If you're on a really tight budget, use 8' cedar fence pickets. I bought six and cut two in half for the short sides, and used a couple of 2x2 cedar posts for the corner stakes. I had some stainless steel deck screws left over from another project. The box has been in for three years and is as solid as the day I built it.

Thank you so much for this easy how to. My husband is a high custom millworker, but finding the time to build garden boxes isn't always easy. Sooo yesterday I typed in how to make raised garden beds. You popped up first and I got started. At 10:53 I started measuring and by 12:40, I was completely done filled with soil and all! Crazy proud moment here and making 3 more today! I actually made them 10' x 32" and I love them! Great idea re stapling the weed block! Wish I could upload an image! Thanks again!!!!

Thank you Woodlogger. Very thorough video explaining the steps and materials to build a simple, BUT, effective garden box. Here at my big box garden center, there is a 4x6 box, assembled for $250.00. This project will be way below $100.00 and meet all our garden needs, so definitely the way to go on a budget using a simple home saw and screws. Keep the videos coming.

Nice video. My wife would like some of those beds, You're right, the 2x4 sizes can really confuse people. Construction studs are usually 1.5x3.5, but rough sawn 2x4s can be bigger. Also watch out for those 2x3's and 92" studs too. lol

+WoodLogger I think timber millers cut timber to the nominal size as rough sawn. Once this timber is run through a planer to smooth it, the finished size will be slightly smaller.

they are actually 92" 5/8 inches called Pre-Cut studs and this is to create an 8'1"1/8 tall standard wall before flooring and sheet rock. Its estimated that after the 7/16 sheet rock and roughly 5/8 - 3/4 of flooring you get a true 8ft ceiling height. Same for 9 and 10 ft ceilings anything else is considered just a 2x4. Although you dont see them in 1" /34 x 3" 3/4 its always 1" 1/2 x 3" 1/2

Its based on ruff cut lumber vs milled lumber. Rough cut is truly 2x4 but burly and has lots of rough edges. So they plain down the edges taking roughly a 1/4 inch per side to smooth and straighten them out.

that article is perhaps 15 years out of date. My reading has shown that CCA (arsenic laced) was banned in 2003. Modern PT lumber has no arsenic and more copper ( ACQ, MCA etc) and it can leach into soil but by a few inches and levels are so low that risk to humans from exposure to copper is tiny.

I find that attaching the corners and center support blocks OUTSIDE allows for smoother work with Garden Tools - no obstacles to stop the flow !!!! I have also experimented with stapling 2 layers of Black porous Ground Cover material around the inner sides ---- this helps to reduce rotting of the Wood considerably.

I noticed the weed barrier only on the bottom, however, have you had any issues with leakage between the boards on a rainy day with muddy water? I have been researching a lot because I want to make some of these for this growing season, and I have read where some people line the entire inside (going up the sides) of the box with landscape cloth. Just wondered if you think that would be a good idea since you've had yours for some time now, or if you never ran into the leakage problem. Thanks, and great job!

Great video. Any suggestions for a similar design? I am making the sameType but over concrete. I would like to raise it off the ground y maybe 2 feet. I see other designs where they dont use a bottom but add chickenwire and then the weed barrier. I am worried this will mot be strong enough to hold all the dirt. Any suggestions? Thanks for the video really well done.

The wood mill cuts the lumber on a rough cut blade. After the are done, they send the wood, through a planer. This way, you will have a nice cut of finished wood. So, what they do is cut 1/4 of an inch on all sides. If you prefer raw and plane it your self. (GOOD LUCK) Have you taken notice to the sharp edges of the wood, very smooth also

2 by 4 is actually 1.5 x 3.5 inches not 1.75 x 3.75 as you mentioned. They are milled down from actual 2 x 4 (smoothed out basically). You can still buy actual 2x4 lumber from mills, just ask for rough cut, it's usually closer or just over 2x4.

yes, cut from the tree as a 2X4. Then it gets planed smooth. The drying causes it to shrink as well. If you do a fine measure of many pieces, you'll find they are about 1.5" thick but not all exactly the same size.

You should mention to people that pine wood is not the best choice to making these raised garden beds, as pine wood will deteriorate much faster with the natural elements at play. One of the best choices to use for wood for making these raised garden beds is cedar. Cedar is very resistant to many of the natural elements, and you will gain more use out of your raised garden bed. Overall, good job in making and instructing the how-to video. I got homework now, :D

@relsiswb
@relsiswb 8 жыл бұрын
+Look Inside That's not plastic. He used a fabric weed barrier. It block weeds from coming through. Plastic would stop water from filtering into the ground and your plants would be waterlogged. I'm not sure a weed barrier is necessary. Another reason not to put a weed barrier is that it also blocks your plant roots from reaching deep into the soil. For instance, tomato roots will go probably 6 feet into the soil to draw water. They will be more drought resistant.
