Cute and functional, too! Fun Project #4. You might want this project as a pin cushion - but your 3 year old will like it as a toy!! They are so easy to make, you could make an entire flock of these little cuties! The FREE pattern is downloadable at:

Your video is 7 yrs old??? Wow, I just bought a pattern at a local quilt shop. I was told that I was the first person to have a problem and question the pattern. I have asked several people who just could not get the directions. Your tutorial is so simple! I am so appreciative of your taking the time out of your busy day. I LOVE owls! They might be my spirit guide, as I have been told I look like one! Not to mention my wisdom, lol! But seriously, thank you for the instructions. I realize now that the huge page of instructions which no one can understand was NOT worth the investment. I wish I had come here first!!!

you didnt show how you sewed the buttons on in the end.... how did you get the needle through
@TheMasquerade
@TheMasquerade 2 жыл бұрын
It's easy to start from the outside of the owl with a knot at the end of your thread - go into just the fabric of the owl and back out again about 1/4" away from where you went in. Then put your needle through the button from the bottom up and then back down again in the opposite hole - and slide the button down the thread until it's exactly where you want it to be on the owl. Now do another stitch in and out of the fabric - underneath the button. Go up through the same button hole, pulling the thread till it's tight. Now go down the opposite button hole again - but not into the fabric - make sure to pull the thread tight again. You can take another stitch in the fabric under the owl and repeat the process as many times as you want. I usually do just 2 or 3 rounds. When you are done sewing, take a stitch under the button between the group of threads - but don't pull it tight - leave a loop that you can put your needle through to make a knot. Then one last stitch into and out of the fabric under the button so that you can clip the thread close to the fabric. Your knot and all that stitching will be hidden under the button! ;) Hope this helps!

Hmmm, maybe bean bags for corn hole games? How about those long "draft dogs" - the kind you lay on the floor by your door to stop the draft from coming in. There is always "Hacky sacks" - or juggling bags!

@TheMasquerade
@TheMasquerade 8 жыл бұрын
+Tera_Squared , yes, I guess you could use rice. Just be careful not to get it wet!! The rice will expand and could turn moldy. You can also use pillow stuffing (fiber fill) to fill it with a couple pebbles on the bottom to give it weight. ;) Have fun!

They are using crushed walnut shells to fill pin cushions now. One gal said she got hers at a gun show. They use it some way with guns.

You can also get the crushed walnut shells at pet stores - pretty cheap about $7. They use it for bedding for reptiles.

I think they use it in a rock tumbler as a gentler way to clean shells for reloading or something.. It is a gentler medium than grit to polish things,, could be used to polish other things too

Can you hot glue the base to the owl?
@TheMasquerade
@TheMasquerade 6 ай бұрын
Yes, I believe you can. I'm thinking hot glue would be best - but make sure you have cinched up the bottom of the body and tied a good knot first.😉

Waooo....can I fill cotton in it instead of walnut skill🤔
@TheMasquerade
@TheMasquerade 6 жыл бұрын
Sure - maybe as a cute little toy. It won't be very heavy with just cotton - so it would be hard to use as a pin cushion (and it won't keep the pins sharp).

How do you sew the buttons on without having access to the inside of the owl?
@TheMasquerade
@TheMasquerade 7 жыл бұрын
Good question! I make a knot at the end of my double thread and start from the outside of the owl, just under where I want the button to go. I take a stitch into and out of the owl all at the same time. Then I stitch up through the button from back to front - and the down from the front of the button to the back through the other hole. Then I take another stitch into and out of the owl right where I took the first stitch. I don't pull it extremely tight. That way I can get my needle up and down through the holes again a few more times. When I'm ready to knot the end, I loop the thread around the stitches in back of the button a few times and take one more small stitch - leaving a loop that I can put my needle through and cinch it up. ;) If you have any more questions, visit my fb page and send me a message - I'll post a short video to show you how it's done!
@adamonline45
@adamonline45 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response! I just sewed the eyeballs to the beak flap, because they happened to look better there on my owl. I sort of follow what you're saying. Do you pull the thread to cinch it through the button? I couldn't do that, after only a couple loops I could no longer pull it tight. I thought you may mean that you cinch it by clinching the threads together behind the button, but I couldn't get my button very tight that way. I don't do Facebook, but the video you offer may help others, regardless :) Thanks for the tutorial, and this extra help!

I used buttons with four holes and crossed the stitches, just working into top layer of threads. When I was entirely finished with owl I put a dab of craft glue under each eye right at thread and now feel secure about their fastening.
