@jimmetan70312 жыл бұрын
RJ The Bike Guy, I made the star nut tool that you showed in this post. This is the first time I made a tool and success drove the star nut into my new front suspension fork. I am so happy because I could not get the bike repairer to do it. He said that he did not have the special tool. I think he does not want to do it. What a lousy repairer. Thank You.
@richardgilbert53393 ай бұрын
The three main bike shops in Aberdeen Scotland will fit this for free, even though you didn't buy the starnut from them. Any good LBS should do that ! Should is the operative word here
@Babychickhands2 күн бұрын
11mm long socket works a treat, I installed a new fox fork a month ago using your tip, yesturday cut a steerer off a used bike I recently bought, cut 20mm and used the 11mm long socket again to drive down the star nut by 20mm. Thank you.

Dude you just saved my bacon! I bought everything I needed to fit a new fork for the 1st time so imagine the tools I bought and I’d forgotten the star nut setter so this video really is good. Thumbs up and a subscription from me 👍🏻 keep it up man, really good video

very helpful explanation and method. i like the way you started with the park tool so the concept of how it has to work is perfectly clear, then applied that to your method. this enables the viewer to either follow your method with confidence, or come up with his own method. much better than videos that may show elegant solutions but skip over the concept

I'm new to bicycles and I just found your channel and you saved me so much money. I wish I can buy you a beer or something, you are a genius when it comes to these bikes and I'm sure you're a genius when it comes to anything. Thank you so much since I'm only building one bike I would have spent so much money on tools. But my bike is coming out flawless thanks your videos. This channel is so underrated hope you get more traction. Thanks again RJ.

New sub here :) and first and for most, great job on your projects. Very clear spoken and thorough with your information, and you make each step easy to understand. You have become my go-to on how to repair bikes, and/or even rebuild old frames to give them new life. You sir, have ignited an old flare on mine, respect.
@Ronald-qj5nx3 күн бұрын
Many people do not have a bench vice to securely hold the fork when trying to hammer in the star nut into the steerer tube. If you just place the fork legs on the ground and hammer at the other end, the fork will absorb the hammer blows thus making it difficult for the star nut to be forced into the steerer tube, especially if it is a MTB suspension fork, even more so if the wheel and tyre are fitted. Use a piece of timber between the fork crown and the floor so that the fork legs are suspended in the air and unable to absorb any of the hammer blows.

This inspired me to try bolting the starnut onto an old socket to fit just inside the fork tub so the guide is on the inside (no big sockets I'm afraid), with a plastic sleeve on the outside of the fork tube (old paint roller handle) and a socket driver inside the plastic to drift the nut in. It went a bit off direction so I used an old bolt to bang it sideways occasionally to get it back on line so I didn't mess up the good bolt. Mission accomplished - Thanks RJ.

well this a nice practical / technical video in installing a new star nuts using the 11mm and 21mm sockets, i have a set of metric sockets and i will use one of the socket for installing the the star nuts very soon at a depth of 13-15mm from the tip of the steerer tube, thanks a lot for the video..

Just got to this stage on my new forks today. Thanks for saving me the time trying to work out a cheap hack!!!!! The 48 ( at present ) thumbs down will be from agents of Park Tools, who make great products, but are so over-priced.😆😜

This is great in combination with your headset remover tool video. For almost no money you can have all the tools you need to do some pretty advanced bike service. With both of those videos I’m saving $80 on the park tool RT-1 and RT-2 and $25 on the star nut setter. Plus my headset cup remove looks real slick in copper

Great video, got some new pikes to fit tomorrow so I don't want to ruin them but also don't see the point in spending all that money on a tool to only use it once. The second one you made looks good as it ensures the star nut is set straight because the bottom of the socket butts up against the top of the steerer tube

Wanted to thank you for this video RJ! Yet again, you've provided content that helped me fix an issue. This time, my mid-90s Trek 7000 had some vibrations up front. I loosened the stem bolts and began cranking on the stem bolt to re-seat the fork into the bearings. It just kept spinning and spinning, which I knew wasn't right. I took off the stem and the expander nut had nearly completely pulled out of the fork tube. So, I pulled it out, bought a new one, and within 5 min of coming home it was installed. Job done. Thank you for creating such helpful content!

Thanks! Used the second method with larger socket but I didn't need to put the washer under the head inside the socket. Head of the bolt actually wedged perfectly into the 3/8 square hole on my craftsman socket. Used the same OD socket as the steerer and it ended up perfectly centered and strait.

Used this video as a guide to fit my star nut this morning, I found a 21mm spark plug socket fitted the bill exactly, the spanner flats fit inside the steerer tube and the depth of them is exactly where I wanted the depth of the star nut, I used the tap it in with a hammer method to start it off square then banged it home Brilliant how to and saved me money and a trip to the bike shop 👍

if the fork is open at the bottom you can get a piece of threaded rod that fits in the starnut, then you can put the rod through the fork and at one end you have the star nut and at one end you have a washer and a nut. tighten the nut until the star nut is settled at the correct hight. worked for me but your way is probably easier

Thanks for the informative video. As always very useful. I tried following your directions but i did something wrong because it went in crooked and had a dickens of a time trying to straighten. My question is how do you straighten one and is it ok to do so, or should I start over with a new one. Fyi... it seems to be working but want to make sure. Again thanks for the videos and any info you may have is greatly appreciated.
