HOW TO MAKE A WIRE JIG TOOL (for bending and wrapping wire jewellery)

Making a wire bending jig tool and wrapping a wire ring tutorial.
After finding some perforated steel at my local scrapyard I make a wire jig tool to bend and wrap silver wire jewellery.
I’ve always enjoyed making jigs and tools and this is one of my favourite.
This wire jig is very strong, versatile and adaptable for many wire wrapping designs.

Hi Tom, I do enjoy toolmaking, what came first the hammer or the anvil. This cut off saw is a cheap tool at its best, it’s had a lot of use and I think it was less than £20 not including the old Grinder that is attached … Cheers … Nick

I haven't checked out your latest videos yet, but I do hope that you've included some commentary to go along with it. Doesn't have to be voiced, but text would go a long way to letting the viewers know what exactly you're doing and why. I get that this isn't a tutorial for wire jewelry, but it would have been nice seeing as you included the making process. Perfect time to link to another video of yours, as well. thanks for your feedback Jimmy, I suppose peoples videos making technique evolve over time and I’ve tried a lot of different ways. Voice overs don’t work for me because it’s been said they sound miserable. Using a lot of over written descriptions can put people off who aren’t English reading views without using subtitles that can be translated. Being relatively new to all this, I think it’s important to listen to peoples opinion, so in future I will take on what you have said and try to be more explanatory and descriptive in my videos. all the best to you … Nick

Deceptively simple! Looks easy but that angled cut was very pro. Seamless join, just lovely. Thank you for a useful and well made demo!. You have lovely hands. fyi to viewers: Spray Loctite Rust Neutralizer (Lowes) on steel/ iron jig plate on both sides, to make it rust proof after polishing. Any tiny bit of rust remaining will chemically bond to the metal and be neutralized. 1-2 coats. Dries clear. Can be primed or painted or left as is for a natural patina. Its a very thin layer. I always use this on bare metal to prevent rust. I'm also thinking instead of the two metal plates under the first one, why not add a larger wood board that can be clamped or bolted to table? This will lighten weight and make it simpler to build. Metal is very nice, but wood will cut back on weight for portability. You would countersink the underside of the wood as well so nuts and bolts stay level with table.

If you run a tap through the hole instead of a drill bit you can then screw the bolt in to the steel then use a single nut as a locking nut that reduces the bulkiness of so many excessive nuts that will get in the way

thanks Barnezy, We all look at the same object in different ways … I tend to try and show how to make something with the simplest of tools. mostly because I have had a few comments saying there’s no way I could make that because I don’t have this tool or that tool ect. Most metal work projects I don’t use any nuts and bolts, just throw it together with a welder … however that wouldn’t appeal to some viewers who like to have a go at copying simple ideas they see on KZbin … all the best Nick

You only need an angle grinder with a metal cutting wheel and a wire cup brush crimped. One drill with metal drill bits. A hand saw for wood. Get the Bosch 5" Angle grinder. Harbor Freight has cheap wire cup brushes for $5.

Love the tutorial! Finding that piece of metal with holes in it was a lucky find! Just curious... do you know what it was once used for? I considered an attempt at making a jig using wooden dowels but sorta gave up because of needing to drill holes. Actually, I didn't give up... I just put it on the back-back-back burner of to-do's until I acquire more tools to work with. LOL! Thanks for sharing!

