DIY: How to make a cold air intake and add power!!!!

You would be better off attaching the cone filter to the standard intake, and placing the flexible ducting such that it feeds cold air from outside of the engine bay onto the cone filter. To further make sure you're filter isn't intaking much hot air from the engine, a heat shield could be placed between the filter and engine.

All i did with mine was removed the old air box. Then got an elbow tube with the cone filter and just connected directly to the factory intake tube. It doesnt seem to do much but it seems slightly more responsive.

The more tubing you add to something the more resistance specially with those ribbed pipes. The less bends in the setup the better.
@onlinepartspro7512

I'm twin turboing my car and this stuff is just the only solution for my situation. It seams like it's no worse than the stock corrugated tubing on cars. Also when you have a super tight engine bay it would take so many bends to get to the stock location that you'd spend $500 in piping and couplers and clamps. My intake consists of two of these flex pipes from each turbo to two cone filters in the stock location with the maf right before the throttle body. Super simple. Using intercooler piping would probably look better and get better power but on a turbo car it's just not as important.

People shit on flexy intake piping BUT, intake piping doesn't get got in NA cars, and generally save a lot of money, they won't break, they are easy to maneuver around the engine bay ect. They are actually quite good for daily driving cars. For anything to hardcore though they tend to suck inward with hardcore intake setups. But most the time they are fine

On modern cars, like yours & mine, we both probably have something like a PCV valve that goes into the side of the air filter housing & then an IAT sensor (intake air temp sensor) that usually goes into the side of the stock tubing just before the resonator (that is usually between your tubing & the actual intake entrance). How do you deal with that with this type of custom system you're showing us here? My 06 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4.7 has the IAT sensor & PCV hook-up in the 2 locations I mentioned above. Any tips would be helpful as I am looking to either buy an Injen CAI set-up which are really nice & they work great or I'll make my own custom CAI, sort of like what you made here but with aluminum tubing instead.
@brandonb2320
@brandonb2320 7 жыл бұрын
i think you mean MAF not pcv. the PCV is on the engine itself and is for oil
@Mike-wo2dk
@Mike-wo2dk 7 жыл бұрын
The PCV on stock cars is designed to recirculate the oil vapour back into the engine to be burnt with the fuel. This means that there needs to be an inlet between the filter and ports/tubine. You shouldn't have to interfere with it to change the filter. Dont know much about intake temp sensors, mine doesn't have one. You forgot the brake booster line but that's further down and after the turbine on forced induction engines so you don't have to fiddle with it.

The only differences that i noticed with the cold air intake on were reduced low to mid range power but anything about 4k it fast noticeably faster. Throttle response was also improved along with a nice noise from the filter

Should have used a thicker hose or rubber for better insulation or used exhaust wrap to keep the heat from melting that flimsy plastic tube. also making the airflow longer from the engine will make it grasp for more air which isnt good.

Anthony Macneil not really. While its a bad idea for other reasons, that tube stretches out long enough to stuff that filter down behind the bumper cover where air is always rushing in while driving. The chances of it pulling the heat from the engine bay down there instead of pulling the air thats constantly passing by is very slim

@brianneal9204
@brianneal9204 6 жыл бұрын
Ok, This is all wrong and probably decreased horsepower. First, the flex tube has wavy walls. This disrupts air flow and causes friction, which decreases the air flow. See any video or article porting and polishing or look at a real cold air intake. The smooth walls allow for free air flow, hence more air flowing to the intake. Second, cheap filters tend to be more restrictive as they use cheap heavy paper. Check the CFM rating of your filters. If they are not greater than your stock filter, this is all for not. Lastly, you just stuck that filter down into the engine bay where it will suck in hot air from the engine heat. Like most after market intakes, this should be isolated from the engine bay air. optimal location would be somewhere in front of the radiator support or fender if it can be protected from elements, but allow air to flow freely. Save your money and do not do your cold air intake like this. You are better of using PVC or exhaust piping and run it out of the engine bay. Look at inter-coolers as a good example of what you should do.

Not a true cold air intake.....silly word anyway...air will only be as cold as air temp outside. You are still sucking in hot engine air....so...??? The air box is there for a reason...to keep engine compartment air out of your intake!!! Without air box you will probably hear a whistle sound. Get it to low and every puddle you drive thru.....well, hope you don’t suck water up in there?? Just spend the money and do it right or leave it alone. Probably only add 1HP 🤔

I also typed the original comment before you pushed the filter down into the bottom of the engine compartment and it fell apart so it did indeed happen to you lol you should never tighten a hose clamp onto a rubber composite material and a flex pipe with no stiffner. On top of that the accordion style walls is going to create turbulence which will slow airflow and lower cfms. This is why you get a smooth plastic pipe kit with a real cai to eliminate the factory bellows. When you make a video telling people how to do things you set up for constructive criticism. Im sorry you dont like what I habe to say but its all factual I assure you
