The answer back in the day to only 10 seconds of sample time was to sample the record fast and slow the sample down, and by sampling one shot hits in mono.

Doesn't really sound like Pete Rock. PR, as the self proclaimed Soul Brotha #1, has more melodic soulful sounding beats with more swing to the drums. This one sounds more like a Large Professor meets The Beatnuts type deal. With a more staticy SP1200 sound added to it, it could also sound like a Muggs beat. Either way, it's a great beat though. It has all the fundamental things of a classic 90s beat covered.
