a pre-filter, it also changes the .WG which might also make you need a more powerful blower fan. To figure out if the fan will be sufficient with a pre-filter, please refer to my video of a more detailed explanation on how to do so.

Thank you willy this is just what i needed. Been putting off my next batch bc i couldnt decide what inoculation tek to use. Im only like 2 minutes into the vid so not sure if he mentions it, but something everyone should know is that there is a very big difference between SABs and glove boxes. Glove boxes are completely sealed and not very effective because moving the gloves creates air vortices. SABs are okay bc well, the air is still. But SABs are still partially open to the outside environment, so theres still chance of nasties getting in

Love your teaching talent. I teach beekeeping and picked up on your attention to detail for beginners. Well done. The only criticism I would have is in the design. Blow by the actual filter is a factor on contamination. You might not feel it but it’s there. A simple fix is neoprene weather stripping lining the inside of the box against the filter. Again-great job. Thanks

Ya know what.. I know it is over a year ago that you said that and all but.. let me be the one to usher you back down memory lane in making you remember that you said that, whenever I say that.. that's a really really good idea! Lol 😆 I am making the transition from still air box to laminar flow hood, and I am building it from scratch pretty much. I know it is gonna need to be airtight and all. And whenever you said that.. I thought to myself.. "Well.. really I COULD just calk the filter into place". Thennn I thought to myself.. "Jeff.. you're an idiot! If you DO do that (haha! Dodo! :P ) you are gonna ruin your expensive ass HEPA filters!". So.. I just wanted to say.. thank you! I will take you up on your idea :)

Willy, thanks for this awesome video!! A couple tricks to make your life easier when make these: When you drill holes to cut out the hole for the fan flange, you can drill them inside the area to cut out and saw from there to your marked line. That way you don't have to worry about lining up the holes exactly with the corners. Also, a super easy way to mark out the area to cut for the flange, you can mark your 1/2 inch on either side of each corner and then draw lines between the marks and voila the hole to cut is marked out. Peace and thanks for everything!!

Ignore the efficiency percentage and instead look at the micron size. You want to get 0.3 microns or lower. Also, the thicker, cardboard looking corrugated material filters that are usually 6-12" thick are the ones you want. Not all HEPA filters are created equal, and one of the 1" thick ones you can get at Home Depot for $20 is a filter you do NOT want to use as your main filter. If you want to use it as your pre-filter then I think that's a reasonable choice, but ideally you want to be buying the clean-room style HEPA filters that come in a thin wooden or sheet metal shell that you need to separately purchase a frame or cabinet for or ideally construct one for yourself. The corrugated cardboard look of them can make them look deceptively cheap, but those are actually the ones you want. 6-12" thick, 0.3 microns or SMALLER, and you can also look for ratings such as them being effective against bacteria and mold, especially because those are going to be the two biggest sources of contamination that you'll be up against. They can get expensive, with the cheapest 24"×48" filters of that type being over $500 a piece, but you can find a 24"×24" for no more than $250. Don't be tempted to cheap out on your HEPA filter. If you can't afford a nice one, then wait and save up more, because if you go cheap and purchase a less effective HEPA filter then you're going to be FAR more likely to experience contamination issues, especially if you're new to this. This is science at the end of the day, and while you don't need all of the fancy and expensive equipment, it DOES make a noticeable difference when you invest more money where it counts. Buy a cheap filter with a 10 micron pattern spacing, and don't be surprised that your laminar flow hood doesn't seem to be working because you purchased a filter that contaminants can pass right through. Conversely, however, don't over spend. And most importantly don't let yourself get discouraged. Especially if you've never done anything like this before where you're performing scientific procedures, there can be a steep learning curve and you may be making a dumb little mistake that you don't even realize you're making because life on the scale of fractions of microns isn't quite as intuitive as life on our scale. Do NOT give up. Instead, purchase some literature on mycology and fungi cultivation and start reading. Knowledge is your most important tool when it comes to this, and having even a basic level of understanding of fungal biology will have you WAY out in front of the pack with an advantage over those who choose not to study the academic literature. Some basic things like knowing proper aseptic technique and following a substrate recipe for the particular type of species or cultivar you're growing can be the difference between pulling pounds from mono-tubs or getting frustrated and quitting on it because this is your 5th spawn jar to be taken over by mold. Read your literature, CLEAN with a high attention to detail between attempts, and keep trying. Eventually you'll get it. The first and most important book that you'll need to purchase is "Growing Gourmet and Medicinal Mushrooms" by Paul Stamets. This book contains one of the most detailed write ups on how to cultivate mushrooms/fungi. It covers everything from the very step 1 basics, all the way to more intermediate and advanced practices such as spore/cell isolation, cell tissue cultures, and selectively breeding your own novel heirloom cultivars. Additionally, it is a good resource to reference when you wish to know things such as which types of substrate are best for which specific species and cultivars you're working with, things like tricks in learning how to condition pickier cultivars to learn how to grow on substrates they normally would not because either its cheaper for you, more accessible, or opens the door to some form of genetic modification you're aiming at via selective breeding. This book will teach you how to inoculate a pre-sanitized spawn bag with a spore syringe all the way to how to train morels to grow on brown rice through several generations of selective breeding cell tissue culturing. If you're serious about making mycology and growing fungi your new hobby, then that book by Stamets is your new Bible and that belong stays on your nightstand to be read every single night, several times over until you can explain to someone else about how to grow mushrooms. Growing mushrooms is not HARD, but it does require making a concerted effort to educate yourself not only on the steps of growing mushrooms, but on mycology generally, and understand that you're beginning a foray in to a branch of science that will require your time and energy to get beyond that initial learning curve. And then realize that once you're past that, you'll immediately be faced by the next learning curve, and this will happen without end the more you learn. There are Ph.D level scientists who have been studying mycology for 4 decades and they still have more yet to learn than they can actually get to in one life time. Fungi are incredibly complex, and they happen to be one area of science that we generally know less about than your average branch of study. That's part of what makes it so cool and fun though. We really are just beginning to scratch the itch that is mycology and boy do we have a ways to go, but we all get to join in the curiosity at the ground level and ride that sucker on up with a lot of really cool scientists. Most of all, just have fun 😋

