So a lot of people contact us to ask us what to do about a bunny who has become aggressive. And most people will tell us that the bunny was not aggressive when they acquired him or her but has progressively become more so while living in their homes. This is a tricky question because the very first you want to do with a rabbit is get him or her spayed or neutered so that whatever behavior you're seen is not just hormonally driven behavior. Once the bunny is spayed or neutered, if you continue to see the same level of aggressiveness, then you want to start working with the bunny because bunnies are not born being aggressive toward human hands.
That's something they learn and they learn it because they're scared of the human hand approaching them. So let's take a look. We've set up this cage not because it's a bunny's regular cage, it's not. This is just a demo cage that we can show a couple of techniques for approaching bunnies that will reduce aggression. So, one thing to remember is when you buy a cage in a store, if that's where you get your bunny cage, if you can, avoid cages that have very small, front opening doors. Rabbits are prey animals and like most prey animals their eyes are placed in the sides of their head, so that they can't see very well directly in front of themselves. And when you have to get a rabbit out of a front opening cage, the rabbit will just see something moving toward its head or its face and may lunge at whatever that object is, and it could be your hand. So, what you want to do s get a cage with a door that's big enough to comfortably fit your hand in without having it centered right at the rabbit every time you open it. On of our volunteers has noticed that if you put your head in, the top of your head in, the rabbit tends to be more comfortable than if you first address the rabbit with your hand. But I'll show you what I do.
I open the cage door here and I always give the rabbit a chance to back off and to move away. I never continue to move toward a rabbit if the rabbit backs off. Without stopping, waiting and trying again. And that respect of the rabbit's space pays huge dividends because the rabbit learns very quickly that it doesn't have to get away from you. Well, this is great, how do you get a rabbit out of the cage? Open the door, right? So when you're working with a rabbit who is aggressive, and I'm told by the adopter that this rabbit used to be very aggressive and she's been working with her for a while now and the rabbit is less aggressive. But what you want to do now with a rabbit who will lunge at you, is use your hand carefully on the side of the rabbit's face rather than directly in front. So you bring your hand in, let's see, how will we arrange this? Loretta, may I have you? There you go. You bring your hand into the cage without moving directly toward the rabbit. Without reaching your hand in and grasping the rabbit. You bring your hand in and pause about six inches from the rabbit's eye. Pause your hand so that the rabbit doesn't see continued motion towards its head. So that it has a choice about what to do. I move my hand and I pause. the rabbit's exploring my hand now. I bring it in again on the side rather than directly in front and I pause. And then what I do is I start touching the rabbit's head very briefly. There, I touch her head and I remove my hand. I touch it and I remove my hand. Touch remove my hand.
Touch remove my hand. Touch remove my hand. Why am I doing this? Because I am removing my hand to keep under the rabbit's threshold of tolerance. The rabbit may or may not want you to touch her head and you're giving her an opportunity to react and let you know what she wants. If I touch and remove my hand and touch and remove my hand and then I bring it in and the rabbit turns toward it, she may be asking me to move it out or she may be asking me for more grooming. In this instance, she's asking me

Prince Benjamin Mine sure is! He beat up my dog so much that I have to put the dog on a chair for the entire time the bunny's out. Which stinks because I bought the bunny for my five pound poodle as a companion. Started off good, now the bunny runs the house. Except for my parrots. He's scared of them and they're the aggressive ones. The bunny gets too close to their cage, here comes a lovebird flying down with an attitude. This is my first rabbit and I'm finding him fascinating. I wish he'd stop charging but other than that, he's a lovable scamp. :D

Rabbits may not speak english or any other language, but they certainly understand. I think all animals have that sixth sense, they can feel your energy and what you're trying to convey. If you are scared or angry, they can and will sense and understand it.

Definitely socialdef3 !! My bunny Pogo knows exactly what I'm trying to say to him. Animals just do have that sense of human!
@rocketbeagle0
@rocketbeagle0 7 жыл бұрын
It's not really a sixth sense or a "human" sense. They're reading your body language and tone. Animals have to be good at reading body language and tone, because for almost all of them, thats the only way they communicate.

