Spot on too many of these stoves being built with rounded tops the great joy of a stove is cooking on it.

One little tip for anyone using this style of flat plate door/hatch hinges on a similar project. When fitting them to the door and body, rather than bolting then up individually to weld them on, put all 4 pieces on a length of "All thread" bar, and clamp them at the required spacing using 4 nuts. Doing it this way makes it's almost impossible to weld the hinges on out of alignment, and once done you can swap the all thread for bolts to get a neater look.

Love the ingenuity, I built a mini tent wood stove myself out of shop scraps, the music however I could have done without. I prefer the natural sound of work and fire!

Great looking stove but it won't last long before the steel used to make the gas bottle burns out. That's why ALL good wood stoves are made of cast iron.
@evansautomotive3074 жыл бұрын
Mild steel is perfectly fine for building wood stoves, its the thickness you have to worry about. Its not going to melt unless it is like 20 gauge. Warping is really the only issue when working with steel and heat. That is easily fixed with thicker material. Cast iron is known for cracking, no matter the thickness. It is also much heavier, takes longer to transfer heat and is not as easily made as a steel stove.
@OKBushcraft4 жыл бұрын
ALL good stoves are brick and mortar made like the ones that vent the exhaust through many baffles to use up every calorie of heat before it escapes into the atmosphere. Cast iron is longer life but there were many sheet metal pot bellied stoves in the day. I'm thinking this isn't meant for a house but maybe a deer cabin, tent, or the like. Its size indicates it's use. It's a great use of a recycled item.
@powerwagon37314 жыл бұрын
I've got one in a 200 square foot shop in the Colorado mountains where you need heat 8 months of the year. I have used it for about 6 years with no problem at all and it works great.
@MrMEmEmEmEMEMEeeeeee4 жыл бұрын
I've been using the same small [24x16x18] woodstove for 6 months out of the year for the past 30+ years here in Montana-and it is constructed of STEEL, not cast iron...mind you, it is firebrick-lined, but the top [3/16" steel] is exposed to the 600F+ gas just prior to exiting the stove and there is ZERO erosion there on the inside. The stove requires a new fiberglass gasket about every 3 years and I have replaced the glass in the door once when I slammed the door on a chunk of wood that was very slightly too large...]-; I flip the upper firebricks every time I clean the chimney to even out the erosion, think I've replaced them three times now. Side and bottom bricks only replaced once. I stay warm in my 1,000S.F. home even when it is -20F outside and the stainless steel double-walled chimney pipe inner layer is glowing dull red just above the stovetop... Never a creosote problem when it is below zero, but I have to clean the chimney about monthly when it is 20-50 degrees outside and am shutting the stove down pretty tightly @ night. {Burn a mix of fir, larch spruce and pine}. Stove will hold coals for 16-20 hrs when shut tightly.