There's a video of a guy using a regular home air purifier with hepa filter, he leaves his petri's open for 5 minutes and 1 has no contam 1 has 1 contam and the others have 2 each because his setup wasn't proper and they weren't getting enough clean air. Done in a SAB of some type would probably eliminate all contamination. With a 80 dollar air purifier.

5:12 - Laminar flow is a steady stream of air. There's what's called turbulent flow, laminar flow and transitional flow. So turbulent flow doesn't come out in a straight line; what actually happens is it's all over the place, crossing over each other. And then there's what's called transitional flow. Transitional flow is a mixture between turbulent and laminar. And then you have laminar flow which is what we're trying to achieve which is a steady stream of air coming out in direct lines; it's not confused, it's not bouncing up and down or off walls or off each other; it's a steady stream of air and that's exactly what we want. 6:08 - Flow hood (small size/without containment walls/by definition blows from 'above', like a hood) Flow box (medium size/without containment walls - like in this video) Flow cabinet (luxury size/with containment walls- seen in professional laboratories) 9:38 - CFM = cubic feet per minute = cubic feet X 100 We multiply by 100 because the minimum required is 100 feet per minute to achieve laminar flow. (1 foot = 12 inches)

You need smaller wire nuts. Reds are for much larger wires. You probably want orange or yellow for this application. Pay attention to the specs on the wire nut package. Properly stripped and twisted, there should be no bare wire outside the wire nut. You do NOT need electrical tape behind a wire nut. If you see bare wire, trim your splice a little shorter and do it right :) Also, since you don't understand grounding equipment, you should say so. Grounding is necessary. It saves lives. You're putting people who don't know any better at risk here, man.

@Specoli Well you certainly are confident but you are incorrect. The motor housing is only grounded if you connect the ground wire. (like duh?) But I have good tools and can make super accurate cuts with my table saw and have a decent set of clamps so if I didnt have that then I would use screws to hold things until I could fill gaps with silicone. But like I said, his is an easy way to get the job done.

Harbor freight sandblasting cabinet. It's pre-wired for lighting (get a UV bulb), it's got intake & exhaust ports. Mine fit a 120mm vacuum fan for positive pressure an it fits small hepa filters which is cheap. With their 20% off coupons it's under $300 easy. Has the viewing window, seals, has gloves mounted to the box. Jus don't put sand in it.

