Hi everyone,
I thought I'd show you how to make these super cute pin cushion jars. They're really quick and easy to make and with adult supervision, its a fun project to do with your kids. They make great craft room storage, teacher gifts, fund raiser gifts, stock items for your own store and much more. Use your imagination and you could even personalize them or theme them to make them extra special.

Awesome! So easy. Tip: if you do a thin layer of batting/fluff or whatever for the layer just beneath the fabric (and honestly, you can use the stuffing from an old bed pillow because no one is going to be sleeping on the project) and then fill the center with steel wool, it will help to sharpen your pins as you put them in and remove them.

@@DawnsDays Happy to share. Honestly, I didn't learn this until I started woodworking. Some of the hand tools you use require near constant sharpening. Sharpening card scrapers, after having learned about the old days of sharpening needles (as a nursing student), made the pin thing as a novice quilter make sense. It may be microscopic, but every time you put pin through fabric, it deflects the tippy tip just a teeny bit. If you can gently put the tip back where it was simply by inserting and pulling out the tip of a pin as it moves through steel wool in a pin cushion, it would be like physically sharpening the pin every time you use it. Works for me anyway.

I have to say I'm very happy to have chatted and at the same time, am a little creaped out at the similarity. I also learned about the old days of sharpening needles because I was an ER/Trauma nurse in the highest volume ER in our state for 18 years. I'm also a woodworker that volunteers in a 50+ woodshop. Isn't it amazing how things we think of as "soft" will deflect the tip of a pin, needle, etc.? Have you ever taken a used needle and run it along cotton? Okay, those days of multiple use needles are well over, but we were taught with needles that had been used on dummies for IV starts. It's amazing how little it takes to deform the end of a very sharp needle (or blade even). And one really scarred up vein can bend a whole needle, not just the tip, yes?

@@DawnsDays I did! I use it all the time while sewing, so handy. Beats chasing around those red "tomato" pin holders. It stays right where you put it :) Going to make one for my daughter now that she's back into sewing.
