How do you stop sinkholes forming in the balm as it sets.
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 6 жыл бұрын
Hi, you can't - that is to do with contraction as the oils set and is a natural phenomenon. What you need to do then is allow the balm to set, and top up the 'holes' with more liquid product as it sets. Depending on the size of your balm pot, you may need to do this a couple of times as the newly poured product will also suffer contraction as it sets. This is very normal, just be prepared for it to happen! Happy formulating.
@nighttrain1236
@nighttrain1236 6 жыл бұрын
Hi thx. I've had better results today by pouring the balm at a lower temperature. This has eliminated the sinkholes so far.

You need to be careful - a lot of plastics can’t handle this heat. Check with the supplier of the plastic container and/or trial a small amount first.

Great video! Something I don't understand...if you're using beeswax up to 20% to make a hard balm, why does it matter if you have more than 10% butter in the formula? How could (a 20% beeswax) balm consisting of 50% liquid oil be more solid than with 50% butter? Thanks!
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 3 жыл бұрын
If you use more than 10% butters, it will start to have an impact on your consistency/hardness regardless of the wax - meaning the product could be too hard in cold climates, or too soft in warm climates, depending on when and where it was first made.

Hi Abbey, Thank you for watching and for reaching out. It depends on what else you have in your formula - it should not be used alone as you need a flexibility factor to stop unwanted cracking or breaks. I can’t comment without reviewing the whole formula and we’d need to charge consulting time for this to support your formula specifically: personalcarescience.com.au/Advice/Advice-2046/ Happy Formulating!

What is the shelf life of the Balm
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 2 жыл бұрын
The most important factor with a balm is oxidation - so if you have used sufficient antioxidant for the plant oils used, you can easily get 2+ years out of your balm. This formula would easily make that, if you make changes or add extra essential oils or plant oils, please check for oxidation. You can learn all about stability testing (and even microbial testing and good manufacturing practice) with our Certificate in Cosmetic Quality and Stability: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/CertificateinCosmeticQualityandStability-1983/

Hi Belinda I want to make a balm suitable for face so non greasy feeling, is this suitable? Can I include rosehip oil?
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 5 жыл бұрын
You'd need to use a lot of light skin feel esters e.g. Cetiol CC or similar. Vegetable oils will always leave you with a residual greasy feeling. Please also watch our w/o balm ointment, that will give you a better spreadability for the face: kzbin.info/www/bejne/il6YnqWcr7J1gNE Its still very balm like and you'd still need very light skin feel esters otherwise it will feel greasy.

Maybe I'm just not smart, or haven't looked at enough questions and responses (and I've looked at so many 🥴), but how are people adding cool down ingredients at 40C and still pouring while molten? Just about every tutorial (by actual formulators- not just DIY-ers) have ingredients like tocopherol, extracts, EO.. Am I the only one who hasn't figured this out? By the time you can add these ingredients, it's no longer pourable... Can anyone give me some insight? I figured I would ask here since I use the create cosmetics app (which I love btw...) I was trying to create a Laneige dupe, and there are just so many extracts... and this is in a jar! I have no idea how people are getting their (smooth) balms in tubes! Yall reheating heat sensitive ingredients? TIA;)