Hi Tammy, this product called perforated metal sheet. it’s used for panelling and architectural installations. It comes in a variety of thicknesses, hole sizes, hole spacings and patterns. The sheet I used has 4mm hole with 6mm spacings and is 1.5mm thick. Some suppliers on the Internet will provide a cut to size service. Or you could try asking around local metalwork companies if they have any offcuts of this sheet material … Hope this helps … Nick

Hi David, no sealant lasts forever but some are better than others, A lot of people use a product called Renaissance Wax however a bit expensive for a small pot. Something that lasts a bit better is a type of lacquer for metal comes in a small bottle use with a paintbrush to apply it’s a bit like clear nail varnish. Can look a bit thick and heavy if you’re not careful also available in spray form. Otherwise beeswax is great I make my own polish that sort of works as a sealant. Hope this helps … Nick

Thanks for sharing. Flattening the curves enlarges the ring, but by how much approximately? And is there a way to stretch the curved rings a little (say 1/2 a size) while still keeping the shape? Or would you have to make a ring with different wire thickness and/or different peg diameters to do that? What size ring does 1mm wire with these pegs make? Enquirering (sp?) want to know. Hi Chana, sorry I can’t check the sizes of these rings I don’t have them anymore. Being a hobbyist I struggle with the mysterious art of ring sizing. I tend to just make a variety of small medium and large rings, throw them in my stock box then one day sell to somebody who’s tried them on. unfortunately changing the number of loops in this ring will give a dramatic jump in size. it will stretch well on a ring mandrill but eventually lose its curved outside edges. it can be reduced slightly by using a doming block. I made this tool from perforated steel that comes in a variety of hole sizes, spacings and patterns giving endless variation on the theme. The Pins i used are 4mm diameter the ends could be drilled to accommodate a different size pin such as 2 and 3mm giving smaller variations. tight fitting tube allows the pins to be enlarged. I tend to test and practice a lot with copper wire first before committing to silver … hope this makes some sort of sense … Nick

Gorgeous. I wish I had all this Gorgeous tools you have... I already have a lot manual tools. But not much electric tools. So I am jealous when I see someone that has so many tools. It makes everything so easy... can't you make a jig for me? Don't need all these things to screw it on a bench. The highest gauge I use is 18. (1mm). But most of my jewelry and wirewrapping are wit 20 gauge or 22 gauge. So it doesn't need to be so heavy duty... I am looking everywhere to find something that is decent... can't find it. Or they are in plastic or they are extremely expensive... lol

hi cleo, i used what is called silver solder, it comes in different grades that are different in shape and size but usually look like strips of metal. The strip I used was thin and narrow so when it’s cut up into small pieces it produces these tiny little squares perfect for uniform soldered joints. hi Sue, i’ve tried a few different variations of this ring and this one seems to work best when I put the soldered joint on the outside curve. I suppose everyone would have a different approach to this, a bit of trial and error helps find a technique that works for you … all the best … Nick

I'm just thinking outside the mesh here, but wouldn't a smaller gauge version of this make a nifty wire guide across the whole width of the rollers on your mill? PS Make one for me if it works out!

hi Debbie, great idea thanks for that. perforated steel sheet comes in a huge variety of different hole sizes and dimensions. i’ve slowly collected a selection of sizes over the years to make tools with and the smallest whole size I now have is 4mm. i’m sure it will go down to a lot finer hole but I’ve not come across any yet … cheers … Nick.

Hi Joseph, thanks for your comment, thats a good idea to turn the tops down it would give me the choice of endless size variations. Since making this video I have drilled out some of the 4mm pegs, One end with 3mm hole and the other end with 2mm hole allowing for a 2 smaller size variations. i’ve also turned some thick washers that drop over the 4mm pegs to allow for larger sizes. endless fun trying variations on a theme….. all the best… Nick

hi Redimage, yes I have two lathes one for metal and one for wood. The wood turner’s late is most versatile, having a swivelling stock head it can be used for all sorts of sanding and polishing jobs … cheers Nick

@@Nickscreativestuff hey Nick, as a hobbyist myself in some different fields i have experienced that people tend to undervalue all the hard work and creativity that goes into making those tidbits. the material costs for say a ring like this may be about 20 quids, but you have to have the idea of doing it in the first place. and i bet this was not your first try on this kind of ring. also you do this on your free time when you're not on your job. people tend to not take this into account. so i appreciate you doing what you do. and from one hobbyist to another: may you get hit by a creativium particle at least once a week. ...all the best
