I'm not a big user of pens (and have so far resisted buying a lathe because ... I already have too many hobbies) but this looks like a great project for an afternoon when I want to procrastinate on something else. :)

Looks awesome! And no clip makes it look cleaner :)

that came out great. If you don't use the clip, you don't need the clip. I wouldn't mind making one or two of these as gifts.

James, awesome little project! Try making it with staghorn sumac, the heartwood is a lovely greenish gold, and the branches have a soft central pith that is very easy to remove. Best part is, most people will let you have it for free. An added bonus... Sumac glows under a black light. (I make tobacco pipes and spoons out of "y junctions".)

that is a lot of fun to play with.

did you know you can put blades with a 2mm shaft into these sort of pencils? usually used for compasses, but in this case it would make the pencil mightier than the pen AND the sword! very nice job you did on these

A clipless pencil? Wow. That's wild. Living life on the edge, or "live edge" if you prefer. Nice work. Do you get different colours of pencil for these types of things? Being able to throw in some white for darker woods would be a great thing.

That's a cool idea. I've never thought about looking for colored lid I'll have to do that. I'm sure someone out there makes 2mm colored lids for them.

Well that’s a simple question. The lead holder is like the C-Bees, it paves they way for the tools that take all the credit.

I think ots fine without the clip. First pen I tried to make was a click pen that had a nifty little wrench for a clip and I did that pen without a lathe everything went together perfectly until I tried to put the clip on. Ruined the pen. So if it works then it works

Leave the clip off, looks nicer.

What if one doesn’t have one of those vacuum things

It is not necessary to make it. It just makes it a little bit easier.

You might be able to get away with "thin" CA glue. I know a lot of pen turners use it as finish, and CA cures into acrylic just like Cactus Juice does.

what hardness of lead do you like to use?
@WoodByWrightHowTo4 жыл бұрын
I like HB for most things. hard enough to hold together but soft enough to leave a good visible line on rough lumber.

The clips get in my way. I rip the clips off the pens and mech. pencils in my shop.

Perhaps the forgetting of the clip was the hidden brain speaking out loud. Telling you the best way to do the job.
