I think one of the ugliest, most masochistic events in NHL history had to be the Canucks bringing in Mark Messier, then Mike Keenan. These were the guys that beat the Canucks in a heartbreaking game 7 loss. Then Mark Messier takes the captaincy away from Trevor Linden, a Canuck legend and all around amazing guy. Then Messier refuses to change his number and takes the unofficially retired number 11. I swear, it was like if someone wanted to rub molten salt in the wound of a Canucks fan, I don't think you could have done a better job. What a horrible, ugly, stupid set of circumstances... Bordering on cruel and unusual. And Messier never won sh$t with the Canucks, pure money grab of a player way past his prime. Insanity.

Yeah I remember this. From a Sharks perspective it was clear he meant it as in it was unacceptable to their team. They Rags weren't a great team at the time, Sharks were going through a bit of a rough patch at that point of the year iirc, and it was more of a message to the SHarks that they can't be losing those games than a dig at the Rnagers. Remember this is the Jumbo who got into a public beef with GM Doug Wilson and then they patched it up like a day later. He's a candid and passionate guy and sometimes had some one liners that most people would think "I probably shouldn't have said that", but he really didn't give a shit lol he moved past it the second after he said it

The cup is a team award and if you don't have the depth, goaltending, or luck (injuries/bounces) to win it doesn't mean you shouldn't be in the hall. Individually, he's one of the top playmakers of all time, number 7 in assists, number 14 in points, Hart, Art Ross, 3 additional top five finishes for Hart, 2 more top 10, a top 5 Selke finish, won a Spengler Cup, Swiss Ice Hockey Championship, World Junior Championship, World Cup of Hockey twice, and Olympics.
