How to make a turquoise goblet

How did the Venetians make turquoise glass in the late 1400s? Find out as Bill Gudenrath, glass specialist at the Corning Museum of Glass, uses traditional glass blowing methods to create a replica of the extremely rare turquoise goblet from the Waddesdon Bequest.
The Waddesdon Bequest is a collection of medieval and Renaissance treasures bequeathed to the British Museum by Baron Ferdinand Rothschild in 1898. It was redisplayed in a new gallery in June 2015: ow.ly/O3Nlu

This craftsman is already a skilled one. Now imagine how much practice is take to get this done perfectly. And then be fast enough to make profit. I think it is sad how rarely people acknowledge that artisan crafts are often tough jobs that take as much as achieving a university degree (although much less brain and more instinctive understanding of course).

And here you are not acknowledging them by saying ‘much less brain’, you don’t realise histories greatest geniuses were often artists, sculptors, painters and damn good ones. And you need to be a hardworking and smart to produce good work, not just instinct... try relying on instinct only to produce fine work, even after 50 years. Impossible.

This is a little sloppy, but to be fair, they're doing this so it can be filmed easily if they were doing production quality it would probably take twice as long and be closer work (getting in the way of the camera more).

Uh actually bill beneath is a world renowned teacher and historian at corning museum of glass who works solo with no assistants. Something quite a few current Venetian grasshoppers have expressed admiration for. Bill is a world recognized expert on the history of glassmaking techniques so maybe just say thanks for your work as opposed to clearly talking out your ass?

usually at home hand blown glass just sits on the table or shelf and you don't see the unsymmetrical aspects as you do when it is on the pipe or punty.. if it is spinning on your table or shelf -- its time to get a excersoist !!! Gudenrath is a great solo glass blower and he loves to make the old stuff like that goblet.

What elements go into the turquoise glass to make that color? The other colors? I have heard that gold makes pink cranberry glass and cobalt blue.

the glassmaker in this vid works at corning museum of glass. their library called the rakow research library has tens of thousands of documents spanning a thousand yeara of glass chemistry if you ever want to know more. ive used them heavily in my own colored glass formulations

TJ, my experience with leave-gold says, the gold seen here, is worth about 50 cents - so, why not? The melted turquoise was more expensive.

The fact that the white band around the cup is uneven makes me cringe. If you're going to put all the effort into making something like this, why would you have a section that looks that sloppy? The differing widths of the white glass really diminished the overall look of the goblet.
