My 2 cents, on why the pine sounds better, it's the depth of the box. Look at normal drums. The deeper the drum the deeper the sound produced. Think timpani or bass drum vs a snare. I bet there is a website out there somewhere. I found one years ago that I still have bookmarked to reach every note imagineable with different materials for windchimes. Cool builds TC and ATB, Cris.

100% agree. It was definitely fun to play around with. I have some tweaks for the next box :)

@WhosTheVoss you sir...are a man of hidden talents! I didn't even know a tongue drum was a thing. Now I need to research them and make them! It reminds me of a xylophone. Thanks for the eye opening lesson! In the future...please use a pair of round vise grips to hold small round objects. You only have one body...take better care of it. You are not replaceable.

What would happen if you made some holes in n the sides of the fancy tongue drum to allow thst sound to leave inste5od reverberate? Btw, my the favororite band in the world uses lits of reverb and I love it.

Not sure, ill build a few more and tweak some things :)

@@WhosTheVoss you took the time to build, record and play the pretty one... Let's work on it and make you happy! I did a bit of googling and found that adding something soft inside the body will help, anything from strips of cloth up to a wadded up T-shirt and also putting small screws into the closed end/ uncut end of the tongue. My wife is an Educator, I'm thinking of making one for a Special Needs class at her school.

Awesome job. Ty for this. Something to make to entertain my kiddos. Appreciate your hard efforts in these simple but effective tutorials. I'm just wondering why not use a dado along the edge t glue. Is it because it will be weaker?
@WhosTheVossАй бұрын
For the pine box, i kept it simple, but I wish I would have dado'ed the top of the fancy box, it might have help the sound 🤷♀️ imma make a few more boxes and tweak the desig. :)

@WhosTheVoss yup, I wish I had a daddo.. I have learned so much from watching your tutorials and ideas. I'm a novice at woodworking, but videos like these give me the courage to try my best and see what I can do. You give us the blueprints, and all we have to do is try. I follow you and others. There's not many like you in your willingness to share your plans. Ty. I know this takes time and effort, so thank you

@@WhosTheVossas a scroller a lot of scrollers use packing tape it helps to keep the blade lubed a bit. Also a variable speed foot pedal, good light, and adjustable stool help immensely. I've had the dewalt 20 inch for going on a decade on the dedicated stand. I set the foot pedal on the bottom of the stand and can scroll for hours.

I wonder if the hard wood versus soft wood is an issue.. maybe the hard wood needs to be thinner?
@WhosTheVossАй бұрын
I got it down to a 1/2", I think it was due to the box construction and the top not being mounted directly ontop of the sides. A lot of boxes appear to be built like that 🤷♀️ imma make a few more and tweak the design :)

I'm guessing the fancy one sounds not as good because you are going against the grain for half of the notes.

Do NOT drill round stuff by holding it in your hand. Especially not with a forstner bit. I've got about 5 unnecessary scars on my hands from learning that lesson too many times. Find some way to clamp it or put it in a vise.

I was holding a hole-saw cut out trying to make the inside hole larger and it got me prrtty good once 🩹
@CeeJayThe13thАй бұрын
@@WhosTheVoss yeah we've all done dumb stuff lol. I was drilling pipes to make tool holders and got myself good multiple times. However, if you're making videos that people are ostensibly meant to be following along and making stuff, it would be a good idea to at least mention that that is a very unsafe practice.
