The flying Goose whirligig is a classic favorite. The wings should spin in opposite directions

Thanks! I like how you said there aren't any rules for whirlygigs! That means every scrap of wood is a blank canvas... Im also looking out for old broom sticks. Those are always hard wood of some sort. Hillbilly tip: I use a drill strapped to a board for my lathe and a dremel tool with various rotary cutters for my lathe tools. Its not perfect but close enough for 'giggin

I built that bird in my Virginia workshop and I don't have those with me right now. They were very old Cherry Tree Toys plans from 30 years ago. They have a website you could probably get them there.cherrytreetoys.com/goose-whirligig-plan/

I just finished my second Canada goose. It's the same one you show plans for. Apparently when I transferred the drawing to the wood I misaligned the central hub hole - the axis that the goose sits atop and rotates on. Consequently mine looks to be headed for a nose down landing with about 5 degrees of rudder thrown in. Is there some wiggle room in this? In other words, can I try to make another hole in the goose to resink my ball bearing and copper bushing? Second, how do you create your axis points and assure uniformity in the many whirlygigs you make? Thanks!

You can drill a new hole for the pivot pin, no problem. Just plug the old one with a dowel if you want to hide it. I have had to re-drill this for the same problem from time to time.

I use my drill press and a square to line up the pivot hole. The square is held to the drill table with a "C" clamp.

When one is trying to find the center mounting point for the Goose should one have the wings mounted to the body or just balance the goose body?
@gwheyduke
@gwheyduke 3 жыл бұрын
The short answer is wings off but - From Anders Lunde's book "Whirligigs Design and Construction: "find the balance point of the body by balancing it on a narrow object such as a pencil. Locate the pivot point 1/4" behind the balance point. This will be drilled for the pivot socket. At a distance 1/4" before the balance marke a vertical line up the side of the body. Locate the wing dowel." (This is all done wings off) The idea is to find the center of wind pressure on the whirligig. Lunde gives a general rule for any generic whirligig. In his example the pivot is located 1/2" behind the wing axle.

Sure you can use copper tubing. It's pretty soft metal but it will work OK

Hoping you can help. I did find and bought those plans for the goose whirligigs you built. I built two. I can get two of the four wings to balance at all four 90 degree positions Two however will only balance when horizontal and not vertical. I can see the difference in low wind. Only the ones balance at all 4 90 degrees spins in super low wind. It has to be windy for the others to spin and adding washers for counter balance is not helping to balance them vertically. Help.
@gwheyduke
@gwheyduke 2 жыл бұрын
Hmmm that is a tuff problem. Your "wings" have just 2 blades, then the horizontal balance should be adequate. The only other possibility would be if the center hole in the hub is slighty off center. Other than making new hubs (a real pain) all I can think of is to add a little weight to the heavy blade. I have drilled 1/16" holes in the very tip of the heavy blade and glued in several lengths of solder.for those 'problem" blades. Good luck!

@@gwheyduke Really appreciate the response. I made 5 character type whirligigs before making the winged ones. They work but not as efficiently as the ones on KZbin so I purchased plans hubs and brass hardware for the learning experience. Ive tried taping washers all over the wings to no avail but your theory of the off centered hole make sense. Thanks again for your response.
