The base is made up of three parts that interlock together with solid joints. The final piece will be glued together and painted. Since this will be painted the base is made up of laminated pieces of construction grade pine. All pieces were cut slightly over sized and laminated together with titebond III. FInal dimensions are below.
The Upper Arms- Two Arms Lap Jointed together. Each arm is two laminated pieces of 2x6. Length 45 inches x Width 2-1/2 inches x Height 3 inches
The Feet Base - Two feet bases lap jointed together made from 5 pieces of laminated 2x6. Length 39 inches x Width 7-1/2 inches x Height 4 inches
Pedestal Center - Made from 8 pieces of laminated 2x12x12
Height 27 inches x 11x11 sqaure with consideration of 2 inches being sunk into the pedestal base.
This base will support the 5/4 maple top that will be 54 inches in diameter.

Its refreshing to see a woodworker on youtube who isn't a hipster with a ton of expensive tools or an elitist who doesn't work with pine. You make with no restraint. Thank you.

I am building one right now similar to yours, using similar approaches to the pedestal and upper cross members. It was very helpful seeing how you put the trunk of table into the base of the pedestal and how you cut the dados for the cross member in the top. Rather than one solid trunk for the pedestal, mine consists of four arches, which curve upward to the table top, and each will be laminated to the same centre block. I loved your use of the chainsaw and grinder. Your skill level with basic tools is awesome!! Andy Block

Love your chainsaw use. A thought; the pedestal is only countersunk thru 1 1/2" allowing, over time a wobble. I would lengthen your pedestal to allow full countersink. I would pick up a piece of steel 1/8" at least 1 1/4" wider than your pedestal foot, drilling holes on the perimeter and 4 in the area the pedestal contact. During final assembly this will allow you to put 4" or better screws thru steel plate into pedestal. You'll need to route out an area on the underside of foot that is ground contact 1/8" deep, for steel. Possibly adding 1 shorter 2x to each side in width of feet, this will help with stability for years of use.

Thanks! The saw is an ECHO cs-400, so a mid size saw with the stock 18inch bar. The chain was most likely a semi chisel safety chain, because I on;y just started using non-safety chain. I have a carving bar for that saw, but the cuts weren't really intricate enough to warrant using it. The regular setup did the job just fine.

This is so educational. Thanks for sharing so much knowledge. I do have one question....maybe a silly question: Your lumber looked straight when you started the project.....all the lumber I buy is always too messed up to get a good lamination. Did you do something to flatten/straighten your lumber up before starting this project (using a jointer or something)? Thanks again....just awesome work there!
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 6 жыл бұрын
I don't have a joiner these are straight from the store. I spend the time picking out the straightest ones, but I also only work with 2x6's versus 2x4's they are an all around better grade of lumber and substantially less bowed/twisted/cupped then 2x4's. The extra cost of the 2x6 and time spent ripping them down is well worth it for the straight lumber. I also use the lumber I get within a day or two. Even the kiln dried variety have a tendency to move how they want the longer they lay around the shop.

Good job! What kind of wood filler do you use for those nicks and for the area that the lap joint sits? Looking for a flawless finish where the joints are. Thanks!
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 5 жыл бұрын
I didn't have a ton to fill on this, but the best wood filler is a little bit of wood glue and sawdust from the project you are working on, mixed together to a peanut butter like consistency. Strong and practically free.

HI there! Do you know if this size single pedestal base would be sturdy enough to uphold a 38" x 66" rectangle top for a dining table? I love this base you made it is amazing!! Please let me know, I would like to try making our own dining table for our remodel but I need to make sure it turns out really sturdy and safe for our granddaughter who will grow up in this home. I need it to be a single pedestal because we will be putting an L shaped dining bench and I need to make sure there's ample foot and leg room all around the table so that no matter where someone sits it will be comfortable so that people will want to stay there and hang out longer!
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 4 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how heavy the top is as well as the size. A 66 inch rectangle is also very different then a 66 inch circle, with a circle the weight is distributed evenly off the base, with a rectangle your two ends canter-lever further then the two short sides. The dimensions of the pedestal in this video is definitely too small. The ratio should be that the pedestal is about 2/3 the size of the top, so at 66 you are looking at at least 44 inches, and your sides are only 38 inches wide. Personally if a customer approached me with this I would recommend two pedestals for a table this size.

I am considering making a long dining room table. Your video, and the other parts, have given me some good tips and ideas on how to accomplish it. Questions: can two of these pedestals be used for a long rectangular(ish) table about eight feet by just under four feet? Will they be sturdy enough to support a somewhat light table top? Should a base bar be installed with it or perhaps a long arm connecting the two? Thank you for this, nicely done.
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 5 жыл бұрын
I think support wise two bases built similar to the specs in the video is more then strong enough and will work fine. That Ash table top I put on my base weighed a ton, and there was absolutely no flexing with the base. I have done other work for that client, so I have been back in the house and the table is still perfect. If it was my build I would use a stretcher bar on the bottom mortised and tennoned into place. However, I have done refinishing work on two long tables with dual pedestals that had no stretcher and there was nothing wrong with them. They were dinning room tables, so they don't see a lot of action. If this is your main table, that people sit at a lot, lean on a lot, and gets shuffled around a lot I would want the stretcher to ensure alignment stays true over time (especially if the table is picked up and moved, without one I would be nervous about the separate bases shifting). But with properly building and attaching two separate pedestals sans stretcher I think you would be fine. I am a self-professed over builder, which is good piece of mind for something not going in my home, but isn't necessarily a requirement for personal projects. Hope that helps.

For this project it was probably just a flap disc. I have since upgrade to an abrasive wood carving disc that is all metal, last longer, and works faster.

where did you get the dimensions or the paper sketch.
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks
@HoneyBadgerWoodWorks 5 жыл бұрын
The sketch and dimensions came from my head based on my knowledge of flexing and load requirements for the top going on here. The basic style that went with the dimensions was from the customer. So the red paper sketch was something I drew out of those requirements, not something I pulled from the internet.

Yeah, I have found through trial and error that I have to pretty much stand next to my Ipad for good volume and that adding music on the how-to videos is unnecessary. There is not much I can do about the pre-recorded speaking (that I know of), but I think when I have some time over the holidays I am going to go through and get rid of the music to help the problem. Thanks for watching!
