Couple things: Several have mentioned you can permalink directly to github files: www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/comments/i6mv0c/how_to_make_an_actually_good_tutorial/g0x7uhu This is a great idea idk why I didn't think to do this before. Bunch of people have said putting the length of the video in the title is redundant. I disagree; 99% of videos titled something like "How to Make A First Person Shooter in Unity" are just a 10 minute intro to a 300 part series. If you put "in 10 minutes" in the title it lets people know it's a one shot

"Here's WHY we're doing this" is a step a lot of tutorials miss. If you teach me the how without the why, then you've told me how to do one specific thing and that's it. Tell me why and I can use it for many things and that's far more valuable and also lets me change and fix the project to my liking, instead of relying on ANOTHER tutorial to specifically tell me how to do what I want.

I still want brackeys to tell me what the frick deltatime means
@thedude110
@thedude110 4 жыл бұрын
@@leviticusdb2482 lol. In case you're still looking for the answer, it's the time between the current and the last frame. What that actually means is that if you don't use deltatime in your movement script, then whatever you put as speed will be for example 5 meters PER FRAME. Multiplying by time.deltatime just converts the per frame speed (which makes 0 sense) to a 5 meters PER SECOND. Let me know if that helps, it was the only way I could understand why I was doing that instead of just repeating "the time passed between current and last frame"

The worst of these are when you're trying to watch a tutorial on how to *fix* something. Usually in that kind of situation I'm stressed out and impatient already. Clicking a tutorial in that state and hearing "Alright guys I'm back with another tutorial today, seems like you all liked the last one. If you didn't watch it feel free to go check it out. I apologize for being so quiet I've just been really busy lately..." probably takes years off my life.

IanHubert and his Blender "Lazy Tutorials" is one of my favourite formats ever. I know nothing about blender, but the format is so entertaining and short that I just watch every Lazy Tutorial video, although I ended watching CGMatter's the most because I loved the comedic style of the guy. He also has his Default Cube account for further details. That way the most experienced and those who just want content to watch get to see the funny, short and fast paced videos while the beginners have both the funny and the detailed versions available for the most complex ones. *THIS* This sooooo much. I’m so sorry this is going to be a long rant, but.... I am currently watching art tutorials from Brent Eviston (because I was pestered to do so), and I *really* can’t stand how much he takes too long to explain how to draw simple lines and shapes, just because he has to give me an art history lesson about how other artists I really don’t care about also use shapes and lines. Cool story, but I just wanna learn how to draw these damned lines and shapes (even though I already know how to do most of them before, but was pestered into it anyways), not attend an art history class; be more concise please! What I also can’t stand about his and some other tutorial videos is that he often likes to drag on for several minutes on what we just did previously for the past videos I just watched and how he says “In this tutorial video, we’re going to learn ____.” Why yes, thank you Captain Obvious. It’s not like I could just read the title of the video or anything. -_- *TL;DR*: Be concise (especially with tutorial or instructional videos), otherwise videos are more frustrating and tiring to watch. If it’s gonna be a long video, make it engaging (I.e. hands on activities, highlighting relevant info that’s vital to where they can take notes, etc).

DjeieA KeksekI Ahhhhh I see. Apologies on the long rant. I just feel as if time is of the essence irl. For me personally, if they take too long to get to the hands on aspect (which is pretty vital for art btw), then I will have the temptation to skim videos as if it were a book. And no worries, I am able to summarize what the videos taught me/were about; I just don’t really feel “Ah ha!” about the info if they either take too long to get to the hands on aspect or they don’t have any at all in general.

One thing I've been doing in the last couple of months is, whenever I see a tutorial for anything, I leave a comment with the timestamp of where the actual teaching begins (it's usually around 3-5 minutes into the video), along with the comment "here it is, don't waste your time". I'm glad someone finally made a video about this topic, I hate when the first thing some people do is asking you to like and sub, and I am like "dude calm down, I haven't even watched your video, let me see if you don't suck first" haha.