Great tips! My daughter recently rescued a domestic bunny from a public park, so we have been scrambling to learn lots, and quickly. This morning I tried the tip of poking my face into her cage, she hopped up and sniffed me and then allowed my hand to come in without lunging or growling this time. We will be taking her to the vet this afternoon, and saving money for a rabbit run area and spay / neuter.

it's not all that hard. main things to look out for are their eyes and nose + stance. a relaxed rabbit will lie down into a comfortable position much like cats, or bunch up into a fur potatoe and rest/sleep. a stressed out rabbit is identifiable by wide open eyes, frantic nose movement and tense, stiff body stance. if they feel really comfortable and safe, they even flop over onto their sides and sleep like that

I wish you guys had a video on how to handle blind rabbits, I know it's a little rare for someone to have a blind bunny but I do, I love him a lot. I got Harry when he could still see but his catarax ( don't know how to spell it) got worse and worse and now he is fully blinded. It's hard to handle him because he will get scared if he feels anything come near him, he's not aggressive at all or anything.

I used to rub my fingers together as a reached for my blind dog. (along with speaking to her) She could hear my fingerprints rubbing so she knew my hand was going to touch her. She had less startle response.
@strawberrycherrybaby
@strawberrycherrybaby 6 жыл бұрын
This is an old comment, but my bunny was temporarily blinded (bad eye scratch) and I had a couple tricks to make her feel safe. Try to always talk around them, so they know where you are around them and they don't get startled by you suddenly approaching. I also do the 'finger rubbing' technique from the previous comment, and that worked really well to associate a sound with touch so she could hear me coming to touch her. She also liked to smell people to identify them and definitely preferred some people's smell by association. And just like with blind people, don't move his things around too much, he could get aggressive if he doesn't feel safe in his home or can't find his way around it well. It's all about using their other senses to let them know they're safe.

I used to have a bunny and she had such a personality.. very temperamental, but never bite me or hurt me. She hated being picked up, but she would jump on me when I stroke her a bit. She would then never want to leave and used to fall asleep while being stroked on her head. Her head would become so flat and she would close her eyes all the way... so cute! Every morning I used to call her name and she would quickly hop towards her cage door waiting for me to open it. I would then put my hand in front of her and she would lie her head on it, with my second hand I would stroke her head until she closes her eyes :) That was our good morning thing.. I miss her a lot! My little Fluffminster

I find these rabbit/bunny video's very useful... Because I found a rabbit that was wild but was surprisingly used to human interaction so my sister, her friend, and my mother decided to capture him.... he's snow white with black eyes but because we life in the dessert he would have been easy prey to predators in the area... that's why we caught him... we checked with the vet and looked around to see if he belonged to anyone and he didn't...so we decided to keep him and because I'm not used to owning my own rabbit I find these very useful... especially with a wild rabbit that you know almost next to nothing about... nor does he know anything about you... thank you for these useful how to videos...and I hope to see many more..

Excellent points and truly they apply to all creatures including human beings. One has to remember that they are interacting with another living creature who has feelings, may not feel well, or just not in the mood to be bothered at the moment. Animals (including humans) 99.9% of the time will give indication of their mood and it is up to the pet owner to LEARN their INDIVIDUAL pet moods, personality and body language sometimes even vocals. Absolutely wonderful video!!!

I had a rabbit named Heidi once. I kind of adopted her from a classmate because they couldn't take care of her anymore. She was great the first month, very nice and approachable. But soon after, she started acting weird, exposing her neck and hyperventilating. I didn't know what was happening so we just gave her some space in her cage. We sometimes left the door open on her cage because she liked to stick her head out to look around, but one night she just suicide jumped out of the cage and died.

FYI - This is a good demonstration why having the bunny cage on the floor, or at least having a ramp from the cage to the floor, is so helpful. That was you reduce the amount of fighting involved in getting them in and out of the cage. They will sometimes go in and out on their own. Feed them when playtime is over, making some noise, and you'll never have to fight to get them back in again.

