You can make a gessoed panel from scratch and sand it smooth, but I have NO IDEA how they make clayboard.

What black ink did you use? I used speedball ultra black and the finish was glossy, which i didn't like. Yours looks matte... wondering the brand? Thanks!

Higgins Black Magic.

@@cinderblockstudios the Higgins works ok but still has glossiness. I added property acrylic gesso primer and it came out much better. If you don’t care to colorize, Windsor & newton India ink works well, but it is not waterproof. I am finding golden SoFlat matte black works nice and even better if you add a bit of the proart gesso.

India ink and drawing black ink is same item.

Not necessarily. There are calligraphy inks, acrylic inks, and Sumi inks. Some inks are dye based and others are pigment based. It's important to specific when you can to be sure that the result is the same for other artists.
