Sometimes I think I know more than most regarding cameras and custom lens manufacture, and then this MF comes out of the depths to put me in my place lol incredible stuff, man! This deserves so many more views, but I think the target demographic for this kind of advanced content is unfortunately small. However I feel it is growing now that anamorphic is becoming more affordable and popular! Really cool! I know it's probably a massive undertaking making a video to explain your design process, but even a less in-depth video where you touch on some of the high level concepts that went into the design would be invaluable. For example - a video about how you calculated the gear ratio (I'm not even sure if that's the correct term) to normalize the focus movements between the two lenses would be hugely helpful for anyone thinking of attempting a similar design.

I like your work a lot, keep at it. I often wondered if there is a cheap way to convert vintage anamorphic lenses for todays needs.
@noth606
@noth606 Жыл бұрын
mmwuh? How do you mean convert, and what kind if lenses do you mean? I mean, if you have an actual anamorphic lens there should be some lens adaptor or such to get it stuck to the front of the camera in a way that's aligned more or less enough whip the photons where they need to go... You'll have to desqueeze the image probably but there are tools for that. So, point being if you have a something anamorphic that attaches to something and does the thing you want, but you want it to attach to something else, it shouldn't be that hard 🙂 Worst case you can sub a proper adapter for an improper one that eyeball measure puts at "about right", a dremel with some bits, electrical tape and a case of beer, put them in a big shaker, drink the beer, shake it shake it - when you wake up you'll have an engineering marvel the likes of which mankind has yet to see. Alternatively, give me the scoop on the lens(es) you mean and I'll give it a shake and let you know 🙂

your a genius! the only downside of this compared to a cine lens OR also to usage of a variable diopter is the movement of the internal lenses. the image moves alot while focusing. (not shanking. in denpth) but thanks to you, i realize it now before i play and print arround for ages :)
@outsideworlds
@outsideworlds 3 жыл бұрын
I posted another video with better test footage in my channel and you can decide yourself whether it's usable for focus pulls or not. If you're curious, the main pros and cons I've experienced vs. a variable diopter. Pro: - Cost - Not adding yet more glass which affects immage quality and flaring Cons: - The focus is stiffer than I'd like - Stretch shifts from infinity to close focus (about 2x - 1.8x, can be fixed in post) - The gears make some noise which might be a problem for quiet scenes

@outsideworlds

For EF you would need some machined metal parts. For this design I'm using the m42->E-mount adapter as a base to which I attach everything else. Because the flange focal distance of m42 and EF is so close, the adapter is very thin and there's nothing to attach to.

Interesting project, but I think it is only advisable for wide angle adapters such as Kowa H, and Sankor Type 5e for the rest it is better to invest in FM.
@outsideworlds
@outsideworlds 3 жыл бұрын
I had to google to figure out that FM stood for focus module. I did it this way for 2 reasons, 1, I liked the look of my adapter and I didn't want to add yet more glass in front of it and 2. the cost. I was really just doing this for fun and trying to spend as little money as possible. Any variable diopters I looked at, even the DIY one recommended by Anamorphic on a Budget would have cost more than everything else in this project.
@creative_camera_lens
@creative_camera_lens 3 жыл бұрын
@@outsideworlds I understood you. If you make a version for Kowa H and several popular cameras without losing the viewing angle of the anamorphic, open gate such as GH5 and Z cam, and the standard S35, I think this project can be printed on order, it will be really profitable for the buyer, and you will earn money ... Because big FM is expensive.
@outsideworlds
@outsideworlds 3 жыл бұрын
@@creative_camera_lens LOL, I had to google again to figure out what the Kowa 16h is :-) I tested my adapter with different lenses and the widest I could go was a 35mm lens on a S35 sensor. It should work with the Sankor, but you'll probably have to make some adjustments: you'd have to adjust the gear ring which attaches to the focus ring of the sankor, you'd have to change the clamp to fit it and you'd probably have to change the gear box. Basically you measure the angle of the focus throw of the anamorphic adapter from infinity to 1.5 meters, divide it by the focus throw of the helios and you have your target gear ratio. If you reply with those measurements, I'll adjust the model on thingyverse.

@@outsideworlds So I looked into your adapter, Films Incorporated appears to actually be Sankor, they sold under that name for a while from what I can tell. But there are a ton of minor variations on the 16C, which makes it tricky to find an exact match. I looked up my mount adapter but realized it's a no-name generic I got as part of a Helios 44-2 I ordered from RetroFotoHouse. I can't find an exact match, but I do see some similar ones. I'd say I should probably choose one of the common ones on Amazon that anyone can get by brand name so that others can apply this work. I'm going to see which ones are sold in both the USA and EU and get back to you on that. EDIT: I did a quick look and the one I saw that was in both was the K&F Concept adapter. It's not a cheap one unfortunately but it gets great reviews. How it change a focal length after anamorphic de squeeze? Does It work in full frame mode or only in APS-C, Super 35mm, 16mm or Super 16mm mode?
@outsideworlds
@outsideworlds 3 жыл бұрын
The tests at the end were all done with a full frame camera. There's a slight vignette, but I like it. Calculating the focal length is complicated. The taking lens is 58mm and there seems to be some vertical squeeze as well as horizontal, so vertically it's something like 50-55mm equivalent and horizontally, if you're cropping to 2.4:1, then it's 58 * (2.4 / ((16/9)*2)) = 39mm. Yay, math is fun :-)

@@outsideworlds Hello. I meant the same devices that you have given the link to. Where can I buy these? And that I want to make it for the Canon EF mount. Do I still need the same nex adapter? Thank you
@outsideworlds
@outsideworlds Жыл бұрын
@@NikeKalisand all the parts are 3D printed, so if you don't have a 3D printer you would need to find a print service or a friend with a 3D printer. All the other parts (screws, ball bearings, steel balls) I think I ordered off of Amazon. I'm located in Germany, so my Amazon links probably won't help you much. It should be possible to adapt this design to EF mount. You will need to adjust some of the 3D part files, or find someone who's able to do so. I don't have a camera with an EF mount, so unfortunately I can't help you much there.

How does the single focus work? Does the anamorphic adapter move acordingly back and forward so the focus is corect? Thank you!

The anamorphic adapter has it's own focus wheel, just like the taking lens. I've added gears which translate the rotation of the main focus gear to match the throw and direction of both the anamorphic adapter and the taking lens.

I found the adapter in a cardboard box in the corner of a used electronics store, but you can usually find several on eBay for wildly different prices and if you're patient it's possible to get good deals. I'd recommend checking out the KZbin channel Anamorphic on a Budget which has a lot more information about the different adapters out there.

whats the size of your m42 to sony E dummy adaptor? This could work with anything im wanting to get it onto a canon but yeah just not sure the dummy adaptors would be exactly the same dimensions and want to check
@outsideworlds
@outsideworlds 3 жыл бұрын
E-mount has a flange focal distance of 18mm and m42 is 45.46mm, so I guess the adapter's about 32mm long? m42 to canon EF adapter's exist, but they're very thin, so you'd have to change my design to make it work. I have everything mounted to the adapter, but it would also be possible to clamp on to the lens itself.

It just says Films Incorperated on it and so far I haven't been able to find out anything else about it. If you go on eBay you'll find a bunch of these adapters for wildly different prices.
