These are the sort of episodes that got me into car throttle and what kept me, glad to see a return to form. I am also impressed that the V70 wasn't that much slower given it has 250k more miles, shagged tyres and aged suspension setup for comfort rather than the Skoda's which is setup for track times

I am over the moon seeing this as a recent owner (2 months ago) of a D5 V70 54 plate manual. Love the old horse, 200k miles on it and cost me a grand. Got the 54 because its the last one without a DPF, which has been the bane of my life for the past 5 years in all of my modern diesels.

The interior has aged quite nicely, they're well specced (mine has parking sensors, Auto headlights and folding mirrors) and reminds me of my Saab 93 with the instruments tilted more towards you. I have a same volvo d5 120kw, but damn, i have it tuned to 160kw and its a diesel monster! And that pure 5-cyl sound🤤 Mine doesnt have any suspension upgrades but it takes corners really well without leaning, like its impressive for a wagon, this one is just shot dead probably😂

In stock form these Volvos are sleepers and out preform their numbers on paper: 850R, V70R, S60R, T6 3.0L XC70, C30 T5 R-Design, C30 Polestar (only 250 made), 2015 V60 T6 Polestar (si6 engine), the Polestar 1 and 2. Any volvo with T5 or T6 engine (actual 5 and 6 cylinder engines not new 4 cylinder engines) are capable of huge power gains with modest ECM tuning/reflashes that can give a proper sports car a run for their money.

@@firewaffle1 I’ve calculated that. The Octavia vRS fuel tank is 52l or 11.4 UK gallons and from London to Paris is around 575 miles, so that means averaging 50.4mpg. Škoda says that this car will do 50.4mpg and that it’s possible to make it back.

It's probably not that draggy with the lack of a boot lid. The air entering through the door openings can go straight out the back

@@craig855s you'd be surprised how much drag it could possibly cause. Have you ever noticed that hatchbacks (and estates are hatchbacks) all need a rear wiper? That's to do with the (not sure of the technical term, but I'm gonna go with) vortices causing spray to be flung up. Now, I may not be totally accurate, but someone else can maybe drop a science bomb in here. Having said that, Volvos aren't exactly renowned for being aerodynamic TBF. The aero of a brick!

@@LiamNI Yes i understand that a flat backed car causes drag because there is a low pressure area behind the car, but as this car is essentially hollow then it's not going to suffer with this issue. Yes fitting actual body panels that weigh absolutely nothing would be better than leaving huge gaps, but thats gonna be prohibitively expensive (the tailgate on a volvo V70 is already made of GRP rather than metal in order to save weight)

The 850 BTCC estate basically did the same thing and an engine upgrade. They stripped the interior and anything that wasn't mandatory according to regulations. Bodywork etc. did stay. Their thinking was that the wagon form would help with aero and also a few other regulation tomfoolery things, as was the norm back then.