Thank You so much for your knowledgeable videos on how to care for Rabbits. I have watched them all and have learned so much. Thank You!! I have a friend who has a indoor rabbit. The rabbit will sometimes run around a person and then spray like a cat does to mark his territory. My Questions are: Is the rabbit marking his territory? Do both male and females do this? Is there some way to prevent it?

Great video. I learned something, and found validation for some of the things I have observed on my own. I am a new rabbit owner ( 8th month with Trixie Love) and things are going really well- especially after I stopped some of my own behavior (like picking up Trixie Love- who does not like that). I found your series of videos invaluable. Thank You.

So what does it mean when I slowly put my hand next to his head, and he actually moves his head under my hand..? Does he want me to pet him? Sometimes he just keeps sitting with his head down when I pet him, not sure if he is scared or relaxed. I try to look at his breathing and stuff but I am not sure..

I have a different case, I have a rescue who needs advice. She has been surrendered at under a year old with them using cat gloves to get her out of the carrier! She was given away as her aggression was deemed to bad for their child. Now, former Fluffy, now Tabatha has been discovered very confident and aggressive. She has been desexed hoping that would work but minimal change happened. She goes out of her way to chase down and attack anyone but when it comes to rabbits acts like they arnt even there, like she doesn't know what they are. After thinking it may be dominance or territorial change of cage and other rabbits blankets were introduced, no change, I suggested using touching with paint brushes through the cage before petting but what else can we do?

Good info but may be can use a more skittish and shy rabbit like Netherland Dwarf instead of Lionhead? Lionhead is one of the friendliest rabbit and they love human's interaction and love to be groomed and picked up for cuddle.

Someone I know bought a bunny and kept it in the gardenshed. They neglected it and only fed him 2 times a day and that's it. He survived for yéárs, but was kept in a small cage and didn't get toys or love. After all those years, they tried picking him up and he bit them. As soon as he got the sniffles, they put him down. Imagine what a life it could've had with caring owners.

Mine is a half too. Not sure what the other half is though. We found her by an elementary school, by the garbage. She is the sweetest thing on earth! I have had her for about 2 years now, and she has never bit me once! We think she may have been a show rabbit, because her nails were trimmed and her fur was sleek when we picked her up. Hoping to have Alice for lots of years to come 😊

Way I got along with my shy, scared bunny: • Let her get along with the space • Talk to her, still not petting • Go wash your hands, rince it with soap very good (Preffered fruit scent soap), wash and dry very good • Slowly move your hand to the bunny, find out which spot they like most to be pettet (My bunny loves her cheeks being pet, she hates her ears being pet) • Pet her slowly and calmly • If your pet was outside (Mine was), bring her inside, again let her get along with the area. • Get her out of her box, slowly • Bring her some chew toys • Let her roam around the couch, or wherever you sit, she will eventually come on your lap or put her paws on your shoulder, or similar. -Hope this helped ♡

I have a rabbit named Luna, she is aggressive and I show her in 4-H. That means I can't get her spayed. She's bitten me once before and she grunts and charges after me. I have to go to pick her up with a blanket and\or gloves. I try to work with her every day so she's nice to judge. Also, how do you introduce 1 female rabbit (not spayed) and another female rabbit(not spayed)? Because Luna will be living with our other female rabbit and 6 chickens. How do I introduce them?Please comment down below any suggestions!

My rabbit was not at all aggressive. She was always asking for pets and was very clingy but suddenly she started biting me very aggressively whenever I or anyone comes close to her(without her food 😑). I don't know what happened which scared or angered her. It might be hormonal problems but I can't get her spayed or neutered because my parents will not allow it. I get sad because she always followed me everywhere and now she only comes to me for treats and food .😕

I'd really recommend convincing your parents to spay her. I was 12 when I got my rabbits, I'm 21 now and they both have cancer. One uterine and the other has cancer for a 2nd time. Unfortunately, I will be having them put down after 9 years. Unspayed female rabbits will almost certainly die of reproductive cancer over old age so please try convince them!

