Finally. FINALLY. You have made the video on a technique I employ and other craftsman are oblivious to. I'm very happy to see you teach this and how well and effortless you do it. Einstein said anybody can make a complicated explanation, but a real genius can take the complicated and explain it simply. I have every power tool one could dream of, but this method has far more value than the reasons stated by others here. Besides the crossover into areas where a piece is fixed and power tools wont reach, if you look at videos from many "master" craftsman, they all struggle to cut a long straight line with a hand saw. They have lame ideas on how to remedy that. But consider this (something "experts" don't know - I find incredible): when resawing or cutting long tenons, this simple method (scaled to size) is a lifesaver. I have known master craftsman for decades who deal with such fine woodworking joinery and struggle unnecessarily. The most premier woodworking magazine (Fine Wiodworking) has had articles for decades (I have every issue back to the early seventies) with advice on making straight cuts by hand and these extremely well paid, graduates of premier schools in the design and woodworking arts, still miss the boat about this simple fix. It's beneath them, maybe. But arrogance makes the experts stupid, in my book. There is value in every little "hack" if we only look and apply, whether it be as here or in novel ways the "greats" haven't considered.

I am a beginner and made my first one and it did not work well, so I looked at other videos to learn why. No one else I found had done such a in depth video on how to do this properly. What I especially like is how you define terms such as "kerf" and "jig". I like the way you show the close ups and then explain things. Especially saying "snug but not too tight", which is the mistake I previously made. My only comment would be that I am unsure if I am spelling the word "kerf" correctly or even if I understood the word properly. So, in the video if you could show the word onscreen, it would be a great help. I certainly do agree with the other comments. You are one of the very best.

Leah, you're fantastic. It's a pleasure to find how-to videos for those of us who don't have access to more advanced tools, and haven't considered that there's no limitation on HOW to accomplish the same results. You've taught me so many things with your videos, and provided the mental license to use my imagination in finding solutions like this!

Thank you! My little brother has been precariously balancing a door that's too big for it's frame at the entrance to his room for privacy because he's unable to make it fit. I don't have a circular saw but I have a hand saw. I'm only removing a couple centimeters from the bottom of the door so a pretty simple jig will do for guidance. I'm not sure I have a clamp and I don't think screwing on a jig is an option. I might have a clamp. My neighbour will have one if I need it. At least I feel confident now that I've seen how it's done.

Thanks for the tips... My husband bought me a small jig saw, I have never taken it out of the box. Didn't even know what a jig saw is... Now I know. I love to cut wood when I need it. Thanks again...
@uaaerospace9 жыл бұрын
+Skinnydoll diana A jig and a jig saw are two different things. A jig saw is a type of power saw. It can cut straight or curved lines in wood, metal, or other materials depending upon the blade used. A regular jig is simply a "device" that helps you do something. In this video, it helps you cut a straight line. Power tool users use lots of different types of jigs to help them with use their tools. While it's not hard to learn to cut a straight line with a hand saw, it is something that takes a properly tuned hand saw and some practice.

Hi Leah, thanks for the video. I was wondering what happens when you get to the end of the cut, does the outer piece being cut off need to be held up or something as you get further along, should I hold onto it at the end to keep it in place and keep it from going uneven?

Very good, thank you in advance! I'm in a debate of using a jig saw or hand saw with a jig. I think I'm guessing the handsaw because the blade is longer, I'm going to be cutting hardwood that's 1"x 3" x 4' I only need 1 1/4" by the length of it.
