I laughed out loud at "I have to teach myself patience because I tend to work too fast." I appreciate Peter's humility - his "work" spans decades, though I also get that in the moment he may still move too quickly. But for an experienced bonsai master to lament their impatience is, for the rest of us, the best reminder.

dont worry about it, i think thats probably normal for every beginner to kill the first couple or dozen trees. happened to me, as well for like 2 years i couldn't get anything surviving and gave up, too for some time. but i always had that feeling in my head of "how hard can it really be?" so i'm in my 6th or 7th year now and my skills improved massively. just hang in there, it all comes with experience :) probably took me 3 or 4 to feel confident about it and expand from there. i now own like 30 trees and they're all doing fine :)

I work in city greenery - I come across so many free grown yew (spread by birds) saplings in the undergrowth of the parks. We usually spare them with the idea "when the big tree/bushes die off eventually we have something nice already here and don't need to replant the empty spot.". Some we cut off. I've seen many of the quality you used here. I surely will dig one out and make something similar. There is a bonsai tragedy about to happen. We have a hedge of ~20 about 60 years+ old beech trees (Carpinus betulus). They are wide enough apart to grow freely and they have enormous thick stems. Some even split with an arch and dead wood pieces. They will soon be removed 😢 they would make wonderful bonsai in your hands.
