In this video I show how I built a wooden frog rasp, sometimes called a guiro. This is a fun project, and the result is a functional handmade percussion instrument that is sturdy enough to hold up as a toy as well.

One thing to note is that the spines should become bigger closer to the head, not the other way around like you did. That way the deeper sound resonates better.

Neatly done frog. The store bought one sounds more like a bullfrog, but the others also sound like frogs.

I think if you did this like a bandsaw box it would be very easy to hollow the middle

Almost definitely, and I did consider that, but I wanted to try it as a solid piece.

How did you polish the brown frog sir, I am new to woodworking so don't know about what kind of polish is that. Can you suggest me which kind of polishes I can use.

Nice work! I think there is a version of these where you turn the handle and it makes a croak sound. But I am not 100% sure.

Thanks, and I'm sure there is, but I bet that would be a tricky mechanism to figure out. 🤔

Wonderful! I’m hoping I can downsize a good bit to make cricket sound!

That would be cool, I might have to experiment around with that idea as well.

is this what Ray Cooper used in the middle of Elton's "Funeral for a Friend"?

They have got to split the frog, carve out the inside, and then glue back together. I can't find any info on it.
@JoshsShop2 жыл бұрын
That might be the case, but I sure can't find a glue seam on the one I have.

Sadly I don't think I will be able to make it, I can't find the proper wood that is not a plank maybe I can find some soon on the street somewhere soon
@JoshsShop3 жыл бұрын
Bummer, I hope you can source some appropriate wood soon. Just about any hardwood should work, it just needs to be an inch thick or so. If it is thin, you can scale the design down and bit, it should still work out, or you could possibly glue a few planks together for a thicker piece.
@2ND-ID-REENACTOR19443 жыл бұрын
@@JoshsShop yeah I could probably do that actually, thank you
@JoshsShop3 жыл бұрын
If you are going the glue up route, you might try hollowing the layers before you glue it together, it would probably be easier then the way I went about it. :-)

@@JoshsShop yes! Thank you. I will definitely do that, because I have a few hard wood planks
