Your Dad "recreated" the first "homemade" cold air intake I ever saw on a street legal vehicle back in the 1980s. By the way, our immediate neighbor just gave his youngest son his bone stock Ford-Mazda Ranger "step side" pickup with just over 500,000 miles on the clock. Yes, you read correctly, just over 500,000 miles. The engine and transmission (five speed manual) were original to the truck with only the clutch and throw out bearing having been replaced at about 250,000 miles. Otherwise, our neighbor only did basic maintenance (oil, hoses, belts, tires, etc.) to the truck he purchased new from a local dealer. Enjoyed the video as usual! Keep the great entertaining and informative videos coming! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and yours!!!

If you have a MAP instead of a MAF, a CAI can potentially do a lot more than improve the sound. (For example my 2017 Ford Fiesta SE 1.6, which was designed to only use a MAP.)

I bought a cheap “cold air kit” for my 4 cylinder Mazda pickup, same thing as a Ranger. It actually did improve my power because the factory intake is really restrictive, until summer came and it got really hot in the engine compartment. That cheap kit didn’t come with anything to isolate the filter from the engine heat. so I built a insulated box for it by screwing a bunch of old license plates into the original mounting bracket for the old air box and just bent and screwed them together until I had the general shape I needed. Then I glued a bunch of black packing foam on the inside and outside of the box and across the top where it more or less seals to the bottom of the hood. It actually looks pretty good. Now it pulls air from behind the headlight and the factory hole in the inner fender. The pipe going to the throttle body was considerably cooler to the touch. It made a big difference in my power during the 100 degree SE Texas summer this year. I bet it would be even better if I wrapped the pipe in header tape between the box and the throttle.

8:40 Snoozel lol perfect! Mine in my 4.7 Dakota didnt route like yours did, it turned 80 degrees and pointed into the inner fender, so yeah, I 3D printed my own Snoozel to pull straight from the front grill, like yours, while still using the stock system and drop in K&N.

I have a 2006 Toyota Matrix XR. I custom built a CAI for it and long story short after 3 tries it still threw a CEL light (ran lean). After reading SEVERAL diff Toyota forums I finally found one where a guy said that and the 2007 will always run lean adding a CAI but SRs work. I didn’t want a SR because they defeat the purpose of getting colder air inside the engine. Ran across another forum the other day where a guy said Fugita and Ingen Technology made a CAI that will not trigger a CEL light. I went with Injen and so far so good. It was very pricey but worth it being tuned without having to get a tune. I recommend Injen Tech’s CAIs to ANYONE! Oh by the way y’all, don’t expect to gain horsepower on a natural aspirated engine, all you are gonna gain is sound UNLESS you have a turbo and even then the gains are marginal (you’ll never gain what these companies claim!) Don’t believe me on that last comment, have your vehicle ran on a dyno before and after (gonna cost you some duckies!) and you’ll be kicking yourself in the arse with a thought of I told ya so

What people don't realize is how detrimental they can be. Best example besides sensors left put would be the big ugly bellows or chambers built into the sides of the tubing. Especially in older cars, taking them off can hurt performance. But it does sound good.

I am from San Diego CA and recently recharge my spectre filter on my f150 since it was pretty much a dust ball and went to a long road trip, added to the fuel tank a redline injector cleaner and did the numbers for my mpgs and it really helped. I honestly don't know how I feel about cold air intakes but I do like them. I guess my suggestion is that if you don't have the money it's really not necessary.
@bobvedder2451

I had a F350 that had the air coming in from the right fender. I put on a cold air intake and thinking of where it was getting air, didn't have my filter feeding directly from the right fender. When you drive in snowy and freezing rain etc. All of the freezing crapola get adhered to your air filter. I now drive a gladiator with a drop in k&n filter, leaving the existing cold air filter working.

the Number 1 test that you can do is this: make sure the air outside is calm and clear. remove your air filter, take the car for a Very Brief, quick drive. if you feel a significant difference in performance then it’s worthwhile to upgrade your intake system. else, forget about it.

I like K&N or Iceman if I don’t build it myself. I make a plate like K&N uses to help keep engine heat from the filter. I also wrap the tubes with header wrap to help them from getting hot and creating an oven effect to the air going through the tube. But, with using a DRB to check the temperature readings in the intake. It shows a lower temperature than it was with the stock box. Oh, I also put pre-filters on my filters to help keep them cleaner longer. I’ll try to send you a picture of one of mine.

Na man, almost all factory intakes are horrible, and a cold air intake is going to increase horsepower by 5 to 10%, if and only if you fabricate it in a way that fresh flowing air is getting to it. If not you're looking about the same hp maybe a little less. The difference is this fist off CAI are for the enthusiasts, automobile manufacturers rarely cater to the enthusiast. The stock intake system usually has a resonator and they're going for quiet. But the reason why you get a five to ten per-cent horsepower gain from a cold air intake is there's a suction and a vacuum, nothing more than a pipe with a filter, most stock intake systems are like a straw with holes in it. Its design like that on purpose in case you drive through a big puddle, water doesn't get sucked up into the engine. And some cars are extremely easy to install a good CIA because they have a lot of room under the hood, you just open up the front grill a little bit, and slap a cone filter right in the middle of it where the air is coming through, instant hp gain. But other vehicles the engine compartment is so cramped it's hard to get air flow without doing more severe alterations.

You should check the manufacturer compatibility of the cold air system with your make and model. For example, ECS Tuning has one for my VW Atlas which is a complete system that accommodates the OEM mass air flow system. There are many other options and they all have different benefits and admittedly the gains are somewhat limited but they do increase HP from 5-15 and some torque. Anyway, it’s not optimal to simply plug and play any cold air intake into a vehicle given modern technology and tuning systems.

Either this video is wrong or the one vehicle I did install cold air intake on is the one and only that it made a huge difference but I have a 4.7 ho Jeep wj and it woke that thing up like no other! Before when I would mash the gas it would slowly start going and once it started moving it was pretty quick but after this cold air intake when I hit that gas it's instantly power and it doesn't slowly go. It honestly feels like I got 50 horsepower to this thing

better to just connect a small hose to your inside ac cabin vents to suck REAL cold air into your engine air intake into the air filter box. For a TRUE COLD air intake system...atleast if your AC works and you have your ac on. just have to have a electronic cut off if you have the heat on in the vehicle.

I know my shitbox certainly doesn't have a "well designed" "well engineered" air intake Bcoz the filterbox sits on top of the gearbox and the gearbox , throttle body near the firewall, exhaust headers near the radiator fan and the intake piping just stops on the valve cover Yes there are some acoustic chamber to reduce the intake noise m, but the car is technically sucking in hot air all of the time, bcoz the fan draw air from outside cooling down radiatorn and condenser then the already hot air blows on the exhaust manifold and heating it ups even more then since my stock intake pipes stops on top of the valve cover, so the iat constantly stay above 40~60+°C or 104~140+°F
