Great Instructional Video... I was curious about the construction techniques as I do Leathercraft to make things for myself and others in my group of Viking Age Re-enactors... My only advice would be that as you have punched holes in the leather, instead or using an Awl or the Stitching Chisels you showed at the start, that this bag would not be suitable for Re-enactment... but I liked the blend of the 2 pre-dyed leathers you used... I did wonder why you bevelled both sides and then finished the edges, but you went down the Skin to Flesh side in joining the Gusset and the Front and Back pieces... Flesh to Flesh edges, like you used on the back - would mean only bevelling the outside edge, and then finishing the Burnishing of those edges to the end once they have been stitched together, as bevelling the inside edges will mean the burnishing would not make the 2 pieces blend together... also gluing the seams together before stitching will give a stronger and longer lasting join, just don't forget to rough up the surface of the skin side that is being glued... ;o)

Really nice work. Just found your site. Although its naturally darker leather, it is veg-tan, so I suppose you could carve-tool it if you wanted, right?

Would you treat the leather with any type of finish? To give it some protection and/or a nice shine?
@CreativeAwl

That leather was pre dyed in tannery so.any finish wasnt needed

What kind of leather do you use please And did you glue two layers of leather to come out with this “the back and the front are the same color”?!

Hello, its vegetable tanned leather, pre-dyed in tannery.

Creative Awl has given one solution... the other is to Dip Dye plain Veg Tanned Leather, take a plastic tray and fill with Dye deep enough to cover the leather as it passes through the tray, then pass the leather through it ensuring it gets submerged, hold it above the tray to allow excess dye to drip off, and peg it up on a line to dry... best done with oversize pieces so the peg mark doesn't appear on the finished piece... you can put the unused dye back in the bottle afterwards... this does use more dye than just using a dauber or pad to dye one surface, but the overall result is better if you are going to see the inside surface once the project has finished... Large bottles of dye are more cost effective in the long run too, rather than buying several small bottles to do a large job...

nice work. Caution though. You have a habit of picking up your work piece when you stitch and I miss some of the key stitches like at the beginning or end of a stitch line.

You didn’t say that there would be a need for a beveler tool in the beginning. Also, the backside panel has an exposed edge that doesn’t appear to be burnished. Was that intentional?
@CreativeAwl
@CreativeAwl 5 жыл бұрын
Yeah i didnt mention about edge beveler at the begining. Don't remember now it was due by mistake or or i just tought its a msut have tool in every leatherwork, sorry :) The backside panel edge has been beveled and burnished as well.

Watch Corter leather and cloth videos. Your videos are poorly shot, and the music is annoying. Your lighting sucks and your knife is dull! Beautiful bag, thanks for the pattern.
