I was eating Palt as I was watching this. I can't spell it the way Grandma pronounced it. Palt is the short name. I won't even try to spell it. My Grandma was from Sweden. She made this for us since I was a baby. It's not for everyone. It is my most favorite comfort food ever. My dad carried on the tradition after my Grandma passed. Always jokes, because Grandma always grated the potatoes by hand. We use a food processor, then a mixer. Dad says Grandma would be turning over in her grave if she knew. I can't peel a potato without thinking of her to this day. She made the best palt, with much love!

My Grandma immigrated to Canada as a child. Palt was one of the delicious Swedish meals she would make us. Often she would just make them flat and round, without the meat in the middle, knowing we liked them best the next day fried in butter. She had a food grinder she would use instead of a grater. Speaking of Swedish pancakes, I can't tell you how disappointed I was to find out the rest of the world called the crepes. Ha! And lutefisk was a favorite at Christmas. Some Palt videos on KZbin show them being made from mashed potatoes. Thanks for making them the right way. God bless your music career too.

Ok I’m going to get nerdy here since this is part of my culture. Palt is a type of Swedish potato dumpling you could say. There are different variations of potato dumplings all over central and Northern Europe. Even in Sweden there are many different variations. Different types and combinations of flour and meats. Sometimes there is no meats. Even the shape, size and name can differ in different Swedish counties, mainly in northern Sweden. Kroppkaka is also another type of Swedish potato dumpling but made from boiled potato so it’s not classified as palt. What’s unique with Palt is the use of barley flour or rye flour of different amounts, sometimes mixed with wheat flour. Especially in the county of Västerbotten where rye and barley are mixed. In the counties of Jämtland and Medelpad, the dish is traditionally not called palt but Kams.
@Lathundd2 жыл бұрын
One of my absolute favorite dishes! The day-after frying of palt is just heavenly. One thing that my mom (and grandmother before her) used to do differently to the video was to first fry the pork (and more finely chopped) in a pan with some chopped onion before making the balls. Feels like it brings out the taste even more. Also gotta say how devious of you it is to not warn about the "paltkoma" at all!

This is something I grew up on! Living in Northwestern Ontario, Canada, we have a LOT of Scandinavians here as our climate is almost identical. BEST STUFF EVER!

I ate this so many times with my Grandma, but just yesterday I found the name in Swedish and realized the origin. Jag studerar svenska nu och lär mig om min släkthistoria. We always called them potato balls. As much as I loved them freshly cooked, having them cut up and fried in the morning was one of the magical memories of my childhood. Just seeing them in the pan in the video made my day. Tack så mycket!

Ok so I made these tonight for dinner! I used bacon lardons in my palt! I probably didn’t make them as good as Tommy does! But I have to say these were really good & so tasty! I can see why they are comfort food! The sweetness of the lingonberry jam & the saltiness of the bacon is a yummy combination! I will definitely make again! Thank you for the recipe Tommy! ❤

Palt is one of my favorite dishes. You can also make "flatpalt", that is the vegetarian alternative, without salted pork or bacon, just the flour, potatoes and salt, but served with a lot of extrasalted butter.

Palt was a Christmas tradition in our family as long as I can remember here in western Canada. My great-great grandparents brought it with them when they emmigrated from the Vasterbotten region in the late 1800s. I haven't had it for years, my grandmother was the last to make it before she passed away a decade ago. I think it's time to revive the tradition. I even have some Lingonberry jam to go with it.

Potetball is a very descriptive name. We usually call it kompe in southern Norway. I've also seen many people eat it with sugar (with the salted meat in the middle and all)
@phillee28142 жыл бұрын
I wonder if "palt" is a contraction/corruption of "Potetball"? I'm always interested in the origin of words and how they move between languages, particularly as borders change over the centuries. That may come from being English, as we have had the ebb and flow of so many different cultures - Celtic->Latin->Norse/Germanic->Viking Norse->Norman French and then we picked up a few words from around the world in the days of empire, so now English is sort of a muddle of all of them. It is particularly evident in old place names, but food is another area. For example, only the rich (lords, so norman) could afford to eat pig, cow, or sheep so we use a corruption of the french for those (pork, beef and mutton) but for smaller animals, the name for the meat comes from the Angle, Saxon or Celtic root. The correct pronunciation of some placenames is so obscure that many locals don't even know them properly!
