Great timing... I was looking for a way to isolate part of a shirt before tie dyeing because I found this great shirt at Walmart that has “Be a nice human” embroidered on it in thin, colored thread. But the shirt is white, aka see-through, and the writing would be obliterated by tie dye. So I think I’ll fold up the writing and cover it with a lil plastic bag and fasten that with a bit of room to spare and then just scrunch up the rest and have some fun with the 3-color basic kit I picked up. I’m not aiming at anything fancy, just a wearable, more opaque shirt that keeps the cute message that made me want it in the first place! And if I do it right, it may still look like a flower shape around it.

Maybe a stupid question 🙋‍♂️ but is the curved part of the 12” substantially more than the 8”? I have a bunch of 8 inchers and am wondering if it would be ok to use all 8”. Thanks

Thank you! I measured my hemostats and the 8" ones have about 2.5" of clamping area. The 12" hemostats have 4" of clamping area. If your 8" hemostats are sturdy enough - I would definitely give them a try.

How did yours work so well dry?? I wasted so much color from it just running off:/ an running over the clamps

If your dry shirt is beading up the dye and not allowing it to soak into the shirt, you can put a little bit of soda ash water into a spray bottle and lightly mist the shirt. Then the dye should soak in just fine. I don't have that happen very often, but it does sometimes.

If I plan on doing this for a shirt that is a 5xl, do I need different sized hemostats or do you think it will still be okay? I don’t want the flower to be really small on the big shirt

You will just have to test it. It will probably work, but if you have larger hemostats, I would definitely use those. I would start by making the center of the flower larger too.

What are the tips you have on some of your hemostats?

That is heat shrink tubing. I purchase it from the electrical department at Home Depot and cover each side of my hemostats with it. It helps give a tighter hold on the shirt without allowing the teeth of the hemostats to damage the fabric.

No, not to get this look. You really need the hemostats. You can do a sunflower with just sinew, but it won't have the same look as this one.

You can. Sometimes depending on the size of the shirt, the 8 inch ones aren't large enough to clamp down on the fabric the further you go up the shirt.

@@angelakramer5757 I do - I buy heat shrink tubing from Home Depot (it can be found in the electrical department) and slide a piece of it over each side of the hemostats. Then I use a heat gun to shrink it down to fit tightly on the hemostats. If there is any excess at the end - I trim it with a pair of scissors. The heat shrink tubing comes in a variety of sizes - so I usually just purchase several different sizes and use it to fit the various size hemostats I have.

Do you leave your shirt to be dry before dye it in every video or just this one?

I dye most of my shirts when they are dry, but they don't all need to be dry. For this particular design, I prefer to dye it dry to get good saturation in the middle of the design. If it is too damp in the middle, the fibers of the shirt are already full of soda ash liquid and it won't be easy to get them to fill with dye. However, when the shirt is dry, the fibers readily soak up the dye and it is easier to tell when it is well saturated.

Yes, I soak the shirt in a soda ash (sodium carbonate) solution before I tie it. The soda ash raises the pH and allows the Procion Fiber Reactive dye that I use to properly bond with the fabric to make it permanent.
