This is my version of a wooden beer mug that I will be using a a gift for someone this christmas.
I used a scrap piece of 1/2 maple that was roughly 9" by 41" to cut a 11 degree angle on 16 pieces of wood cut to approximatly 10" long.

I'm curious how food safe and water resistant the oil polyurethane is. Might be better to use several coats of epoxy.

beeswax did the job for me. It's food-safe and I can't taste the wax, so it's fine

how long does the coating last? will washing the cup take it off??

@Rabbit Snare shellac will limit what you can put in your mug. Any liquid with an alcohol content will melt the shellac and ruin the drink and the waterproofing of the mug. A better option would be some beeswax or any hard wax, which is resistant to any drink below its melting temperature ( ~145 degrees F or ~63 degrees C)

Ha! that took awhile. I was not being agressive or anyhing else but just a concerned woodworker. Over the years, I have looked into workshops and walked away quickly if I have seen unsafe practices. I dont want to see blood! and I, for whatever reasons, will scan another worker, regardless of the profession, for missing didgits. I have all of mine. I actually spent more time focused on your project than your workdhop safety protocols. I do not normally stay with a video that is showing undafe practices. Keeping viewers should be a focuspoint.

Great job. I'm thinking about making a few of these for our annual guys weekend. And I'm with you. I'm starting to lean towards the "every finish is food safe if given enough time to cure" theory.

Nice video man. How wide were the pieces. You cut them at 11 degrease.

When you lay the sticks to the tape do they have to have that little angle on the sides to be flush or does the glue do that job for you?

Hey Casual Build! Cool video! I’ve been wanting to make one of these for a while, I understand how you calculate the angle for the individual pieces, but how wide do you know how to make the pieces?

How well has the handle stayed on? I'd like to do a stronger connection than just gluing, but I'm not sure if I need to.

+Leftern Acadian honestly I gave it away as a present so not sure how much it gets used but seems pretty strong to me. I would say you could add a couple dowels to make it stronger.

Depending on how well it's glued, and he glued it pretty well, the wood should fail before the glue does. But as he said, you could add dowels to make it stronger. Things that I made as a kid in the early 80's with Elmer's Wood glue is still holding today. People don't seem to use that glue any more though. Everyone uses Titebond 1, 2 or 3. I personally use Gorilla Wood glue with great success. It's all personal preference.

That polyurethane is not safe for food, so it looks nice but unsafe to use as an actual mug. They make stuff that's designed for wood and is food safe.

It is a plastic when hard, so as long as you don't put anything hot in it or dishwasher it, it is safe.

Great quick Mug build, however, I was always glancing at the router face plate moving about with the broken corner. It would not take much to buy a piece of plexiglass to replace the original and not detract from the safety aspect. That said, I was intrigued with your solution for fitting the handle. Simple and effective. Another viewer made comment about the strength of the joint and agree with drill through the handle and the mug wall and inserting a dowel and it could be done with a different color of wood for the visual effect. I am considering a different style of mug (marine) with a tapered wall and wider at the base. I have had some experience with tapered staves and it should not be difficult, and last, I want to make the mug with a thinner wall. Drinking from a wide lip will cause spillage, and we cannot have that. Thanks for the inspiration and get that baseplate fixed.

Most table saws can be angled. Just calculate the angle for each piece and put the saw to that angle

If you made the sticks longer, after glue up and cleaning it up, you could chop it in half for 2 mugs.
