I know it was awhile ago, but the calm and cheerful way you went through the process finally gave me the courage I needed to finish a mask project for my little brother :) I was really nervous about baking it, since I'd heard that was when it could all go wrong--- but I just used low heat and 5 minute intervals, and now it's done!! And it looks great!!! Thank you again!

I used your ideas and made 2 deer family mask sets! The kids LOVED them, so did adults and many pictures were took using them:) I did add a dowel on one side (with a tab so it did not take away from the overall mask, which I used a leather sewing awl to sew it around the dowel) so they could hold it up to the face rather than literally put it on...this was better due to public use of items. I made 3 for White tail deer and 3 for Mule deer, both with mom, dad and kid!:) It was very popular.Thank you!!! I can't seem to put a photo here for you, but if you go to the Helen Schuler Nature Centre facebook page you will see a little girl wearing a mask in costume for us:) She looks very cute!

+M.R. Yan Hi there! Technically it is still a bad idea to submerge leather items because water can make leather malform. In this case, I use that property of leather to help forge it into shape since the water and heat make it malleable. It's a really fun method I'm happy to have discovered. So much easier than making masks from clay like I used to!

This video has been very informative, but say, that if I wanna give it a sort of steampunk feel and add in holes were I could put prongs later[they would resembles bolts or nuts], on, would it be better to put in the holes before or after baking ,and I understand the that prongs should probably be put in later on
@angelicartisan8 жыл бұрын
Hi there! You can technically punch holes before and after baking. For example, I punch holes for ties for the mask after baking. The trick is that I can only do that because my hole punch can fit on the side of the mask after it's been molded. If you're punching holes after baking, make sure you can reach the spot you want to punch with your rotary punch, as it's a lot more difficult to use drive style punches on leather that's not laid flat. Another option I've done before is to burn holes in with a solid point wood burner. This can be tricky, however, since you can end up scalding an area if you aren't careful, but it does allow you to control the size of the hole. A dremel tool is another thing I've done before to punch holes in small areas like for earrings. Hope that helps and good luck!

Amazing video. Thank you so much for posting it. I had a question. I made a mask and would like to attach some feathers. What is the best way to glue/attach things to the back of the mask? I also don't want for the back of the mask to look awful. Any ideas?
@angelicartisan8 жыл бұрын
I usually leave the backside of the mask undyed since dye can rub off on the skin. To make it smooth if it's not already smooth, I take a bit of damp fine grit sandpaper and smooth the back a little. As for attaching feathers or other materials, I usually prefer Goop. For leather to leather attachment, leather cement is also very good.

Hi there. This has been the best video so far that I've come across. I'm giving leather mask making a first try for Halloween (since I can't seem to get a response from the Etsy store that had the mask I wanted for sale) and wanted to ask... in your video you mention using a pen cap in place of a "real" stamping tool. Could you explain that a little more? I'm looking for any tips to help save some money since I'm hoping to keep costs down in case I totally mess it up... LOL. Really appreciate any advice you can offer. Thanks very much!
@angelicartisan8 жыл бұрын
Hi Michelle! The pen cap would basically be you pressing the outside part of the cap down into the damp leather to push it in and create the texture. I highly recommend just grabbing a modeling spoon though. It's what I used before I bought bevel stamps and they're fairly affordable. I have a list of the tools you can see here, if it might help you out - blog.angelicartisan.com/p/tools-materials.html

Hi!! Congratulations for your tutorial!!! So gorgeous your creation! A M A Z I N G! Can I ask you a question? How many time does the mask bake in the oven? what temperature? Sorry for my not perfect english! I'm Italian! Thank youuu!!! ^_^
@angelicartisan9 жыл бұрын
The mask is baked at the lowest setting (it is called Warm on most ovens, or you can use the lowest temperature available). I bake a mask at 5 minute intervals usually for a total of 20 minutes. The time may vary per mask depending on the thickness of the leather and how quickly the mask dries, as you don't want it to get brittle.

