Glad I watched this. I was told at the hardware store that Teflon or sealer wasn’t need and my pipes kept on leaking! I was starting to question if I would even thread a pipe together right lol😂

Oh, one thing you might add, what I found out today, is if you find yourself cranking down on the connection to get it to stop leaking (PVC on PVC), you're probably doing something wrong. I went from 3 winds to 5 winds, and so far it's holding. I also went from some super HD/Lowes tape to Monster tape.

My obvious problem is not using thick enough tape or more turns with thin tape. Driving me crazy watching 1 liter per hour leak until I can get tape tomorrow. But I save the water so it was not lost...only leaking. Thanks for the video. Easy to know how thick it must be.

Felling a little embarrassed - this is the first time I have ever gotten formal training on proper tightening and a good comparison of tape vs dope. Also, I never felt great about using a wrench with teeth and I own a strap wrench but never use it. I completed a replacement of 4 1" ID globe valves and I must confess a few things were really cranked up tight - but I have not filled the trenches and will revisit and dissemble and use the methods in this video.

Lasco, the giant mfg of PVC pipes and fittings, is emphatic about NOT using Teflon tape on threaded PVC fittings. Their rational is that the Teflon is lubricating and it makes it too easy to overtighten the fitting. Their recommendation is to use a non-hardening sealant, though their website doesn't make a recommendation for one. Many of the videos on KZbin about tape vs sealant are not from manufacturers of pipe and fittings but are from distributors, plumbers, DIYers, and home-improvement shows. McMaster lists 37 items on its page of non-hardening sealants.

So if you follow this procedure and find that you have a slow leak under pressure, do you try tightening further? If so, how far do you continue before you give up, take apart the joint and try again, possibly changing to the other type (tape/dope) of sealant?

Yes, you could try tightening it a bit more just don't crank it down too much. Maybe another 1/4 to 1/2 a turn. If you find that you need to take it apart, check to see if the tape got bunched up and pushed out of the threads.

You will likely find differing opinions, but one manufacturer of sealant states that using thread sealant over tape can help fill any voids that the tape may have left open. If you choose to use both, be sure to put the tape on first. Thanks for the question!

NEVER use thread tape on PVC fittings. It is not designed or allowed on PVC connections. You need to use a non-hardening thread sealant.

It IS allowed on PVC fittings. I've never met an inspector who had a problem with it. Many manufacturers insist that ONLY teflon tape be used. Having said that, I have always preferred Oatey Great White sealant.

I read on Lasco's site that says DO NOT use teflon tape on PVC threads.. Because of over tightening and possible cracking of threads.. DO use PTFE non-hardening pipe dope.. DO NOT use oil based pipe dope.

Perfect example of code vs can. You surely can use tape and it can last you a long time if you can do a good job. In some places you may not legally be allowed to use tape. This does not mean there are not better solutions than tape, just that you can make a good connection with tape even if it's illegal.
