In this video I will show you how to make a drip irrigation system out of PVC. I will also so you how to glue PVC pipe. This irrigation system will allow you to maximize your water efficiency and improve plant growth. My set up cost me about $100 for a 400 square foot garden.

Just a couple notes; 1)The Print on the pipe is already in a straight line. 2) Heat the PVC pipe end and "swag" it, and you don't need to buy the couplings - $. 3) The hose swivel comes in MIP versions, so you just need the FIP PVC adapter. There is also a PVC version of the swivel hose adapter with slip end - $. 4) I ended up building mine with emitters. 1/4" drill. 11/32" tap in a slow drill. Thread in the emitters. Constant pressure thru the pipe no matter how long. Available in 1/4 gph, up to 10 gph. Easy change - out to a different size / need, and plugs thread in for unused holes. Emitters add 10 - 25 cents each to the build. You can find Bargain Bags of them for even less. You can also add 1/4" drip feeder hose to "fine tune" the water location to things like Tomato plants, etc.

Great tips here. Are you using the emitters on pvc and just popping them in? Or are you using those softer hoses?

Watched so many videos, but none made as much sense as this one to me - never did this before nor have I ever worked with pvc pipes before. Thank you very much for this

You did a great job breaking this type of project down which for me can become overwhelming. I love how organized and clean it is and can be put away at the end of the season to keep it lasting a long time. I’ve invested in wicking beds and reusing ibc totes that formerly had fish oil for dogs in them… they’ve done amazingly well. This summer I plan on finally covering the plastic with cedar to clean up the look and help preserve from the sun but I still have areas that need a garden spot in the ground like for my herbs and strawberries and this would make a difference in how I water

Just built our irrigation system out of pvc for a 16x20 vegetable garden. We used 3/4 for mainline and 1/2 for the rows. We did the shut off valves for each row also. Works great so far!

Thank you for the great video! I have a bunch of 1" PVC around. Would that be too big for this type of system using a standard water hose? My garden is about the same size as yours. Thanks in advance.

I was actually going to use 1” pvc but decided to go smaller to save money. 1 inch should perform just as well. Thanks for checking out the channel.

Looks great. I plan on doing something similar this week. I have a smaller garden about 12 x 20. Is there any reason why you chose to put the ball valves in the middle of the garden instead of at the end where you can control from 1 end and have far fewer valves? Thanks.
@ArtisanMade
@ArtisanMade 4 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The only reason I put the valves in the middle is because I used fewer valves this way and was able to save money.

Also I plan on extending the garden next year having a very long run of tubing would create water pressure problems at the far end.

I have a question about the valves. I saw some at the big box store and there were different types of valves - they all look the same, same size but the description somewhat differs. some had ftp & the another description - I didn't take a photo so this is from memory. Hope you can clarify - thanks!
@ArtisanMade

I think what you saw is that some have a male end and some female. I used female valves

Great job and instructions. Thanks! I do have 3 questions. I wonder if this would work well for a 1000 sq. ft.garden? Do you only drill one hole in the pvc per plant to get the needed water to it? I would think certain crops would need more holes perhaps or would one hole (1/16") be adequate?
@ArtisanMade
@ArtisanMade 3 жыл бұрын
Thank You! I think you could do this for a 1000 sq ft garden but, I would avoid long runs of piping. If your run is too long, the water pressure at the end of the run will be weaker, and as a result, the plants at the end get less water. I set up my pressure valves in the middle of my garden so I would have a pressure valve supplying 20ft of piping instead of 40 ft. It also depends on if you gave good water pressure in general. If necessary, you could set up more than on zone. As far as the holes go; I would say start with one, and as your plants get bigger you can always add more. If you make a mistake, you can easily plug up the extra hole with some tape. Good Luck!

Instead of using the swivel to the threaded connection. There is a connector in the irrigation department thats female threaded and swivels. Less parts and cheaper.

Is it possible to irrigate half acre land using PVC pipes and valves with water coming directly from a borewell (1' output).
@ArtisanMade
@ArtisanMade 3 жыл бұрын
Assuming you have decent water pressure you could irritate large tracts of land, but you would have to divide the system into separate zones

What is the best way to clean out the inside of the 10’ sections of PVC pipes in my system at the end of the season?
@lindamcham428
@lindamcham428 6 ай бұрын
You can take a woven kitchen plate scrubber (ring like thing) and pull it apart. Tie a 15 foot string to one end and a pencil to the other end. Drop the pencil the the pipe and drag the scrubber through the pipe.
@RonaldRugen
@RonaldRugen 2 ай бұрын
Is there a limit to how many rows this will cover? It seems to me like if you have a bigger garden you might have to have two different sections because the water pressure will be diminished.
@ArtisanMade
@ArtisanMade 2 ай бұрын
Yes. I didn’t have any problems with pressure but adding valves would turn it into multiple zones