I bought a leather mask online that doesn't quite fit perfectly. Any suggestions, or is it even possible to soften it a little to adjust the fit? Great video.
@angelicartisan9 жыл бұрын
+jjhendo If the back wasn't sealed, you may be able to dampen the mask and reshape it, but do so at your own risk! Most of the time, the more you wear a mask, the more it will conform to your face as well (which is why I love the material). You may also want to ask the creator/seller of the mask how to do this, as they may use a unique process different than my own and can give you more specific instructions on how to change the shape or perhaps even offer to alter it for you. Good luck!

NICE MASK and great work!! Would you have an idea how to do a deer mask like this and a way to do the antlers?? I NEED THAT for a set on Deer:) Any tips would be wonderful!! A leather cutting tip...score the cut first by lightly cutting the fist impression rather than trying to cut through so hard. For stropping, use the leather scrap you have there...polishes the blade nicer and faster:) That is what they used for shaving blades:) Makes them sharper! How about a cookie sheet tray with the baking paper, easier to take in and out of oven?? Just wondering:) Cheers!
@angelicartisan6 жыл бұрын
Hi Vicki! I've never tried to make antlers, but if I did, I'd take a thinner piece of leather (around 3 oz maybe) or skive thicker leather thinner by stripping off from the back and cut it into the general shape of the antlers, then roll and pinch the leather so it has a more cylindrical shape. It may not look perfect from the back where you can see the seam/opening, but it'd be serviceable from the front. You could even do these pieces separately and attach them to a mask made of thicker leather with leather cement. I'd also probably dip or brush the antlers in a mixture of leather cement and water after baking so as to help make them more solid so they keep their structure.
@angelicartisan6 жыл бұрын
And also check out how other people have made antlers on Etsy too. Might give you ideas! www.etsy.com/search?q=leather%20mask%20deer
@vickikgibson94706 жыл бұрын
I am thinking I may cut them wider, so I can roll the leather around a carved piece of pink insulation board...getting the shape...then, when dry, stitch the backing around thus holding the antlers into shape...they don't have to be big, just a two pointer for mule deer and one for white tail deer. I might stuff them with light pillow stuffing to help them keep a shape. Or just keep using the carved foam antler for the inside and stitch sections around it at back. Since the antlers will join on the head crown part, it should be stiff enough...either that, or use wire inside to help hold the shape, then stitch up with a batting inside....well, thinking out loud here:) I do like adding the glue to the back to make them stiffer there..:) Great idea! IOH.. for that back...I am thinking of adding felt or some smooth vinyl, so they are non allergic for those of us allergic to leather...some kids are...and with the thin vinyl material one can also clean the inside of the mask too? :) Thank you!..! I am sure if one can do dragon horns, one can do antlers:) I guess I will soon find out...and will let you know:)

I literally have just begun my journey in leathermaking and this is so amazing. However.... I am planning on making a full leather armour set. So, I have to ask. can your same methods be used for armor? What can I use to mold the leather if I have a piece that is too big for the oven? How do I attach pieces with metal bits so that it is layered like armour? I loved your tutorial! It provided very useful tips. great job!
@angelicartisan7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, Taylor! I haven't worked with more than small bracers before, but to harden them, I baked them longer than I usually do my masks. The longer you bake them, the harder they get, but the trick is to not burn it! I've also dipped leather in a mixture of mod podge and water before to harden certain delicate tips. I've never worked with armor before, but I hear that some leatherworkers boil their armor in wax to harden them. I'm not familiar with armor making, so my suggestion is to check out your local Tandy Leather outlet or your local SCA branch, if you have either. There should be folks there who might know how to help you out! Good luck and may you make beautiful things on your journey with leathercrafting! I'd love to see if you ever want to come back and share something you made with me.

If you cut the eye holes with less pressure, more precision, and multiple passes...it's much, much easier.

