Have you tried to make a semi-solid balm - the type that doesn't go solid in cold weather and doesn't turn liquid in warm weather - but can't get it right? Well this video shows you how to make a semi-solid balm that is climate resistant and ultra-soft and ultra-nourishing. These are ointment balms and need special formulating techniques to remain the same consistency in varying climate conditions. @theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 5 жыл бұрын
Usually they contain around 25% water or less but there are some special emulsifiers that enable the creation of w/o emulsions with low oil inputs. Please also watch this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qqDLapWubNCdra8 this one has 80% water phase but is still w/o! Happy formulating!

This is intended as a barrier ointment for example on very dry or damaged skin or even baby’s bottoms. It would be too greasy for the face.

@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 5 жыл бұрын
It depends what you are using it for. If purely as a wax rice bran wax is good - but if using it for low HLB properties (like beeswax) you'd be better using a glyceryl stearate or sorbitan stearate. They help stabilise this type of product and also provide a softer spreadability.
@7lightrays
@7lightrays 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Belinda, can you use Sorbitan Laurate (and) Polyglyceryl-4 Laurate (and) Dilauryl Citrate in place of the Aracell? Also, this would be a nice facial balm for oil dry facial skin? I don't use water based moisturizers but I do mist my face with rose water before applying my balms. I break out when I use water based moisturizers, so prefer balms.

This is an ointment, it is too heavy for a face cream - you would be better with a w/o cream instead, try this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d4bEiaZjbJyljNk You could not use that emulsifier, it forms o/w emulsions. Potentially yes- it would need to be more viscous to suit hair applications but potentially yes, it would be like a balm/soft pomade.

Could I add the emulsifier even if I do not add any water based ingredient, just to increase stability (heat/cold)?
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 2 жыл бұрын
No - an emulsifier without something to hold inside will destabilise your product. Without water you are making a soft balm, so avoid water completely if that is the case. You will find our Create Cosmetic Formulas program handy to make soft balms properly: createcosmeticformulas.com/Cosmeticformulas/Makeskincareandhaircareformulas-900/

Hi Belinda , Can u explain what is meant by W/O and O/W ??
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 4 жыл бұрын
W/O = water in oil emulsion; water dispersed in a mostly continuous oil phase. O/W = oil in water emulsion; oil dispersed in mostly water continuous phase. They require very different emulsifiers, thickeners and formulation compositions. Please try out our Beginner formulation workshop series if you want to get started learning about this amazing industry - first video is free: personalcarescience.com.au/CosmeticScience/BeginnersCosmeticScienceWorkshops-469/

Balm vs ointment
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 3 жыл бұрын
A balm is a totally anhydrous (without water) product, usually harder than an ointment. An ointment is usually w/o with a low water or glycerin content and remains a semi-solid consistency and is more pliable than a straight balm.

We have a video on stabilising particles with different types of gums: kzbin.info/www/bejne/g5TIZ2apbrp6rc0 but this suits water based products. With balms, you need to use oil compatible rheology modifiers for stability and it depends on what other ingredients are in your formula and company philosophy as to which materials you can use and choose. We can provide individual advice if you purchase consulting time here: personalcarescience.com.au/Advice/Advice-2046/ but we do need specifics of your formula and philosophy to advise properly.

I love your videos, thank you :) I have been looking around the internet for a substitution for Arlacell 1689? Do you know, if there is another suitable W/O emulsifier? I come from Denmark.
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401
@theinstituteofpersonalcare6401 4 жыл бұрын
There are several out there - depends who you can get materials from. Arlacell 1689 is a Croda Material; it is a low HLB liquid blend of emulsifiers that is very effective for stabilising w/o emulsions without increasing viscosity. Please find a local supplier who can provide a similar material. You can also check this list: createcosmeticformulas.com/IngredientSuppliers/IngredientSuppliers-897/
