WOW Joe, that's beautiful & I know your wife & your father in law, when you get his made, will love it, which I'm sure as you was making it she was watching every move. Please tell me on way or another if she knew about it or did she not know? If not & it was a surprise gift, I know she loved it. You did a wonderful job on it. Plus it means so much more when someone, you, takes the time to make something special for someone you love & care about. I know I do. Plus you put so many special touches to it. You just amaze me everytime you do a video. You my friend have a special gift that a lot of people would love to have. Don't say they to can do it, bc theres a lot of people who really can't do some of the things, can't think for themselves, you do. I know if I put all my energy into something, I can do it but I don't have the patience for sure, nor do I have the money for tools to accomplish the things I need to do it with. Your got a small fortune in those tools, yes I know it took a lot of time to get those tools, just like my husband took 30 Plus years to get his automobile tools built up. It's like your weight. You didn't just wake up fat, it took years to get there.... lol... Oh you know me I had to throw a joke in here some where & that was a good one I have to say. But it's true, think about it for a minute. It took years/or sponsors to get them tools & it's hard work to acomplish what you've done for years & I'm not going to mention how many years it takes to learn all these skills you use & how many times you've failed to get it just right & you lean as you go. If a person quits learning, then there going to fail @ their craft everytime. Bc theres always new ideas 💡 that come out that are either an easier way or a new tool comes out to make what your doing way more easier. Always learning & keeping an open mind is advancing your skills. Well that went haywire quickly just to say how amazing you are @ the things & projects to do. OMG! lol....... I had seen the pics of the net on IG. When the video notification came up, I was thinking I probably wouldnt be interested in watching, although I thought the net was really beautiful. (No offense meant at all!) However, I did watch and it was cool learning the history of the wood you used. I would have been so nervous that I would screw it up (had it been me making it) once you got the point where you routed the groove, and started drilling the holes. Great job, and Im glad I watched!

Wow that's truly a work of art. The mixed woods really give it that extra wow factor. Love all collection of clamps. The router jig was brilliant. Ofcourse that's no surprise from you. LOL I myself love making templates. So much fun when you see the end result. I grew up with both my parents selling fine American crafts. They always worked in wood on the side. They mainly were jewelry designers. When they closed there business after 50 year they both continued to work in wood. Since it was so much cheaper then buying gold and silver. When they were first starting out they had permission to pick out scraps from the Martin Guitary factory dumpster. My dad still has a nice selection of super thin Brazilian Rosewood. (He and 2 other wood workers also wrote a coffee table book of sculpture Emil Milan) Nothing feels or smells like wood that's for sure! What a incredible gift.. Can't wait to see it in use. Thank you! And that’s an incredible history of your parents and their making of jewelry…. That requires real high quality care and craftsmanship! I used to work with a guy who did engraving on the side. He’s engrave and do silver/gold inlays to all sorts of things. Custom knives, fancy over/under shotguns, etc,. Extremely high level stuff… as in the knives were $5k-15k range😳 And that ability to get the high end guitar scraps…. What a deal! And the coffee table book too!? Super cool!

Oh yeah….no big cats in our trout streams. But we’ve got them in our big reservoirs like lake Powell, Roosevelt, etc,. But in those cases I’d probably just grab an aluminum premade net😉

@@homesteadonomics Since we bank fish the local river we have special nets made. A local makes 4-5 of these a year. 8' 1" dia 1/4th inch wall handle, hoop of the same material, and extra heavy duty nets he sources from somewhere(ocean fishing net maybe?). He only makes them for the locals he knows. I have broken one of his on a fish that went 65 pounds. Store bought nets I used to go thru 3-4 a year... and have to get down in the mud to use it.

Great project, Joe! You know I'm in the region where your wife's family wood came from. I work with a fair amount of both types of Oak AND Chestnut. I wonder if her wood is Chestnut based on the worm holes, finished color and its appearance in the tablesaw scene--looks like the Chestnut bar top I just built. Red Oak, White Oak and Chestnut have their own unique, strong smells, so that's a way to confirm it if you want to know for sure. All the best, Andrew

I agree, ever since I first saw chestnut in my wood technology class I've been impressed by it's beauty. My brother-in-laws grandmother's house is full of chestnut lumber. I was amazed when I saw it, so much so that his mother bought me a picture frame made from chestnut. I wish had a few Mbf of it stored in a shed for woodworking projects.

But my wife has enjoyed fishing more and more over the years and this past camping trip she lost a couple big guys right when she tried to land them on the bank…. So that’s kinda where the net will see the biggest benefit

Awesome job. How deep did you go with the V-bit for the channel? Nice work around without the specialized slot bit. What I love about all of the videos is you can pick up a tip from almost everyone. You used the aluminum for the form. I saw someone us a piece of ash (not glued to the net) for the same purpose to help eliminate cracking and keep the outer layer from getting marred.

Thank you. As for the depth…🤔 You know what, I’m not 100% sure…. Kind of eye balled it to where that paracord would be recessed enough to be protected from abrasions. But if I did it again I think I’d go just a hair deeper. Like maybe just barley the width of the outter lamination. But not so deep so as to show the color of the middle lamination.

It’s silicone rubber molded. Supposed to be good for catch and release as it is supposed to be easier on their skin. But I mostly got it based on the recommendation of my friend Scott.

We fish mostly small high mountain streams. So no worries there….but we do have some big lakes and in that case I’d likely just use a premade aluminum net😉