I've found that when I do multple passes, it would result in ragged edges which would require smoothing, so I always try to get them in one go. But honestly, go with whatever method gets the shapes cut out best for your tastes! I've heard of others outlining with the chisel knife first and then cutting which I'll have to try next time.

fantasticphotos1 Hi there! First off, I actually have a free pattern of the Bioshock rabbit available over at www.gumroad.com/angelicartisan . I personally use 8 oz leather, a swivel knife, bevel stamps (large and small), and a couple of different shader stamps for the cracked areas. Doesn't really take anything special. wisspersf I had one other question - when ordering hide, if you don't want to jump right into ordering a whole side, is there a particular part that you order? I'm going to be making two of the same mask, and they are taller than they are wide, so I think I will be able to cut them out end to end because they interlock somewhat on the top in order to save room.. but this being my first one I'm not sure how much hide I really need to account for waste, etc. In your experience, if you order a double shoulder, would that be sufficient for two medium sized masks? (the total size is 9-10 sq. ft.)
@angelicartisan10 жыл бұрын
wisspersf double shoulders have usually suited my needs and I make from small to medium masks. You might even be able to fit them on a single shoulder, if you get one that's clean and wide enough (if you're able to go into a Tandy leather store and actually pick your own, which I recommend).
@wisspersf10 жыл бұрын
Angelic Artisan - The Artisan Crafts of Angela R. Sasser Thanks.. unfortunately I live in Northern VA and I don't think there is a Tandy store nearby. There's one in Richmond but that's about 2 hours away, so I'm stuck ordering online it seems.

You can buy a single 8.5x11 inch sheet of tooling leather from Hobby Lobby for a small mask if you don't want to commit to buying an entire shoulder or a hide from Tandy Leather. I usually buy shoulders when they go on sale at Tandy.

Do you add any waterproofing to the inside like aussie leather conditioner for sweat? does it weaken the leather if you don't?
@angelicartisan9 жыл бұрын
I do not add anything to the back of the masks since I do not want to trigger anyone's allergies. I haven't had a problem yet leaving the back of the masks untreated, but I'd be curious how they survive years down the line. So far, my oldest masks are around 5 years old and they're still holding up well.
@Tuffsmoygles9 жыл бұрын
Interesting. I've only recently gotten into leatherworking. Do the masks shrink after being baked or can you make them to fit the size you need?
@angelicartisan9 жыл бұрын
Tuffsmoygles there's usually not that much significant shrinkage. If the mask begins to overcook, that's when things begin to shrink, but I usually don't bake them for that long because they get brittle and uncomfortable.

I don't have a lot of upper body strength and I can still do the carving ok. I think if you're only doing a mask every now and again, you should be fine, but doing many at once has given me some sore shoulder problems (especially if I don't take breaks). tl;dr work reasonable spans of time and take breaks and you should be fine even without a lot of arm strength! Sharp blades help make more of the cuts than your own strength does.

Is that breakable Like if it were to get dropped or punched Would it break?
@angelicartisan8 жыл бұрын
Nope! Leather is pretty flexible so it would not be damaged if dropped. It may bend a bit if it were punched really hard, but that would need to be a pretty hard punch. Leather masks are more like flexible and hardy thick material than breakable hard plastic.
@piper10428 жыл бұрын
Angelic Artisan - The Artisan Crafts of Angela R. Sasser That sounds cool. I plan on cosplaying as a kitsune however most kitsune masks are clay. And, clay is very breakable.

Also Could I use 3-4 oz vegetable tanned leather?
@angelicartisan8 жыл бұрын
That seems pretty thin and would be great for detail, but it may be a little too flimsy. I personally prefer 5-6 oz for thinner things so they're a little hardier and less delicate. There's less of a chance of burning during the hardening phase too if you're using heat to harden.
@angelicartisan8 жыл бұрын
You could also take a skiver and thin out the areas you want to be more flexible.
