For making cleaner mortises or for any cuts using chisels, use an exacto knife or utility blade knife to score the outline instead of a pencil. They make specific knives called a marking knife for just this purpose. Much more accurate and severs the fibers resulting in a much cleaner edge.

Fantastic work! Love the look of this piece and might need to make one for a Christmas gift. You asked about chisel work. What nice project and so well presented. You asked for a tip with fitting the hinges and my tip is don't use butt hinges. Look for concealed box hinges. Some accurate marking out then drill four holes and you're done. PS. Please buy a drill press. Even a cheap one is life changing! - Maybe that's a big call but you will never regret it.
@Mauro4life5 жыл бұрын
For small hinges like that I’ve learned that it’s easier to use a small flat head as the chisel. I’d give that a try next time.
@BlackDogWoodwork6 жыл бұрын
May I suggest watching some Paul Sellers KZbin videos on how to cut clean lines with a chisel. He's is a Master at the whole hand tool thing. I found using some of his techniques helped a great deal. Awsome project, I'm thinking of making one of these as well for chocolate coverd coffee beans. Cause not only do I have a sweet tooth, I also have a caffeine habit. 😜
@thejohnhend6 жыл бұрын
Use a marking knife to score the lines for your hinge mortises. Then chop out the waste material with your chisel but keep it a little bit back from the score lines. When you have the material removed, the last step is to pare to the line using the chisel. That way the bevel on your chisel won’t push the flat end back past the score line which is why you usually end up with an oversized mortise if you don’t remove the waste first. Great work and keep checking craigslist for some great deals on a table saw and drill press. Always better to get a well made older heavy cast iron machine for a song rather than a brand new shiny made in china tool.
@markbrownsell74434 жыл бұрын
Sweet idea. Try setting up your router to the depth of the hing and just cleaning the corners out with the chisel. It will come out perfect

Fun build! Using a marking knife to trace around hinges like that will help give you nice clean edges. It makes a "knife wall" so you can't slip past the line. Other than that, keep em laser sharp and practice, practice!

Really cute project, and while I think the brass screws on the acrylic look pretty good, do you think it might have been a better option to have cut a dado in the sides and slid the acrylic down from the top? Also, in the base, how about an indentation to catch the candy.... which might give you some extra chiseling practice? :)
@ericjohnson47682 жыл бұрын
If you want to hand chisel it just takes time and practice to improve but you do want to take shallow passes a little at a time, better to be too small than too big or too deep, you can always take more away. Some folks will use a spot of super glue to hold the hinge in place and then trace around it with a marking knife to create a chisel ledge to start from.

Quick tip for chiseling out the hing material. Don't start right on the line, The pressure from the chisel pushes back on the wood causing the fibers to bunch up and you end up off your mark. just move ahead of the line about a 1/16.

Some suggestions for using a chisel: 1) Mark your lines with a marking knife or razor knife. 2) Don't start at your line, start inside the line to remove the bulk of the material. When cutting at your line you should only be removing a small amount of material. 3) Sharp chisels, sharp chisels, sharp chisels. 4) Like everything else, practice makes perfect.

Using a marking knife to score the border of the area you are notching out with the hinges would help, the biggest thing though would be that it looked like you were trying to remove too much wood all in one go. If you use the knife, deepen the cut a bit with the chisel, then pare away a layer of the wood, deepen the cut with the chisel again, and pare away some more, etc. Paul Sellers has a video where he installs similar hinges on a small box - kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZS0coeHgd93q9k Neat project, I may make something like this for my nieces & nephews.
