In this video you will learn how to make a rigid scratchboard/scraperboard (comparable to Ampersand's style) with a homemade gesso out of cheap and easy to find materials. If you have a bit more patience than I did in the sanding stage, your scratchboard will be more even in texture.

I tried this compound several years ago. It was difficult to apply and to get an even coat. Instead I used a commercial gesso from the art store and sanded between coats. I used a roller brush, sponge roller I think. The smoother your white layer the easier it will be to scratch. Then I used a small pump spray bottle (cosmetic section of the dollar store) and sprayed the ink on to get an even coat. I mostly used an Exacto #11 blade to scratch.

There is a good scraperboard available which is Essdee British Scraperbaord and these are the best I am aware of. They sold in many places online as well as some stores. They are a bit pricey. I am glad for this video as I wanted to make my own on masonite. You can make un-inked and draw pen and ink on them which allows you to scrape away what you don't need. (try doing that on plain paper!) Then paint strategic areas with ink and scrape white lines and shapes on them as well. Very versatile. By the way there are harder gypsum plasters out there. Go to Lowes or Home Depot etc. and buy Durabond plaster joint compound in the drywall supply section- typically Labeled Durabond 90 for slower setting and Durabond 45 for faster setting. Take note, it spreads and sticks very well with no bonding agaent needed but does NOT sand easily because it is so hard. It costs about $18 for 25 lbs. You could mass produce a lot of panels with that. They also sell Durabond Easysand which is very soft. A blend would give you just what you need.

Not that most would care, but Elmer's glue is not PH neutral, which means the end result is not of archival quality. If you're creating professional level work, it might make a difference.

I bought some rabbit skin glue in anticipation of making some kaolin based boards, but your approach seems simpler. Do you know if your way is just as archival as other methods? I want to make sure it is high quality and last forever, essentially. Also, do you know if you can buy a quality pre-made gypsom based gesso (or kaolin) to simplify the DIY process? Thanks, great video!

I do not know if my method is as long lasting as an RSG-Kaolin-Pigment gesso, but it seems to have held up well this long. I am sure you can buy such gessos pre-made, but they are going to be expensive. Gypsum is hygroscopic, so that is a little worrying. The PVA will last quite a while, and is more ethical than hide glues, but only time will tell.

This is an old tutorial, find my moon mink video. It requires considerable force to scratch, if this is not ok I recommend applying the ink with an airbrush instead
