When clear coating, you should always lightly sand the first coat, lay on a second coat, lightly sand the second coat as well, then spray a third finishing coat. Makes it as smooth as glass and much stronger than just one normal coat.

A few tips. Add more weight to the middle of you are doing it this way. Less chance for air pockets. Put an 1/8" round over on the edges, it prevents chipping if it wrecks into a curb as well as cleaning it up. Add fiberglass between one of the plies for added strength. Great work tho, love making these

I was thinking the same thing. If he had only purchased 2 pieces of wood to begin with, then he could've ripped them on the table saw at the same time with one going against the grain and one with the grain. I was also wondering why he didn't cut out the holes where the trucks go, and if those holes are even necessary or just gives a longboard it's natural look.

Nice tutorial! I was thinking if you had purchased 2 pieces of wood at first you could've cut one with the grain and one against the grain for more strength. And it would've been just as easy to rip them both at the same time on your table saw. I also would've tried to center the grain on the top board just for looks and design. But you did an excellent job here! Thanks for sharing!

:o Convex board shape would weird me out so much. I guess it flattened out once you rode it, but is this material more flexy than bamboo? Woulda thought you'd just try to go for a concave radial bend. Would it be possible to bend the large piece of wood before cutting it into thirds so that you could have a radial bend?
@Coprionix3 жыл бұрын
its obviously not as flexible as bamboo... and yes it is possible to bend it but if you do you have to glue every layer yourself, while the glue is drying you need to clamp the middle edit: and yes i do realize this is 4 years ago

HI, Burch and Maple veneers are very difficult to find where I'm from. The easiest or abundant supply here is 2mm Marine plywood. Have you tried making boards(decks) out of marine plywood? I do not know if marine plywood will be as durable as maple or will they be as easy to bend for shallow concave and slight kick-tail as 1.6mm maple.
@Ben-pi5ww5 жыл бұрын
Marine plywood is flexible but not very strong. I think it would be best to use baltic birch or maple.

no the wood has to form a bond with the glue
@bostontricker2118 жыл бұрын
The board looks really small in my opinion. Maybe because most longboards are at least 9 inch wide and 41 inch long max. Also you don't need to put riser pads on the board since the shape of the board is design to allow wheel clearance.

I'm currently building a longboard for a motorized longboard project I've been planning. I'm in school, and am taking advantage of my cabinetry class to build the board. I found a 5x1 1/2 sheet of Baltic Birch. However, the sheet is quite thick as it has 9 layers. Would i still need to go through the gluing process or am I good to go on shaping it?
@C4Fernandez8 жыл бұрын
The lamination of multiple plies is what keeps the board in that curved shape. You may need thinner sheets so you can laminate them into the right shape or use the Baltic Birch you currently have and laminate into a thicker longboard.
@chaincyclist27368 жыл бұрын
Is the curved shape necessary though? Will the board snap if I don't have it that way or would it just flex when i stand on it? Also to be more specific it's about a half inch thick.
@C4Fernandez8 жыл бұрын
I'd do a test and see if the board flexes if you stand on it. Because your sheets are quite thick, your longboard will most likely be classed as solid wood which has been done before. The curve also acts as suspension which will help for bumpy roads and will increase traction as your weight will cause pressure to be exerted on the trucks a lot more efficiently but not that much.
@chaincyclist27368 жыл бұрын
So what you're saying is that I don't need to have the curve, but that it's recommended?
@C4Fernandez8 жыл бұрын
Pretty much pretty fly guy. :) There is a few videos of hardwood long boards that you should check out!
