Wow, I look at a lot of these old native way of things, and I truly believe they are AMAZING. I just wonder how they figured out that seal blubber burned, or how to correctly build an igloo in the first place.

Very cool! I believe caribou fat also works for the kudloo light. As likely does a lot of other fats. Soapstone was commonly used for the kudloo.

Last year I finally closed the roof and got an igloo made. Thsi year I'm using a waste basket to make snow blocks. Even powdery snow works, but you have to let the blocks set and freeze solid for 5+ hours before you can build with them.

@surfin4 The hole in the ceiling is to let air circulate, to let moisture escape (otherwise it condenses on the walls and wets the floor at the perimeter), and to permit smoke and gases to escape from lamps or stoves.

@SmoothCriminalAaron It's called a quinzhee. Less skill required to make a quinzhee, but they aer less stable, more prone to collapse, typically much less roomy, and unless the walls are of uniform thickness and a proper catenary arch is created, a quinzhee will sag and the ceiling get lower and lower until it's unusable after a few days. But igloos require a certain kind of compacted, wind-swept snow that's hard to find. I use the Icebox system, for any kind of snow.

Make piles of snow and stomp on them. Then leave it to set for 5 hrs or so. Then pile more snow and stomp on it some more until you have a large pile of hard packed snow. I discovered that even fluffy snow will harden once its been stepped on. Then cut it with a handsaw.
@fosschr
@fosschr 15 жыл бұрын
True. Making your own snowblocks works though, Further, even if it collapsed the average person is strong enough to push through 5 or 600 pounds of snow.

@ZebbMassiv I've camped and slept in both quinzhees and igloos. A quinzhee is a snow shelter that doesn't quite compare with an igloo in terms of comfort and stability, but they take little skill to make. Just do a search for the word quinzhee and you'll find videos on it. I have a video on how my wife and I build our igloos on my channel. Cheers, -Martin

Despite popular belief snow shelters are not toastingly warm. They work by providing a warmer environment inside than outside, by blocking off the chilling wind, and by trapping body heat.

They didn't show a tunnel entry, sleeping ledges, or the water proof liner that gets hung like a tent inside the dome. The liner is hung from hooks made of bone or wood that are poked thru the dome from the outside. They have a flat "head" on the outside end that keeps them from being pulled thru the snow. The water that melts from the dome runs down the liner and is channeled to a hole that's dug to get it out of the way.

Is that why artists use it a lot? Adds to the creativity... And yes, it does affect awareness which is why some people that smoke it become paranoid as they become extra sensitive . Just cos they are dopey doesn't mean they are less aware ^^ I'm sure Sherlock Holmes had a bit of weed love in his pipe to help him solve those mysteries ^^ LOL

Alle these...pot comments made me think about it, and yes I admit that inside an igloo on NewYearsEve it would be a nice cosy setting for it... . That starting fire looked... . That's what lured some comments I think. Ppl who talk shit about marijuana are just scared of the outlaw, brainwashed, don't know the all story, can't take their personal side at things without picking parties. You can be sporty (not a champion) and still enjoy a pot now and then, just use your brain, like in everything..
