I had a very similar idea for a heat treat forge. Im glad to see how well it works. Good job fellas.

Way way cool man. What an honor. Thank you for sharing an extremely cool video. I just built my first coal forge to go with a sweet peter wright anvil and hope to one day have a gas setup. Thanks again for sharing. Stay safe Brother.

Hey Patrick good to have you hanging out with us all. We’re putting together a great online course for guys just starting in knife making. Kyle is teaching a class like that at Blade August 7-9. We are getting ready to build another huge sword. We are creating online courses currently. Looking forward to showing you all what we are doing in the shop. We are fine tuning and modifying our sword heat treat oven. It’s coming out spectacular. Gas and electric with digital readouts. Be safe and be careful. Cheers. Dad

Nice forge. Thanks for sharing.

Really nice for a quick gas forge. Wish you would have kind of stressed purging and making the cylinder gas free before you cut it and maybe showed how you did it. Propane tanks can make great forges but can also be explosive if you start hacking on them without making sure ALL of the LP is out of the tank first.

Agreed, that was quite scary to watch. If wind or time had put enough oxygen back into the bottle, it could have ended or seriously injured your dad. And potentially your youtube viewers. 10 mins filling with a garden hose could save a life. Great build otherwise! Safety first!

I'd be interested to see a video where you talk about making kevin. Now that you've made kevin, are there things you would change about this simpler design? How much more money and difficulty does it take to make the more complex kevin version?

Hey Luke we are in the process of cannibalizing Kevin into a propane salt bath heat treating oven. That’s our idea of making it simpler and more consistent heat. We will have vids showing some of the progress. Chao Dad

The uniformity of the heat looked great! Is that one of those really pricey (i.e. Industrial) laser thermometers? I've heard some mixed things about their accuracy, some people say they aren't reliable on hot (bright) steel and others say they work nicely, how are you guys liking it? I'm looking forward to seeing more! Thanks for sharing :)

Been thinking of doing the same, except with a water heater tank. Would love to see more detail, if I'm understanding the set up, you are using the top for the burner? I'm thinking of putting a single blown burner in the bottom, but not sure how even the temp will be. BTW, I work with propane and the danger is that it's heavier than air, so simply taking the top off doesn't get rid of it. You need to purge it with something, or let it drain out some way. The old standby method is to fill with water. Also a danger of using a cutting torch on an enclosed vessel via acetylene/oxygene building up.

Hey Bro you be very careful cutting the tank. I cut underground fuel storage tanks for a living back in the day and we purged the explosive gases out using a $4,000 sniffer tool with bottled nitrogen, dry ice , or a reverse venture. Sometimes throwing sparks and flames directly on gasoline and diesel fuel. But we did it by the book. Water has hydrogen and OXYGEN. Oxygen bad. We are doing a serious makeover on our sword heat treating tank. Using 3 medium size venturi style burners. Going digital with propane and electric heat source. We have a huge sword build coming up next. Be careful and be safe. Dad

@@KyleRoyerKnives No kidding be careful cutting tanks. My preferred way is to drain all the propane out and purge with water, then throw on a brush/trash fire and let anything left in it cook out. Tanks set long before the trash is lit, not that hot, but gets rid of some of paraffin and oil residues. Afterward, I use cut off disk to open it up. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with for an even heating sword forge.

Hey 52100 fun fact, some fuels impregnate into their storrage tank walls. A diesel tank removed and set on top of the ground without the proper amount of wall removed , even after 10 years, is able to release enough fuel vapor in full sunlight to explode if there is an ignition source. I.e. static electricity, lighter, spark from a friction source... Good times . Be safe and be careful 👍🏻🔥☕️⚔️ Dad

@@KyleRoyerKnives Fuel or gas or oil or propane will not go into the "pores" of steel. It actually can, under laboratory conditions and extreme pressures, but not in normal practice. What it can do is soak into any corrosion or cracks or folds or possibly a coating inside the tank. Take a diesel tank and clean it with a good grease cutting soap and it will not release fuel vapor, provided the tank is properly cleaned, all the nooks and crannies, I mean clean, not a simple drain and rinse. Really big tanks might be an issue simply due to the large size making it impractical to properly clean. Propane, while it burns clean, is a pretty dirty fuel as well and is full of oils and paraffin, a residue that gets left behind when vented out. Any residue left behind can outgas and cause an issue. Any amount of corrosion is like a sponge for residual liquids and it doesn't take much to make a lot of vapor.

wpuldnt a verticle heat treat oven cause the blade to unevenly? i mean heat rises... so the bottom would be cooler than the top...

Awesome video! I want to build one soon. A quick question if you don’t mind. Are you running three burners in it? I will only have a single burner propane forge when I switch from coal.. or will I need to purchase a few more burners lol
@KyleRoyerKnives5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! It’s a single burner. We had to fiddle with the air flow a lot to get the temperature just right. ~Team Royer
@EchiLoki4 жыл бұрын
Two burners was enough for a 3' tank? I just started cutting one up and then I read that you should have one burner for every 300 square inch. And now I'm rethinking everything. Chopping it down to 2' and doing 4 burners. Did I just mess up on my math or something? Great work by the way!

Thanks my friend. Glad you’re here. More burners will give more constant heat. Good think’n Toney Dad

You guys must have balls that clank when you walk. I had a tank a few years ago and filled it with water. Dumped the water out and it still stunk. For two months it still stunk and never did get the nerve to cut it open. I was waiting for the tank to exploded like a damn bomb.
