How to make a Rectangle Amish knot (toothbrush) rag rug - tutorial

I have finally got around to creating this tutorial for the rectangle Amish knot rug!
Huge apologies for the blurriness in parts of the video. Annoyingly, I hadn’t realised until I'd finished filming everything and I wasn't about to do it all over again! :)
I hope it doesn’t spoil your learning.
For a small rug of approx 14x34inches, you'll need a double duvet cover cut into approx 2in strips.

I love your explanations. And yes you do make sense. I started a rectangle but I am going back and forth and it took me the first three rows to figure out how to keep it square. But I'm not going in a circular motion ,I'm simply going back and forth. Plus I am trying to make mine 5x4 feet. The way you are doing it here I literally can do a different type of pattern with my material. I love it. I'm so glad I found you

I have been rugging with this knot method for almost a year because I found your videos. Have become comfortable enough now so I've been playing with the warp (spine) a little by using fabric twine instead of fabric strips... makes for a heavier and stiffer rug. Thanks for your videos👍

that is awesome! One thing I saw in another video, was pinning your work down as you go, onto a cork board, or something similar. It keeps the rug from turning, and bunching up as you go around. So glad I found your videos - you seem to be the only one on KZbin that explains them in a way I can grasp. They are so fun to make! One question - how do you keep the rug from turning into a "bowl" shape? I think my knots may be too tight on the spine? Trying to stretch it a bit so it will lay flat. Hi Lauren, it could be that you're pulling a bit too tight on the 'spine', which is often the case or possibly you're adding too many knots at the corners. You shouldn't need to add knots along the sides. Watch again from 15mins and again at 21min 55secs It's also best to work on a flat surface and manipulate the rug into shape as you go along. It's not very easy to correct, so sometimes it's best to just start again, or go with the flow and turn it into a cute basket. All the best 😊

oh no! Sorry to hear your rugs are going cup shaped. It could be that you're pulling a bit too tight on the 'spine' possibly at the corners. Make sure to make your rug on a flat surface and check its flatness regularly, after every round. Make sure to not pull at the spine. Keep manipulating the rug into shape often. You may not be able to fix this rug, but I hope you have a better result with your next rug ☺️ 💫Also, glad that you like my guided meditations 🙏🏾

I've been watching lots of how to videos to make rag rugs and yours is by far the easiest to follow. Your very calm instructions make it so easy to follow, plus your humour, re "ripping the strips" .. ha ha ....thank you so very much. Also, I have 2 questions: is the "spine" needed throughout the rug, or only on the first 2 rounds? Does this process work for using other fabrics (shirts, tshirts, etc.) Again, thank you.

Hi, thank you and sorry for delay in responding. Yes, the spine is needed throughout the whole make. Most fabric can be used to make your rug. Use fabric that's previously been washed. When using stretchy fabric, be mindful to not stretch the fabric as you create your knots. Make sure to make your rug on a flat surface and manipulate into shape often. Enjoy making your rug 😊

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I want to make some kind of rag rug for my reading nook and have been researching methods. I think this is my favorite so far. Looking at it, it looks like one could theoretically do this without a needle, but it would just be more work; is that right? Edit because I just realized after commenting that this sounds crazy since you can use a safety pin or a paper clip; I have a hard time using small tools due to health reasons

Not crazy at all. Try out different ways - fingers, safety pin, paperclip, bodkin needle... One way might feel easier than another, but always go with whatever feels most comfortable for you and enjoy making your rug 😊

To be totally honest, I don't know 😅 I just guesstimated it. I think I told myself that the spine was going to be about half the length of the rug, but I don't think it matters too much because you can just keep going and going with this rug... I think the longer the spine, the more rectangular it will be. But please don't quote me on that 😁 Enjoy making your rug 😊

Love this! I made my first rug from your other tutorial on round rugs...however...it being my first I've realizes I pulled the (spine) piece too tight all the way around so I essentially have a beautiful rug that doesn't sit flat. Hi Alyshia, so sorry. I don't know how I missed your message. I hope you were able to still use your first rug. If it was already completed, i'm not sure that it's fixable. Sometimes they do sit flat when in use, if there's a nonslip mat underneath. Hope any future mats turns out how you want it 😊

Thank you. I won't be making another tutorial for this rug, I can only suggest watching on a large screen. I focus on the corners throughout, especially from 12min 50 sec to approximately 20min with very clear instructions. Good luck making your rug 😊

Have you ever tried a dowl rod with a pointed end and the other end has been drilled enough for the fabric or to fold the fabric? I found it to be helpful so i do not over tighten the knots. It seems to work for me on a couple of rugs. Do you like the contrast or is it for your show?

Hi Angela, no, I've only ever used wire to make my needle. It's also lovely to find different ways to create your needle. I'd added the purple to the red, as I had run out of the red fabric and it was all I had. Plus I also liked how the colours complimented each other 😊 Happy New Year!

hi, sort of, but not necessarily. I think it's more about how you manipulate the corners. I really pulled at the corners to help create squarer edges. Every time I complete a corner I tug it into the shape I want and might slacken/tighten the knot. (ramble ramble) Hope that makes some sense 😁

The red rug looks like it has a triangle working away from the center on the ends. The rug created in the video, and similar to what I have created just looks like a squared off oval. Was something done differently with the red rug?

Hi, the triangular shape happened because I forced the corners into shape and it's the hole where I'd put the three knots. After creating the three corner knots, I would manipulate the rug into shape, which helped to keep it squared. The triangle effect was unintentional😊

As much as that is therapeutic to take out anger when ripping the material... I wouldn’t suggest doing so, the energy we put out is actually absorbed into the items that we make, make it with love, make it with peace in your heart, save that anger for a good exfoliation and a bath/shower. Wash it down the drain. When anger when has your meal ever been cooked perfectly... 🤔 doesn’t work.

MzClementine I appreciate your comment. I do however make my rugs, and everything else I create, with love and peace in my heart! What I do actually find is after a couple of rips of the fabric, there is a sense of release, which then turns into enjoyment and a lot of fun. I do this in my Adult & Child rug making classes. I have found that it is a positive way for them to release any anger or stress, with an almost immediate result. It is very therapeutic and once all the fabric is ripped there is only happiness and a wonderful sense of achievement when the rug is completed.

I am also a ripper 😄 Never thought about it being an action to release anything except maybe releasing the fabric, setting it free, in order to change form and become a different beautiful thing 😉 BTW I loved the video. Thank you! ❤
