So cool! I’m still a bonsai novice. I’ve been enjoying the art of bonsai for about 30,years…on and off! lol. I’m 61 yo. This last venture into bonsai has FINALLY made me come to the realization that I really can do this! Good only knows how many trees I’ve killed due to my impatient personality and my lack of understanding some basic tenets that are the difference between failure and success. I now want to attempt Tanuki. This video is so helpful. I’ve got my driftwood, and my juniper, and also my Dremel. Thank you for your amazing videos!

Thank you so much for that feedback! That’s wonderful. You are NEVER too old to start bonsai. I am so excited for your new adventure and I am glad that I might be able to help you along. Tanuki is pretty cool, it’s loads of fun to create them. There are several videos and even blogs on my website about the entire process so enjoy! www.bonsaitree.co.za/blogs/tree-talk/tanuki-bonsai

Do you have a video of all the tools you use for the Tanuki? If not, that would be a helpful video

If you get one thing out of this video, note the fact that you don't run the live vein up the middle. It seems so obvious now, but it hadn't crossed my mind at all. Great video.

Sometimes it’s these simple things which can be the difference between a great tree and an average tree. Thanks for watching.

Really great video. Thanks for putting it together. I have some long thin cotoneasters. Do you suppose they would work for making tanuki?
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai Жыл бұрын
Thank you! In my opinion Nicholas, no. The reason is that I don’t think there is any point of reference for a cotoneaster in nature that possesses such deadwood character. If you want to be wacky then sure, go ahead. If you want it to be believable then no. Perhaps you could rather use them and selected branches to create a raft style, that might be quite nice.

Good morning Terri, where did you get those flimsy flower pots that were on the junipers. They seem like that be easy to use and not take up a lot of space. I look forward to hearing from you.

Where I live, any garden nursery stocks them in a variety of sizes. I don’t like to use them as they are so flimsy.

Why would anyone want a tanuki? Surely it's better to learn techniques like air layering and carving and create a tree that isn't false and actually has some value.
@TerryErasmusbonsai
@TerryErasmusbonsai 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment. This is explained in the article and video. Whether you want to create one or not is entirely up to you of course. I should just add that the entire act of creating a bonsai as miniature tree is “false” as it isn’t a miniature tree, merely a host of techniques used to create the illusion of one. Why should those demonstrated in this video be of any lesser value?

I suggest not dismissing Tanuki out of hand,try it , no harm done....trees do grow like this in nature.

I don’t want to argue if you should or shouldn’t. Just I am not ready to do a raft, but will when I do a forest. However, I have seen trees like this in nature. After fierce fires, followed by rain, you get the new trees or growth coming out of seemingly dead tree. To me it’s new life. It’s stunning. In bonsai it’s art.
