Another really great option for software on ESP 8266 chips is the Sonoff-Tasmota firmware (search for it on GitHub). It offers some similar features, and support for the MQTT protocol (among other things) to integrate it with other systems, like HomeAssistant. It also allows easy setup of connected sensors and things like that. It can be used with any ESP 8266 chip of your own, though it's largely intended to go with the Sonoff hardware, which offers great low-cost ESP 8266 devices with built-in relays and nice enclosures too.