I made my channel specifically to not waste peoples time and you can see that in my quick-to-action videos. Saying that, I've made videos where I simply post code, but was received negatively compared to actually typing it out. A newbie watching an advanced programmer actually code is very valuable and gives them a glimpse into the thought pattern as you go through it. For the people who would prefer just the code, they can just hit up the repo or put the video on 2x (or skip). But completely cutting the option out is bad design imo. Whenever I look up how to do something and am met with a shit tutorial explaining how to do it (and I'm not on client time) I always remake it into a one minute version. This is an easy way to get KZbin views, because people who are googling for answers will always click the shortest video. One thing I wish people would do is write out every step of what you're doing in the video's description. So that way if the person is confused, or doesn't like your time length, they can just read the description and get on with it. The problem is KZbin rewards content of a certain length, not the most satisfactory answer to your search query, or the most concisely conveyed information. A video website with google's search algorithm rather than youtube's would be mankind's greatest contribution to poetry.

This is great if your tutorial is about UI navigation, but I'm of the opinion that the best programming tutorial is a written one. I don't have time to scrub through your video to figure out where you start explaining the concepts, and I certainly don't want to have to continually pause, rewind, and fast forward if your pacing doesn't match mine. Just write an article that I can read and comprehend at my leisure. It's also great for the creator because they can easily update it if there's a mistake, someone asks for clarification, or a better approach is found.

"Here's *why* we're doing this". YES! Time and time again I see video editing and VFX tutorials add some effect or change some value/setting without explaining why they did it or at least what that setting/effect/value actually does. I also see people skipping steps. For example, one second that image has a background, and a second later, after a cut, it doesn't. Why doesn't it have a background anymore? How did you remove the background? Is removing the background even necessary? Who knows? TL;DR: If you're going to be teaching people how to do something, make sure to actually teach them how to do something.

Approved. Other things I hate: * Hearing someone take a drink, and then the fcking 'Aaahhh' that follows. * Godot project tutorial? First you need to download Godot. Then you need to install it. --- Well, no shit. Better sign up for Internet while I'm at it. * Needlessly fumbling around with the document/scene while mouth is moving (ex: Blender tuts where scene randomly pans and tumbles on every syllable with no clear reason). * 'Tutorials' with zero commentary. * It's not a vblog FFS!!! * Lack of planning, preparation, forethought. * Watching Notepad open, type some, backspace some, type something different, doesn't mute mic. SPEAK INTO THE DAMNED MIC!!!@

Don’t forget “Today/in this video, we will learn how to/about _____.” I can’t stand my time being wasted, I just wanna learn how to do what the video was titled, and not be reminded what the video is about as if I’m a child.

no hate on everyone but tutorials with no commentary is almost what this channel's tutorials are. a lot of people like them but we should really accept that he barely explains the things he does

Download is a valid step because it often shows the exact version used. It also helps show how out of date a tutorial may be regardless of time uploaded.
@TimmBrooks
@TimmBrooks 4 жыл бұрын
@@DuckieMcduck Takes 5 seconds to mention the version used as a quick call-out in the video or description. If the title suggests I'm going to find how to work with Excel formulas, downloading Excel, buying a computer, etc. should be a common-sense prerequisite.

"Put it on a public website where it's easy for everyone to access forever" THIS!! GOSH esp when it's a REALLY GOOD tutorial but really old and non of the links work anymore, its frustrating on levels inconceivable.

The most useful (and my favorite) youtube tutorial I've ever found was like 3 seconds long and said exactly what to do.

I love you. I have many pet peeves with KZbin tutorials myself, but the biggest one is intros. I read your title, I saw your thumbnail, and you've sold me to click on your video. Why now do I have to sit through 30 seconds to a minute of you explaining what I know is about to be presented? It's like if you went to the movies but instead of showing trailers for other movies they just showed trailers for the movie you're about to watch.