Thank you so much for these videos, they are so helpful. Question: We have a 2 year old neutered mini lop and he completely freaks out when picked up, he kicks and bites and arches his back and flails. We only pick him up when necessary. He doesn't like to be petted really but he DOES like it when you cuddle up to him and bring him in against your body and scratch his back, etc. He will start licking the floor or licking your face when scratched and will fall asleep next to you cuddled up. However, 90% of the time, he is cranky and seems very unhappy. He's an indoor rabbit, we let him out every day for a few hours to run around but he really doesn't run around, he goes to one spot and lies down and sleeps. When you show him that you want to pet him, he jerks up and goes into a tight ball with his head down and backs up. When we first got him, he would run and buck but now, never. He will hop away from us and kick his feet back at us but that is it now. We are wondering why he is so cranky and resistant to human touch. We've had him since he was 6 weeks old and he's never been ignored. My daughter is 13 and she is so upset and says he hates her no matter what she does. She tried picking him up in the ways that you showed, also tried the nail cutting positions and he flipped out every time and tried to bite her. Thanks.

I've had rabbits for a few months now and my experience is somewhat different from what is said in this video. I did not know rabbits do not like hands coming straight to their face. From the beginning I would hand-feed my rabbits small treats, like a sunflower seed, and let the rabbit take it from my fingers. So my rabbits have associated my hand with treats and totally love to see my hand coming fast toward their nose. And no matter how small the treat (even a tiny flake of rolled oats), they never bit my fingers. It almost seems like they can feel with their teeth. Hand-feeding an animal is by far the best way for the animal to bond quickly with us. The nudging is to get things out of the way. I keep my rabbits loose. If anything is on their escape path, they will pick it up and carry it out of the way or nudge it. So I understand nudging is not their way of saying "stop petting me," it's their way of saying "keep your hand out of my way in case I need to escape." So if you run your hands from their ears back, they will love the petting.

My almost year old English Lop is only aggressive in his cage but is fine out of his cage. My sister's Netherland Dwarf makes sounds like a chicken (not kidding) and lunges once in a while. We also have a Bernese Mountain Dog that will sometimes avoid us or come running at us.

they may look cute and all, but they can be pretty cantankerous...I have 5 rabbits, and just like any other animal (or person), they each have their own personalities. Case in point, my little Blue-eyed White netherland dwarf looks like an angel, but she can be very aggressive. She growls and lunges just like the lady in the video says. She even nips and bites, However, once she's out of her cage, she's very sweet. This is most likely due to the fact that she hasn't been spayed yet.

I have two rabbits both supposedly Netherland dwarves (but the male has grown bigger than other Netherland Dwarves so I'm guessing he's a normal rabbit, not a dwarf) I'm seeing to get them neutered. Anyways, the male is very sweet (although he occasionally chews my hair...) and looks for me when I open the cage door and when I pet him he pretty much falls asleep. But the female is the exact opposite. When I open the cage door she gets herself to the opposite corner and bites anything that gets close. Im afraid I might scare her so when I let her out for a run I kind of just sit by. I've treated her like I treat the male so I dont quite understand why she's so aggresive. Another question if someone doesnt mind, what spots are the best parts to pet them? Like where do they like you petting most?

My bun, Carrot who is a holland lop, likes to be pet on his cheeks, but since your female is kind of aggressive I would not recomend that right away. He also likes to be pet on the head. When I pet his head I pull his ears back *gently* so I pet them to. His ears hang down. Try to just sit by the cage near your rabbit so she can get use to your smell and movement and appearance. GOOD LUCK! :)

+Jorja Paterson here are some pointers about reactive behavior in response to that one situation. She is now protecting herself. It will take a long time but you can desensitize her to dog smells and behaviors if you work really hard. You actually are working to override her survival instinct and learn to trust you. I suggest you only work on her tolerance level. For example, I would start with a channel like Animal Planet and get her used to the constant barking. As soon as she ignored this I would move to the next level which is bringing several dog smells home and leaving them near and in her enclosure. There are stages and it may take a long time but if it is your goal then by all means pursue it!
