Part 3 of a series of videos following the making of a Triple Laminate Longbow. Last time we did the initial tillering process, this time we attach and carve the horn nocks. This video took several weeks to make, even though the process has been heavily edited for KZbin it's still nearly half an hour, showing how long good nocks take to make! Hello Philip, yet again a very informative video, I take it the next video will involve polishing, now that'll bring out the colours in the horn. Take care and stay safe.

Many thanks, this has taken 3 weeks to make, it's had very little response/views. I have shot the footage for the next video, but not sure if I can warrant the time, will have to see. It would have been sanding, varnishing and polishing the nocks.

@@longbows I know what you mean about taking 3 weeks out of manufacturing just too produce a video. Winter time I find isn't the best time to make bows as it's cold, damp, glue doesn't set properly. This would be time to make video's. Summer time is build time, 3 weeks you could make 2 or 3 bows, money in the bank. Your good at what you do, just pace how your time in sharing that knowledge. We've all got too earn a living.

As I have to make bows all year round and arrows etc I can't really do it like that, I was hoping to earn a living from videos, ho hum.

Depends how long your waiting list for bows is, we are obviously busy with sales on the website and eBay etc too.

Im curious what sort of bit you are using to drill the conical hole in the horn?
@longbows
@longbows 10 ай бұрын
Hi, we use a `spade bit`, the woodworking kind, then grind it down to a long triangular shape.

Great video, do you need to remeasure the nocking points from the centre of the bow before you start cutting them so they are the same distance?
@longbows
@longbows 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks, no matter how much info and time I spend on these videos, there is always something I forget to mention! I think you mean nock grooves, the nocking point is on the string. As I have drilled the nocks to the same depth and by virtue of their design, the 'meatiest' area of the horn, which is where I place the grooves, is about an inch up from the socket on both horns, so they naturally end up evenly distanced. It's something in have done so many times I don't measure it or think about it, hence forgetting to mention it in the video. Interestingly when I have removed nocks the groove is in the same place as the tillering grooves!

@@longbows thanks for the reply, yes, nock grooves is what I meant. I’ve not built a longbow yet but trying to ensure that’s where I would plan to put the thick part of the horn in the right place. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and experience.

I've seen someone say that if you fit them snug you can even keep them there without glue. I even used regular wood glue one time (couldn't find the epoxy) and it's still on the bow

I wouldn't like to try without glue, but, I have never had a pair of nocks fall off in 40 years of making bows.
