With a buckle closure on front and rounded flap edges it would look mighty fine.

If you can believe it, I still haven’t finished the front because I’m so wishy-washy about how I want to do it. Although I like your idea, kind of a scalloped front with a buckle closure, that could look sharp.

@@PrimalEdge I was thinking of rounded edges on bottom left and right side but whatever you choose just do it. You can always make more and they’ll only get better.

I realize i am 3 years late to the party but as a new leather worker myself I appreciate this video. It is good to see the learning process, I am curious what the demensions of the haversack are and if you ever finished it? If so, how did it turn out?

I am going to make one of those using a canvas bag with a little leather sewn on. I'm going to try to waxing it first then attaching some leather.

This would make a greate possibles/black powder shooting bag once you get both the inside and loop outside pockets on and in. I would love to see it when it is finished.

I designed my own haversack and it’s served me well. Er, well, it showed me what I wish I’d done. 😜 Mine is partially laced and partially stitched. It’s a bit wider than yours (I think) but similar. My next one will be a bit bigger, with side pockets (folding knife on one side, fire striker and diamond stone on other). I’m going to cruise you’re videos for the follow up. Cover me! I’m going in!!

Great video!!! Love the way you described the leather and patina it will gain. “Scratches” (in my mind) on the final product bring about a story to it. Thank you for sharing!

A tip for your issue with the slipping stitches. It's something I came up with on my own, but it's very handy.... About every 10 or so stitches, do a half knot before you put the second needle through (I do my needles one at a time. It's faster than trying to finagle both needles through the hole, it doesn't wallow out the holes, and for me it's just plain faster). Doing it before you pull the second needle through will pull the half knot into the hole, hiding the crossover. It'll create enough tension in there to keep the thread from backing out as you're working with it. Give it a try and let me know how it goes.
@blindwit
@blindwit 3 жыл бұрын
Also worth mentioning: Try harness needles. Must nicer, less breakage, etc. I've also used a single stitch to hold pieces together where a clamp wouldn't work well (just a quick little unfinished stitched to hold the lines).
@PrimalEdge

That sounds like a great tip!!! I’ll try it, for sure!

To be fair, measure twice cut once is usually meant for wood so you don't make it too short. Your problem was actually the opposite which is what I do. Ere in the side of caution when it can ruin a project by being too small

The Mark VII bag can still be considered a haversack, as the term has come to simply mean a side bag on a single strap worn over the shoulder. Yes, Indiana Jones had a gas mask bag. But what did he use it for? He used it as a haversack.