Grounding is actually pretty important. And when grounding, you don't want to "ground" the unit to itself, because that's not actually a ground. The ground wire from the motor that's connected to the housing, is done so with the expectation of you continuing that ground. The purpose of the ground is to protect your equipment, and potentially protect you and your home. The reason it's called a "ground" is because a properly grounded appliance connects to the grounding in your electrical system which ultimately ends up into the actual ground (aka Earth). In the event that you get a power surge, the excess electricity from that surge will travel through the ground wire all the way to the outside and into the ground/Earth. If the equipment is not grounded and you have a power surge, there is the risk that it will destroy your motor. And while it might not, it could also cause some equipment to blow up and potentially start a fire.

Glad you mentioned this, it is actually very important in this application because the motor is mounted to a wooden box (insulator) Generally speaking it would be mounted to a metallic cabinet. On this box the blower can generate a lot of electrostatic charge; if not grounded you can get a nasty zap if you touched the motor. Also adding a fuse/switch on the live wire would make this more safe. As it stands, it will get the job done though.

And In situations where an equipment ground is not used there is the possibility that the housing could become energized. With no proper path to ground there is a possibility of your circuit breaker not preforming it’s task and breaking the circuit. Last thing you want is for you to become the least resistant path to ground/earth. Like water electricity takes the path of least resistance.

Isn’t there a ground in the three prong plug he uses? The wiring does look a little hodgepodge he should use some sort of conduit IMO

Hey man, good video for the most part. I must correct you on one major piece of misinformation though. When you wire in that motor you absolutely need to ground it. Yes, it will work with out it but it will not be electrically safe. The factory ground to the frame is not actually grounding the motor until you connect the ground from your plug.

@danfraz1674
@danfraz1674 4 жыл бұрын
@@SMOKETHEPROFESSOR you will want to look at the wiring diagram that should come with the fan, it will tell you what wire is what and where they should go. but in this case its the green wire in your power cord. that should as he said get hooked under one of the screws on the body of the motor. being somewhat ocd i would put it under the existing ground that the motor has already hooked in. in this instance as he stated its not super important but if anyone watching this thinks they can take this advice to other projects they might have issues that can be dangerous. its just better to ground everything that can be grounded. so he does tell you how to do so but he also gives the viewer room to make that decision which is what we can a liability issue in the business.

Love it, basic woodworking as well. :) Good job! Everyone should know how to make a box. Also, just a heads up. Not all plywood that is sold as half inch is really half inch. Some are like 15/32 so your math might end up being off a bit. You seem to be doing outside butt joints so it wouldn't matter.

silicon/caulking tip: cut the tip of the tube at a 45 degree angle and give yourself no more than an 1/8th in hole. the angle helps with clean application and the hole size keeps things clean and youll use way less material

BTW Willy... another way to measure the cutline of the blower motor hole. Measure from the flange to where to cut out for the hole on the motor itself. So I'm guessing around 1/4 in or whatever it is. Measure that from the outline drawing of the flange edges that was drawn on the box...draw straight lines with a straight edge. 👍☮️

If you're a fan of upcycling and need a fan you can also use air mattress inflator pumps They are prewired and can run for awhile but you shouldn't let them run all day. You can make a small flow hood with one. Plus they're free if you find a old air mattress.

I am wondering if a 12 x 24 HVAC return plenum wood work in replace of the wood seeing how it is a complete sealed box then I then a person would only have to cut in for the band to fit is this correct or am I missing something does The Returned items are made and designed to hold an air filter long as I use the right filter the right fan will the Box substitute for the carpenter work that's my question I am thankful for the success story in the before my question here folks that is awesome!

Hey I saw your video on your subtrate in PR. Ive been playing with mushrooms since I discovered High Times in the 80s and now Ive decided to get serious and add mushrooms to our farm in Fajardo, PR. I had no idea someone was making quality substrate here in the island. Grandpa grew platanos, beans, sugarcane and we always saw oyster mushrooms, teametes, ganoderma...wild but had no clue. What makes our island substrate one of a kind like you say? Thank you for adding one more reason to be proud of our Borikén.

Great vid. Just followed. Can't you just use a fan? Now that you've deconstructed this, you could use two small higher-power fans to do the same or does the blower motor have something special? If it does, I cannot see it. Whatcha think?

You can also use a sticky spray that increases the efficacy of the air filter, FYI, the older the filter or the more "stopped up" it is, the more patriciates it blocks and retains them in the filter, therefore making the holes smaller and less get's thru.
