Flatbow, longbow. Call me a purist, but in my opinion, selfbow or several layers, traditional (horn and wood) or modern material (fiber) should be categories in archery competition

I’m listening to a book called ‘How to hunt with a bow and arrow’ by Saxton Pope, written around 1923. He references the seasoning by water method a couple of times. He advocates the traditional seasoning method but gives basic instructions regarding the running water method for the those wishing to speed things up. Given Pope lived in America and learnt a large amounts of bow craft from a native Indian, is it possible the water method is American in origin? It doesn’t seem to be very prevalent among English bow making culture, from what I’ve read at least.

That looks like a lower leg bone the canon bone. Where it splits into two is the fused metacarpals, and connects to that is two proximal phalanges (the bones in it's toes).

Mentioning the Slezenger bows used in the old black and white series, brings back memories. As a six year old, I watched this on TV in Germany the intro with Robin shooting the Longbow, was my inspiration, how to shoot a bow. I allways say Richard Green was my first archery teacher.

I'd think that many of the recommendations for draw, poundage, arrow weight, lengths etc. , were correct, considering the materials, methods, and components of the day. As usual, great content and advice.

They are in the spirit of the title, for beginners, someone perhaps buying without advice, this was a leaflet handed out at sports shops who may not have an expert on hand. They are a good rule of thumb, but we know that actually measuring someone's draw length and matching a bow to them is much more accurate than measuring their height. Glad you like the video.

Those draw and bow lengths seem rather limited compared to today, I think I'd end up shooting into my own hand if I shot a 28 inch arrow.

Great video! I was particularly interested as my wife inherited a boxed Ayers longbow and arrows, I'm guessing about the same vintage as the bows you showed, which I've successfully refurbished with the help of your many videos and supplies. Having finished, I couldn't resist cautiously drawing the bow bit by bit over a period of a few weeks, and I was surprised to find it didn't fail when fully drawn! Thanks for your help with this : )

Definately not a fletching. The Anthony rolls describe the Mary Rose arrows as livery sheaf arrows which are in the region of 30/32 inches long. These are not to be confused with the Crecy/Agincourt arrows which are an "ell" long, these are 37" long and without whipping or waxing. It is unlikely that feathers were carried for "repairs" as they had nearly five thousand arrows on board. Livery sheafs were counted in 12's. The ships fighting decks would have been manned by 50 musketeers as this was a long range engagement with the French galley determined to keep it long range. The ships captain Sir George Carew had men killed by French musketry while leading a detachment at the siege of Boulogne where the French mocked the English for using bows.
@longbows16 күн бұрын
thanks for watching and writing your thoughts. where are you getting your ideas about Crecy/Agincourt arrows? an "ell" is longer than 37"
@richardtroell640717 күн бұрын
Metric for the lumber dimensions . . . and then Imperial for the length . . . I fail to see why everyone is hung up on the Metric nonsense but one or the other please (preferably Imperial), not mixing both in one project.
@longbows16 күн бұрын
Just tradition and habbit, unlikely to change now. I hope you can see past our idiosyncrasies...like the word lumber, we dont use that for wood.
